FRAGMENTS FROM REVIEWS:
Aleksandra Ziolkowska: DREAMS AND REALTY
(Toronto 1984)
In the monthly magazine published in Paris Kultura(9.
504 1989), a review of the book Dreams and Reality was published.
Benedykt Heydenkorn stressed that the author of the book, Aleksandra Ziolkowska,
a young Polish writer, depicted the Polish immigrants in Canada in an
interesting way, with a great talent, but also in a very objective way.
He remarked that she didnt want to prove anything, she only wanted
to share all kinds of stories of peoples lives, their views on Canada
and their views on the old country Poland. He stressed that she didnt
generalize anything.
In the quarterly Ossolineum Dzieje Najnowsze
( 3-4 1988), Prof. Marek Drozdowski wrote that the stories are written
with talent and understanding. He asserts that the reader can learn about
the painful episodes that immigrants faced in establishing themselves
and finding their own place in a new society in Canada. He liked the philosophy
of immigration shown in one story about Irma, and he also liked the way
Ziolkowska portrayed the Canadians Indians.
Professor Marcin Kula , the well recognized historian
at Warsaw University, wrote in the Krakow scientific magazine Przeglad
Polonijny (NR 2, 1988 ) that the book Dreams and Reality
teaches more about the problem of immigration than the scientific essays
about that subject. The book gives material for reflection about the myth
of a gold Eldorado that was so popular among the people leaving
Poland.
Aleksandra Ziólkowska-Boehm:
AMERYKANIE Z WYBORU I INNI
(Dom Ksiazki, Warszawa 1998)
"Twenty-to interviews with famous and not-so-famous
persons of Polish background (most of them living in America) by a prolific
writer wgo has been dubbed "a woman of success" by a reviewer
in the Paris "Kultura". The interviewers range from the generation
that fought in World War ll (Andrzej Pomian, Zofia Korbonska) to contemporary
middle-aged and young Poles who can be dubbed "persons of achievement".
Interesting fates and pleasant reading. The author's inveriable sympathetic
intrest in her subjects is a model to follow. As has been frequently noted
in reviews of her books, Ziolkowska-Boehm has a remarkable ability to
abstrain from hasty editorializing".
"The Sarmation Review", Houston, Texas, September 1998.
Aleksandra Ziólkowska-Boehm:
NA TROPACH WANKOWICZA
Warsaw, Prószynski i S-ka
1999 362 pages, Index)
A loosely-structured book on Melchior Wankowicz,
with many digressions concerning Polish social life in intelligentsia
circles before and after World War 2, by a close friend of Wankowicz who
herself is a prolific writer and is considered by some to be Wankowiczs
artistic heir. Particularly interesting are the sections dealing with
Wankowiczs relationship with Kultura and its editor.
The Sarmatian Review, Houston, Texas, September 1999.
