The Adventures of Callista the Kokiri

Adventure #1: Venturing Into the Unknown

By Blues Wolfox

A long time ago, in a land known as Hyrule, there lived a special race of people known as the kokiri. The kokiri, unlike other races in Hyrule, were kids their entire lives. They never grew beyond a certain age, which varied with each child. The kokiri lived only in the Kokiri Village, located inside the Kokiri Forest. They were not allowed to leave the forest; it was thought that they would die if they did so.

The kokiri were not alone in the forest. There were many fairies as well. Most of these fairies flew around the forest, seemingly aimlessly. A group of red fairies lived in a secret grotto in a part of the forest known as the Sacred Forest Meadow. These fairies had the ability to heal peoples’ wounds. Occasionally, one of these fairies could be found in a bush. Even more rare than the healing fairies were the guardian fairies. These fairies followed the kokiri around and acted as a guide and protector. There was one guardian fairy for every kokiri.

Also living in the forest was the Great Deku Tree. The Great Deku Tree was an ancient tree that protected the Kokiri Forest and its inhabitants. He made sure the kokiri remained safe, especially from the dangers of the outside world.

This story takes place long before the first Link defeated Ganondorf with the help of the sages. Hyrule has known nothing but peace. Every race in Hyrule is, for the most part, getting along with the others. The monsters are much more friendly than in Link’s day. Some will let people approach, others run away. Few attack unless provoked.

All that is about to change…

A kokiri girl with shoulder-length blonde hair and fierce blue eyes stood behind one of the many trees in the Kokiri Forest, watching a tall, mean-looking kokiri boy with short orange hair as he paced back and forth across the entrance to the path leading to the Deku Tree, a yellow/white fairy following close behind. The girl grinned mischievously as she watched the boy.

“Callista, what are you up to this time?” A gold fairy flew up to the kokiri girl.

“Michael! Where have you been all morning?!” the kokiri asked the fairy. “I thought guardian fairies were supposed to stay with their partners!”

“I was trying to wake up your other fairy,” the fairy replied. “He sleeps almost as heavily as you!”

Callista was no normal kokiri. She was much more likely to get into trouble than any of the other kokiri, so the Deku Tree thought it would be good to give her two fairies.

“Oh be quiet!” The blonde kokiri girl stuck her tongue out at the fairy and continued watching the kokiri boy.

“Man, you fly fast!” A bright red fairy flew up to Callista and Michael.

“Hey look! One of the healing faeries has strayed from his fountain!” The blonde kokiri girl looked up at the fairy.

“Hmph! Good morning to you too, oh pleasant one!” The fairy looked down at the Callista.

“It’s about time you got here, Kyro!” Michael yelled at the red fairy. “We’re supposed to be watching Callista, not taking naps!”

“Not my fault your snoring kept me up last night!” Kyro stuck his tongue out at Michael.

“Both of your guys’ snoring keeps me up!” Callista said to the fairies.

“Well the way you move around in your sleep, nothing within a twenty foot radius is safe!” The red fairy retorted.

“Oh hush!” The kokiri girl turned back to the kokiri boy.

“What are you up to, anyway?” Kyro asked, flying down to her shoulder. “Nothing good, I bet!”

“None of your business!” Callista snapped.

Michael sighed. “You two always fight… Why can’t you get along like the other kokiri and their fairies?”

“Because Kyro’s too bossy!” Callista answered.

“And Callista’s a moody crazy girl that never listens to a word I say!” Kyro added.

“That’s because all you say are insults!” The kokiri snapped at the red fairy.

“Well if you’d behave for once maybe I could stop being so harsh!” The red fairy glared at the kokiri girl.

“What do you know about being good?!” Callista growled. “All you do is yell and insult! If you don’t want to hang around me, then leave!” With that, she turned away from the fairies and slowly crept up to the kokiri boy she’d been watching.

Kyro sighed. “That girl is impossible…”

“She’s not the only one…” Michael said under his breath.

“What was that?” the red fairy turned to the gold one.

“Oh, nothing…” Michael rolled his eyes behind Kyro’s back, and then looked at Callista. “Hey… What’s that in her hand?”

“What are you talking about?” The red fairy looked, then laughed. “She’s picking the wrong kid to mess with…”

“Shouldn’t we try to stop her?” The gold fairy asked.

“Nah, I wanna watch this.” Kyro sat down on a nearby tree branch and watched as the kokiri girl grabbed the back of the boy’s tunic, tossed what was in her hand – a few small bugs – into the tunic, and ran off.

“AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! BUGS!!!!!!!!!! Getemoutgetemoutgetemout!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” The boy tried desperately to shake the insects out of his tunic.

Callista laughed to herself as she ran. ‘Stupid Sato! He deserved it…’ Suddenly, she ran into something hard and fell backwards. ‘Ow! What the…?’ The kokiri girl looked up. A tall black-haired boy with bright green eyes looked back down at her. The boy was holding a deku shield in front of him. His sword rested in his right hand at his side. A green fairy hovered by his shoulder.

The boy smiled at Callista. “Are you okay, Cal?”

“Huh?” The kokiri girl blinked, then looked down, realizing she’d been staring. “Oh, um… Hi, Cabreal…” She stood up. “Yeah, I’m fine. You?”

“I’m okay.” Cabreal chuckled. “What were you running so fast from?”

“Callista!!!” Sato stormed up to the two kokiri. “You were the one that put those bugs in my tunic, weren’t you?”

“What are you talking about?” Cabreal looked at the orange-haired kokiri boy. “She’s been with me the entire time.”

“I know she did it!” Sato yelled. ”No one else would even dare!”

Cabreal shrugged. “Maybe they just crawled in there, or fell off a tree branch or something. That’s happened to me before…”

“Hmph!” the orange-haired kokiri turned away. “If I EVER catch you, Callista, you’re dead meat!” He walked off.

“He WISHES!” Callista said after Sato was out of earshot.

“You really should stop picking on Sato.” Cabreal looked down at the blonde kokiri. “He IS our leader, you know…”

“He’s not a very good one,” Callista replied.

Cabreal shrugged. “He does a better job than the rest of us could.”

Callista shook her head. “I don’t think so.”

“Really? Who do you think would be better?” Cabreal asked.

“Well…” Callista looked down, blushing slightly. “You.”

Michael and Kyro laughed in unison.

Callista glared at the two fairies. “What’s so funny?!”

“Hey Kyro, our little Callie’s got a crush!” Michael said to the red fairy.

Callista’s face turned bright red. She turned away from the fairies and Cabreal. “Oh, go jump in a bonfire!”

Cabreal laughed. “Fairies. There’s no living with them, is there?”

“Hey!” Michael, Kyro, and Cabreal’s fairy shouted in unison.

Callista shook her head. “Especially when you have two to deal with.”

“Well excuuuuUUUUSE us!” Kyro turned away from the kokiri.

Cabreal looked at Callista. “Listen, I’ve got to get going. I promised Garow I’d spar with him today. I’ll see you later, all right?”

Callista nodded. “Sure.”

Cabreal smiled. “All right. Talk to you later!” With that, he ran off, his fairy following.

Kyro chuckled. “Callista and Cabreal, sittin’ in a tree…”

“Don’t start!” The blonde kokiri snapped at the red fairy. Callista turned to walk away, but stopped when she heard someone call her name.”

“Callista!” A girl with greenish-yellow hair and teal eyes ran up to Callista. “I was wondering where you ran off to!”

“Sometimes even Callista wonders where she runs off to.” Kyro smirked.

Callista ignored the fairy. “Hi Lia. Is something wrong?”

“No,” Lia replied. “I just saw you sneaking around your house this morning.” She glanced up at Callista’s fairies. “Trying to ditch the guardians again?”

Callista nodded. “Unfortunately, it never works.”

“Well excuse us for trying to keep you safe!” Kyro crossed his arms and stuck his tongue out at Callista.

Lia giggled. “What have you been up to today?”

“Trouble,” Kyro replied.

“She wasn’t asking YOU, fairy!” Callista stuck her tongue out at the red fairy. She turned back to Lia. “Not a whole lot. You?”

“Nothing really.” Lia chuckled. “I saw what you did to Sato a while ago.”

Callista shrugged. “He deserved it.”

“What did he do this time?” Lia asked.

“You mean besides being his usual arrogant jerk self?” Callista asked. “Nothing really.”

Lia looked at Callista. “He’s going to get you for all the times you’ve picked on him, you know. Your dear, sweet Cabreal won’t be able to rescue you all the time.”

Callista blushed, then looked away. “Does EVERYONE know about that?” Lia nodded. Callista sighed. “Don’t worry about me. I’ll leave the forest LONG before Sato catches me…”

Lia looked down. “You always talk about leaving the forest. Are you really so miserable here?”

Callista nodded. “Maybe it’s all well and good for you, but I don’t like the idea of being confined to such a small area for my entire life. There’s so much out there I haven’t seen… Besides, no one but you and maybe Cabreal wants me here anyway.”

“If we leave, we die. Aren’t you scared of that?” Lia asked.

“If we leave we MAY die. No one’s tested it. For all we know, the Deku Tree was lying to keep us all where he can guard us. I don’t need his protection. Besides, a even if it was true, a long life of misery is better than a short life of misery or possibly long life of adventure.” Callista replied.

“You’ve made your point,” Lia replied. She yawned. “It’s getting late. I’d better be going to bed. See you tomorrow, Callista.” With that, Lia headed back toward her house.

Callista looked up at the sky. Stars were already beginning to appear. “It is kinda late…” She looked up at her two fairies. “Well, are you two ready to head home?”

“YES!” Both fairies exclaimed at once.

Callista giggled. “Race ya!” She took off running toward her house.

“Hey, it’s not fair if you get a head start!” Kyro darted after the kokiri girl.

“Callista! What have I told you about running off without us?!” Michael sped of after Callista and Kyro.

Callista reached her house, climbed up the ladder, pushed the curtain hanging over her doorway to the side, and walked inside. Her fairies dashed in as the curtain moved to cover the door.

Callista collapsed on top of her bed. “Another day, same boring routine. Get up, find something to do until it gets dark, go to bed. How can anyone stand it?”

“Not everyone craves adventure like you do,” Michael replied.

“I don’t see why.” Callista sighed. “Peace is boring…”

“To strange people I guess it would be,” Kyro quipped.

“Better to be a strange person than not a person at all,” the kokiri girl retorted.

“I’m no less of a person than you are!” the red fairy snapped at Callista.

“All you are is a little red glowball with wings!” The kokiri stuck her tongue out at Kyro.

The red fairy looked down at Callista. “And you’re an annoying little brat with big feet! Your point?”

Michael sighed. “Give it a rest, you two!”

“Hmph!” Callista and Kyro turned their backs to each other, arms crossed and noses pointed upward.

The gold fairy shook his head slowly. “Sometimes I don’t know what to do about you guys…”

“I NEVER know what to do about her!” Kyro replied.

Callista stuck her tongue out at Kyro. “Be glad I don’t have a bottle!”

“You don’t even know how to use one!” Kyro snapped.

The kokiri girl grabbed a bowl off the table and brought it down on the red fairy, trapping him between it and the floor. She put her foot on the top of the bowl. “You’re staying there until you learn to behave!”

Michael blinked twice, then chuckled. “I’d say something, but I think you deserved that, Kyro!”

Callista sighed. “I hate this place, I really do. If it weren’t for Lia and Cabreal, I wouldn’t even bother staying in this stupid forest!”

The gold fairy gave the kokiri a concerned look. “Callista, you know that you’ll die the second you step out of the forest…”

“No, I don’t know that.” Callista looked up at Michael. “No one’s ever left before, so it’s never been proven. For all we know, the Deku Tree could just be making that up. Besides, even if it is true, it’s still better than staying in a place where you don’t belong…”

“You mean there is a place where you belong?” Kyro shouted from under the bowl.

Callista kicked the bowl. It and Kyro crashed into the wall.

“That wasn’t really necessary…” The gold fairy looked down at Callista.

Callista ignored Michael’s remark and lay down. “I’m going to sleep. You two do as you wish but if I wake up because you two are loud I am not going to be happy!”

“Why would we want to risk waking you up?” Kyro flew up to one of she shelves on the wall and sat down. “The only time you’re nice is when you’re sleeping!”

If Callista heard the red fairy’s comment, she didn’t respond to it. The kokiri girl yawned in closed her eyes. “Goodnight Michael, and others!”

“Hmph! Whatever.” Kyro turned away from Callista.

The next morning…

Callista slowly opened one eye. ‘Morning already? I don’t feel like I’ve slept at all…’ She looked around. Her fairies were asleep on the shelf on her wall. The kokiri girl smiled. This was a perfect opportunity to do something without those pests criticizing her! She got out of bed and walked outside.

‘Now…what do I wanna do today…?’ Callista wondered. ‘Hmmm… Maybe I’ll pay Cabreal a visit…’ She jumped to the ground and ran toward Cabreal’s house.

Callista didn’t get much more than halfway across the forest to Cabreal’s house then she heard voices. Curious, she hid behind a nearby bush and listened.

“Are you sure Callista won’t mind?” It was Cabreal’s voice.

“Maybe a little at first, but she’ll get over it.” This time Lia was speaking.

‘What are they talking about?’ The blonde kokiri girl peered around the tree at the other two kokiri.

“You sure about that?” The kokiri boy looked down at the green-haired girl.

Lia nodded. “She’ll be happy once she sees how happy we are.”

Cabreal looked down. “I guess…”

Lia kissed Cabreal on the cheek, much to Callista’s dismay. “Should we go tell her?”

“There’s no need…” The blonde kokiri girl walked slowly out from behind the bush.

“Callista!” Lia looked at the other girl. “How long have you been there?”

“Long enough,” Callista replied.

“Callista…” Lia gave her friend a sad look.

Callista shook her head. “Don’t worry, I’m not mad. I hope you two are happy together…” She started to walk away.

“Cal? Where are you going?” Cabreal asked.

The blonde girl glanced back at the two kokiri. “Away. You two probably wanna be alone…” She took off running.

“Callista!” Cabreal called after the kokiri girl, but she was too far away to hear.

“She’ll be okay, don’t worry.” Lia placed a hand on Cabreal’s shoulder.

Cabreal sighed. “I hope so…”

Callista stopped running once she reached the bridged leading to the forest’s exit. She walked across the bridge and stared out at Hyrule Field, sighing as she watched a flock of birds fly by.

“Callista!” Kyro and Michael flew toward the kokiri girl.

‘Oh great…’ Callista kept her gaze fixed on the forest’s exit. “What do you two want?”

“What are you doing out here?” Michael asked. “You know you’re not supposed to be this close to the forest’s exit.”

“I don’t care.” Callista sighed. “No one wants me around here anyway. Maybe I should step out.”

“You’re not serious!” The gold fairy looked down at the kokiri girl. “What about Cabreal and Lia? They want you here.”

Callista looked down. “Those two have each other. They don’t need me.”

‘Ouch…’ Michael remained silent for a moment. “That’s still no reason to risk killing yourself.”

Callista returned her gaze to Hyrule Field. “I’m not staying! I don’t belong here…”

Michael looked at Callista, then Kyro. He gave the red fairy an “aren’t you going to say something?!” look.

Kyro shrugged. “If she wants to go so bad I say we let her. She’s not going to be happy if we force her to stay.”

“She’ll die if she leaves!” Michael exclaimed.

“We don’t know that, do we?” The red fairy looked at the gold one. “For once, the kokiri is right about something. We’ve never seen anyone leave to know for sure.

“The Deku Tree himself said it,” Michael reasoned.

“The Deku Tree wants to keep the kokiri near him so he can protect them. That doesn’t mean they’ll just magically die upon exiting the forest,” Kyro replied.

Callista watched the two fairies argue for a moment, then turned back toward Hyrule field. She took a single step out of the forest.

‘Nothing’s happened so far…’ The kokiri girl stepped out with her other foot, then took a few more steps. Callista smiled. ‘Ha! I KNEW the old tree was lying!’

“I don’t care what your reason is, it’s still a bad idea!” Michael yelled at the red fairy. “We’re supposed to protect Callista. That means not let her get herself into trouble!”

“It’s a bit late for that,” Kyro replied.

“What do you mean?” The gold fairy gave the red one a confused look.

Kyro pointed toward Hyrule Field. “Take a look!”

Michael looked out at the field. Callista was standing about six feet from the forest, looking around. “Callista! What on Hyrule do you think you’re doing?!” He darted off after the kokiri girl.

The red fairy sighed. “Here goes…” He flew out of the forest after Michael and Callista.

“Callista, you know it’s dangerous out here!” The gold fairy yelled at the kokiri.

Callista shrugged. “So?”

“This area is forbidden to the kokiri,” Michael informed.

“Yeah, well maybe I don’t wanna be a kokiri anymore!” The kokiri girl walked further out into the field.

“Callista…” The gold fairy flew in front of Callista’s face. “I know you’re hurting, but that doesn’t excuse going against the Deku Tree’s wishes.”

The kokiri pushed the fairy away and continued walking. “I don’t belong in the forest, I belong out here. You two are free to go back but there’s no way I am!”

Michael glanced at Kyro, who shrugged and followed the kokiri girl. He sighed and followed. “Callista, you know we can’t leave you!”

“Sure you can,” Callista replied. She pointed toward the forest. “All you have to do is fly that way.”

“Always the smart-aleck…” Kyro chuckled.

The kokiri girl looked at the red fairy. “You’re one to talk!”

“Does anyone care that we’re in danger out here?” Michael asked his two companions.

“No!” Callista and Kyro shouted in unison at the gold fairy.

“If you’re scared you can go back, but I’m gonna see what all’s out here.” The kokiri ran straight ahead.

Michael sighed. “That girl…” He darted after Callista.

“Hey! Wait for me!” Kyro flew after the kokiri and the fairy.

Callista continued to run until she reached a large city. The kokiri girl looked around. Houses and stores stretched out as far as the eye could see. People, animals, and all kinds of carts and wagons crowded the streets. From somewhere within the city, a light and happy tune was being carried by various wind and percussion instruments. Several voices could be heard at once, each one mixing with all the others and making it nearly impossible to understand what any of them were saying. The sounds of footsteps, dogs barking, horses neighing, doors opening and closing, kids playing, and the hammering from a middle-aged man that was fixing a broken cart nearby all filled Callista’s ears. The smells of the various foods in the bakery found their way to the kokiri’s nose.

“Wow… This place is HUGE!” Callista looked around at the city in awe.

“You can say that again,” Michael said as he and Kyro caught up to the kokiri girl.

Callista smiled at the fairies. “Isn’t it awesome?”

“I’ll answer when I’ve seen enough of it to say for sure,” the red fairy replied.

“I’m gonna look around.” The kokiri girl walked into the city, pausing every now and then to look at items for sale or to listen to a conversation.

“Hey you, little girl!”

Callista turned toward the source of the voice. “Me?”

The source, a young man that sat on his knees in front of a nearby building nodded. “Yes! I have a favor to ask of you!”

“What’s that?” The kokiri approached the man.

“Sell me something!” the man looked at Callista wide-eyed.

“I’m afraid I don’t have anything to sell…” The kokiri girl looked down.

“Please! You MUST sell me something! I’ll pay any price you ask!” The man grabbed the girl by the front of her tunic, lifted her a couple feet off the ground, and shook her violently. “Please, sell me something! I’m begging you!”

“Leave her alone!” Michael darted toward the man’s face and rammed against him repeatedly.

“Ow! Hey! Stop! Ouch! That HURTS!” the man dropped Callista and held his aching face. The kokiri girl, upon being freed from the crazy man’s grasp, took off across the street.

NEIGH!!!!!

Callista looked to her left. A horse was running straight toward her. She closed her eyes and braced herself as the horse continued on its path at full-speed.

CRASH!!!!

“Hey, girl!”

The kokiri slowly opened her eyes. The horse stood a mere three inches away from her, facing the wall of a bakery on the side of the street Callista had been running towards.

“You!” a tall, muscular man glared at the girl from on top of his wrecked cart. “I just spent the last three days fixing this! Watch where you’re going next time or I won’t stop for ya!”

“Y-y-yes s-sir!” The kokiri girl hurried across the street, clearly shaken up from the near-collision.

“Callista!” Michael and Kyro caught up with the Kokiri. “You had us scared to DEATH back there!”

 “I’m sorry…” Callista looked down.

“Try to be more careful next time, okay?” The gold fairy hovered near the kokiri’s face. “If something should happen to you…”

“I know, I know…” Callista sighed. She turned her attention toward the window of the bakery and stared and at all the food displayed in the shop. Her stomach growled. “Oh man… This reminds me. I haven’t eaten since yesterday morning.”

“That’s another problem with being out here.” Kyro perched himself on the kokiri’s shoulder again. “You were provided for in the forest. Out here, you’re on your own.”

“You!” the baker shouted at the kokiri. “Either buy something or get out of my sight!”

Callista ran away from the bakery and sat down near a potion shop. “Friendly people here. Wouldn’t you say, guys?”

“Oh, yes.” Kyro rolled his eyes.

“Hey, brat!” A tall, thin old man with messy gray hair, a long gray beard, and green-brown eyes limped toward the kokiri. His clothes were mere rags and covered with dirt, as was most of his skin. It took all of Callista’s willpower to keep from gagging at the man’s foul smell.

The man glared at the kokiri girl. “That’s MY spot!”

Callista stood up and backed away from the man. “Sorry! I didn’t know that. Here, take it back!” She ran off again.

“The goddesses are angry!” a middle-aged man shouted from on top of a soapbox to the large crowd that was gathered around him. “We have failed to obey their commandments and thank them for all they’ve provided! We must beg their forgiveness and change our ways, or their wrath shall fall upon us!”

The kokiri girl stopped and watched the man as he spoke. “What’s he talking about?”

“Don’t pay that man any heed.” A short old woman, barely taller than Callista, walked up from behind the kokiri. “The poor fool doesn’t know what he’s talking about.” she smiled a near-toothless grin at the kokiri and her fairies. “I don’t believe I’ve seen you around here before.”

“We’re not from around here,” Callista replied.

The woman chuckled. “Of course not. You come from the forest to the east, correct?”

The kokiri girl blinked in surprise. “How do you know about the forest?”

“Everyone’s heard rumors of fairy children in green clothing living in the forest,” the old woman explained. “You seem to fit that description.”

“I guess…” Callista replied.

The old woman smiled again. “What is your name, child?”

“Callista.” The kokiri answered. “Yours?”

“Hadina.” The old woman introduced herself.

Callista nodded toward her fairies. “The gold fairy’s name is Michael and the red one’s Kyro. They’re helpful sometimes but Kyro can be a real pain.”

“Yeah well at least I don’t go looking for some way to get us killed every five minutes!” Kyro stuck his tongue out at the kokiri girl.

RRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“What was that?!” Callista asked.

“Vodarco has returned!” a middle-aged man shouted as he ran through the city.

“See? The goddesses’ wrath is upon us! Repent!” the soapbox man shouted.

Everyone in the city – save for Callista, Michael, Kyro, and Hadina – fled in panic.

“What’s going on?!” the kokiri girl asked. “Hadina, who is this Vodarco that everyone’s so scared of?”

“Vodarco is an evil monster that appeared in this town not to long ago.” The old woman explained. “This place has been nothing but chaos since he appeared.

“And no one’s tried to stop him?” Callista asked.

Hadina shook her head. “No one in this town is brave enough to face that demon.”

“SOMEONE’S gotta do SOMETHING…” The kokiri girl watched as Vodarco, a large dragon/gargoyle-like creature brought one of his paws down on a nearby building, flattening it completely. She looked back at the old woman. “Where’s the closest shop that sells weapons and armor?”

“You can’t possibly be thinking of FIGHTING that thing!” Michael exclaimed.

“I have to!” Callista replied. “If no one else will face him, lives may be lost!”

“I don’t think a child like you could wield the necessary equipment…” Hadina looked at the kokiri girl.

“There has to be SOME way I can help…” Callista sighed. “I’ll do anything!”

“You’re a brave girl.” The old woman smiled at the kokiri. “I think I may know of a way you can help…”

“Really?” Callista looked at the Hadina. “How?”

“Magic,” the old woman answered. “I can make your body age until you look like a young woman. Then you should have the strength you need.”

“I’ll do it!” the kokiri girl exclaimed without hesitation.

“Are you sure you want to do that?” The red fairy asked.

“Definitely,” Callista replied.

Hadina smiled at the kokiri girl. “Follow me.” She led Callista and her fairies to a small house not far from where they had been standing. The kokiri and her guardians followed the old woman into the back room of the house, where several vials, bottles, and bags were placed on tables and shelves.

Hadina browsed through the various potions and powders in the room. “Ah! Here we are!” She held up a bottle containing a thick white liquid. The old woman looked at Callista. “Are you sure you wish to do this? Once you age, I cannot reverse the process.”

The kokiri nodded. “I’m sure.”

“Very well then.” Hadina handed the bottle to Callista. “Drink this.”

The kokiri girl looked at the bottle and the potion inside it, then shrugged, raised the bottle to her lips, and drank.

Almost immediately after she finished, Callista was overcome with an intense pain, making her scream and causing her to lose consciousness. She fell to the floor, dropping the bottle. Her body started to glow a faint gold color as it grew and changed from child to young adult.

“You didn’t say that potion would hurt her!” Michael yelled at the old woman.

“Relax, small one.” Hadina smiled at the fairy. “Your friend will be just fine in a moment.”

As if on cue, Callista began to stir.

“Unnnnnhhhhhhhhnnhh… What hit me?” The kokiri opened her eyes and slowly rose to a standing position.

‘Wow…’ Kyro stared at Callista as she stood.

“Everything seems so much smaller…” The kokiri woman looked around the room.

“You sure don’t.” Kyro smirked.

Callista ignored the fairy. “Well, the potion seems to have worked. Now, what do I need exactly?”

Hadina handed the kokiri woman a sword and shield and nodded to a suit of armor leaning against the back wall.

The kokiri attached the shield to her left arm and swung the sword a few times. “Thanks. Don’t worry, I’ll bring down that Vodarco or whatever his name is.” She glanced at the armor. “I don’t think I’ll be needing that.”

The old woman looked at Callista worriedly. “Vodarco is a very powerful creature.”

The kokiri nodded. “That’s exactly why I can’t be weighed down by a piece of metal that protects me from blows I might be able to dodge if I don’t wear it.”

Hadina sighed. “Be careful, child.”

“Don’t worry.” Callista smiled at the old woman. “Come on, guys!” She ran out of the room, followed by the two fairies.

The old woman watched the kokiri and her guardians leave. “Goddesses help her. The poor girl has no idea just what she is up against…”

Callista ran through the city, following the roars and crashes to what she assumed was Vodarco. It wasn’t easy; she was running against a large crowd of hylians that were trying to escape the monster.

“Think we’re getting close?” Kyro asked as he and the kokiri woman made their way through the crowd of people.

Suddenly, a large stream of fire shot toward Callista and the fairies. The kokiri kneeled and held her shield up in front of herself, Michael, and Kyro, deflecting the flames.

“Yep.” Callista replied.

The three companions looked up at the source of the flames. A large dark gray-brown dragon glared down at the forest folk.

“Well, doesn’t he look friendly?” Kyro asked sarcastically.

Callista leapt out of the way of another stream of fire, followed by the fairies. “You fairies are usually knowledgeable of these things. What’s his weak point?”

“Beats me.” Kyro shrugged.

Michael shook his head. “I’ve never heard of this guy.”

“Wonderful. I guess I’m gonna hafta find out the hard w-ack!” The kokiri jumped to the side as Vodarco tried to pounce her; his long, sharp talons narrowly missed Callista’s legs.

“Grr…” The kokiri woman slashed at the dragon’s neck, barely scratching it. Her adversary roared in pain and slashed out at her with its talons. Callista jumped back onto a cart filled with various kinds of produce; then again onto a nearby rooftop when the dragon smashed the cart with its tail, destroying it.

Vodarco spread it’s wings and flew up to it’s opponent. It opened its mouth wide, preparing to breathe fire on the kokiri girl.

Callista thrust her sword as far into the dragon’s mouth as she could; the tip cut through the back of its head. The monster roared in half pain, half surprise, then fell to the ground, taking the kokiri with him. Callista landed on top of Vodarco. She pulled the sword out of the dragon’s head and winced as blood gushed out of the wound. Vodarco glared at the kokiri, gave one last, weak growl, and closed its eyes as its body began to vaporize.

A quiet murmur spread through the streets of the city. The kokiri woman looked up from Vodarco’s disappearing body to see the inhabitants of the city standing in a half-circle around her and her fairies.

‘How long have they been there?’ Callista wondered as the looked around at the crowd.

A tall, thin old man limped away from the crowd toward the kokiri. “I see you were able to destroy the demon…” he bowed his head toward her. “We are forever in your debt.”

The kokiri woman shrugged. “It was kind of fun, really…”

“If you need a place to stay, we’ll be more than happy to make a home for you here,” the old man offered.

Callista smiled at the man. “Thanks, but I’ve got a lot more exploring to do before I settle down for any amount of time.” She started to walk away.

“Where are you going?” The old man asked the kokiri.

“I have a friend I need to visit before I leave,” Callista answered. “Don’t worry, I’ll be back again sometime.” The kokiri woman made her way through the mass of people surrounding the area and headed for Hadina’s house.

“Callista, wait for us!” Michael shouted as he and Kyro darted after the kokiri.

Knock! Knock!

“Coming!” Hadina shouted as she made her way toward the door. She opened the door. “Callista! Welcome back!”

Callista handed the sword and shield back to the old woman. “Thanks for letting me borrow these.”

“Thank you for saving everyone from that beast.” Hadina smiled. “What are you going to do now?”

“Run blindly around Hyrule until we get ourselves hopelessly lost,” Kyro replied.

The kokiri stuck her tongue out at the fairy.

The old woman chuckled. “Good luck, and do try to come back sometime.”

Callista nodded. “Thanks, I will. Bye, Hadina.” With that, the kokiri woman walked away, her fairies following close behind.

“Where are we headed now?” Michael asked once the three were out of the city and back in Hyrule Field.

“Wherever we feel like,” Callista answered. She looked around. “I guess this direction is as good as any.” She ran straight ahead.

“That girl…” Kyro sighed.

The gold fairy shook his head. “Come on, we don’t want her to get too far ahead of us.”

The red fairy nodded. The two fairies then rushed after the kokiri woman.
