The Adventures of Callista the Kokiri

Adventure #3: The Death Mountain Adventure

Part 1 - She'll be Comin' 'Round the Mountain When She Comes...

By Blues Wolfox

The sun fell gradually behind the mountains as night befell the land of Hyrule. A few stalchildren rose from the ground in Hyrule Field and began to walk around the land, attacking anyone they saw in their path. Fortunately, there was no one around for the monsters to attack.

Well, ALMOST no one...

"HYAH!" A young-looking woman of medium height with blue eyes and shoulder-length blonde hair let out a loud kiai as her sword sliced cleanly through a stalchild's neck, decapitating it. She sliced downward at the body, cutting it in half, and picked up the blue rupee the monster dropped as it disappeared in a cloud of green vapor.

"I could easily get used to this kinda life." The woman pocketed the rupee.

"Callista, I think you're enjoying all this a little TOO much..." the red fairy that hovered over the woman's right shoulder said to her as she swung her sword at another skeleton monster.

"You and me both, Kyro..." the woman's other companion, a gold fairy, agreed with the red fairy as he flew around the stalchild, showing the kokiri where to attack.

"You know, Kyro, you CAN help Michael out." Callista glanced at the red fairy.

Kyro shook his head. "I have to stay by you in case you get injured."

"By these guys? Yeah, RIGHT!" The kokiri shouted as she defeated another stalchild.

Just then, a large stalchild pulled itself up out of the ground.

Callista looked up at the monster. "Oooohhhh...kaaaay..."

Michael darted toward the stalchild and flew around it. "Just attack him like normal. He's not much tougher than the ones you've been fighting."

"Right..." The kokiri woman struck the monster in the neck a couple times, decapitating it. Then she cut apart the body, which left behind a red rupee.

The kokiri picked the rupee up. "I've never seen one THIS color before..."

"That's because you're almost always poor." Kyro smirked.

"Oh shut up." Callista stuck her tongue out at the red fairy.

"Red rupees are worth twenty rupees," Michael informed the kokiri, "You want to hang on to that..."

Callista nodded, pocketed the rupee, and walked in the direction she was facing. "Hey, does that mean I can trade Kyro for something that's worth twenty rupees?"

"Don't even try it!" Kyro yelled at the kokiri.

"Right. That wouldn't be too fair a trade to the person I'd be giving you to anyways," Callista replied.

"That was so funny I forgot to laugh..." The red fairy replied.

The kokiri and fairies journeyed in silence for a while, pausing to battle the occasional stalchild. The group continued until they came to a bridge.

Callista looked across the bridge at Death Mountain and a cluster of buildings near its base. "Hey, it looks like there's a city or something over there..."

"No duh, genius!" Kyro snapped at the kokiri.

"Shut up, Kyro! No one asked you!" Callista snapped back.

"You two should try being nice to each other," Michael said to his two companions, "You might actually like it."

"I'll be nice to him when he's nice to me," The kokiri replied.

"You're the one that starts everything!" The red fairy shouted at the kokiri woman.

"Hmph!" Callista crossed her arms and turned her face away from Kyro.

"See? You know I'm right," the red fairy said to the kokiri.

"You WISH!" Callista snapped.

Kyro smirked. "You wish you knew I was right?"

"Shut up!" The kokiri walked across the bridge toward the city.

"Only if you will," the red fairy replied as he and Michael followed the kokiri.

The city was every bit as big as the first city Callista had visited, but not near as busy. All the city's residents were either asleep inside their houses or sitting quietly outside while looking at the stars. The city's buildings varied in size and color. A few of the buildings were lit up inside. The yellow light of the candles and silhouettes of the people inside could be seen through the buildings' windows. There were a few dirt paths, but most of the ground was covered by grass.

"Welcome to Kakariko..." Callista read a sign near the city's entrance. "Strange name."

"And 'Callista' is any better?" Kyro asked.

"Shut up." The kokiri walked into the city.

The two fairies followed Callista.

"You should probably be trying to find an inn," Michael advised the kokiri.

"It is kinda late, isn't it?" The kokiri looked up at the sky. The moon was already directly above the town.

Kyro landed on Callista's left shoulder. "You should have been able to figure that out when the sky got dark."

"Oh shut up!" The kokiri woman brushed the red fairy off her shoulder and continued to walk through the city.

The group walked until they came across a large brick building with a sign above the door.

Callista looked up at the sign and attempted to read the letters on it. "Hey Michael, think you could hover around that sign for a moment?"

The gold fairy did as he was told. The words "Kakariko Inn" could now be seen.

The kokiri read the sign. "Guess this is it. Thanks, Michael." She opened the door and walked inside, followed by the two fairies.

The door lead the three companions to a medium-sized room with a counter at the opposite end. A young woman with black hair and brown eyes sat behind a counter, reading a thick book by candlelight. The woman wore a dark red vest over a white long-sleeved dress/

The woman smiled at Callista as she entered. "Welcome to the Kakariko Inn! We don't get many visitors at this hour."

The kokiri smiled back as she walked up to the counter. "Have any rooms available?"

The woman nodded.

"Great. How much are they?" Callista asked.

"Twenty rupees a night," the woman answered.

The kokiri handed the woman the red rupee she acquired from her fight with the large stalchild.

The woman handed Callista a key and nodded toward the hall to her left. "Walk down that hallway and your room will be the second door on the right."

"Thanks." The kokiri woman took the key and walked to her room, followed by the fairies.

"This will be the first time you've seen a bed in awhile. Remember what one looks like?" Kyro asked Callista as she walked.

"Better than you do." The kokiri stuck her tongue out at the red fairy.

"Just making sure you won't confuse it with a toilet." Kyro smirked.

"Eeewww!! Kyro, you are SICK!" Callista shouted at the red fairy.

"That's not the worst that's ever popped out of his mouth," Michael replied.

"Or yours." Kyro stuck his tongue out at the gold fairy.

"If I ever decide to learn any magic, the first spell I'll study will be a mute one," the kokiri woman said to the two fairies.

"Assuming you have the intelligence to figure out how to cast it." Kyro smirked.

"Shut up." Callista reached the door to her room and opened it. She walked in, followed by Kyro and Michael.

The kokiri woman locked the door after she and her fairies entered the room and sat down on the bed. She laid her sword and shield on the floor beside the bed and took off her boots.

"Ugh... Now it stinks in here..." Kyro covered his nose.

"Shut up, fairy!" Callista threw one of her boots at the red fairy, who dived to avoid it.

"You two..." Michael sighed and landed on the bed next to the pillow.

"He started it." Callista lay on her back and closed her eyes.

"Sure, blame me." Kyro flew to the remaining bed and landed on the pillow.

"I just did," the kokiri woman replied with a yawn. She sighed then rolled onto her left side, eyes still closed.

"I noticed," the red fairy replied.

Callista did not respond.

"Callista?" Kyro looked toward the kokiri, who was not moving or making much sound. 'Great...she's asleep.' He yawned. 'I might as well get some rest too. There's nothing else to do around here...' The red fairy folded his wings and fell asleep.

The sun slowly made its way up into the eastern skies of Hyrule, bathing everything its rays could reach in its light. The sounds of the cuccos greeting the sun could be heard throughout Kakariko as the city's inhabitants set out to do their daily chores.

Callista, who had been awakened by the cuccos' calls, yawned and slowly sat up. She climbed out of bed, slipped into her boots, and strapped her sword and shield onto her back.

The kokiri looked over at the two beds, where her fairies were still sleeping. "Kyro, Michael, wake up! It's time to leave!"

"Morning already?" Michael slowly opened his eyes.

"It always comes during the best parts of dreams..." Kyro complained.

"Quit complaining and come on. We've got a lot of traveling to do." Callista walked out of the room.

"So what else is new...?" The red fairy said to himself as he and Michael followed the kokiri.

Callista walked down the hall to the front of the inn and handed her key to the woman behind the counter.

The woman smiled at the kokiri as she took the keys. "Sleep well?"

"Very, thanks," Callista answered.

The woman nodded. "Please come visit us again sometime."

Callista nodded back and started to head out the door.

"Oh! If you're planning on going to Death Mountain, I advise you to wait a bit. Its eruptions have been getting worse lately." The woman called after the kokiri.

"Don't worry," Callista said to the woman as she and her fairies left the inn.

"Does that mean you're changing your plans?" Michael asked the kokiri as the trio walked down the dirt path.

Callista shook her head. "No, that means I'll just have to be a bit more careful."

The kokiri walked down the path toward Death Mountain until she came to a gate. A guard stood next to the gate, staring silently toward the town.

Callista approached the gate and looked at the guard. "Hey you, why is this closed off?"

"The mountain trail has gotten dangerous," the guard answered, "I cannot allow anyone to enter."

"I can handle whatever's up there, so let me through!" The kokiri ordered.

The guard shook his head. "I'm sorry, young lady, but you can't pass."

"But...but I HAVE to go up there..." Callista turned her gaze toward the ground. She suddenly started sobbing.

The guard gave the kokiri a confused look. "Miss? Are you all right?"

Callista continued to sob. "Sir, you don't understand! My...my brother went up the mountain a while ago and he never came back down! I'm worried he may have died. You HAVE to let me go see if I can save him!"

The guard thought for a moment, unsure of what to do.

The kokiri looked up into the guard's eyes. "Please, sir... Don't you have a family? You must understand how hard it is, not knowing if they're okay, or if they can be saved if they get into trouble..."

The guard sighed and looked around, checking to see if anyone was looking his way. No one other than Callista and her fairies were paying him any heed. "Well... I suppose I can make an exception in this case, but hurry back once you find your brother."

The kokiri nodded and smiled. "I will. Thank you, sir."

The guard opened the gate long enough for Callista to run through, and then shut it once she was on the other side.

The kokiri ran up the path leading to the top of Death Mountain. She laughed once she was out of the guard's earshot. "I can't BELIEVE he bought that!"

"You're a troublemaker..." Kyro accused his protectee.

"Hey, I got us through the gate didn't I?" Callista looked up at the red fairy.

"What are you going to do when the guard sees you come down without the brother you told him you had?" Michael asked.

"I'll figure that out when I'm done here," the kokiri answered as she made her way up the mountain.

"Umm... Callista, you might want to move..." The gold fairy looked ahead of the path worriedly.

The kokiri looked at Michael questioningly. "Why's that?"

"Look ahead!" The gold fairy answered.

Callista looked up the path. A giant boulder was heading straight for her.

"Oh crud..." The kokiri tried to run to the side but only managed a couple steps before the boulder slammed into her, sending her flying into the rock wall to her right.

The boulder slowed as it rolled past Callista, eventually coming to a stop. The kokiri and fairies watched as the boulder uncurled into a goron.

'What kinda creature is that?' Callista wondered as she stared at the goron.

The goron walked up to the kokiri. "Are you okay? I'm sorry, I didn't see you there until it was too late to stop..."

"Yeah, I'm fine," Callista replied, "Why were you in such a hurry? Did something bad happen?"

The goron nodded. "My brothers are trapped in the crater at the top of the mountain. Me and a few other gorons tried to help, but we can't get to them."

"Maybe I can help," the kokiri offered, "If you don't mind taking me up there and showing me where they are.

The goron smiled at Callista. "That would be GREAT!" He curled himself into a ball. "Follow me to Goron City. We need to talk to the elder before we can climb up the mountain." The goron began rolling slowly up the path.

The kokiri followed the goron up the path toward Goron City.

"Hey Callista, I have a question," Kyro hovered around Callista's right shoulder as she ran after the goron.

"What is it?" Callista kept her gaze fixed straight ahead at the goron.

"If somebody asked you to follow them into a bottomless pit, would you?" The red fairy half-smirked.

"Depends. Is there someone in that bottomless pit that needs rescued?" The kokiri asked.

Kyro sighed and shook his head. "These adventures are going to be the death of all three of us..."

"Like I've said before, you don't HAVE to follow me!" Callista snapped at the red fairy.

By this time, the group had entered a large cave. A path ran around the wall, sloped down to the next level, and ran along the wall there before sloping down to the level below it, then ran halfway around the wall before sloping down to the bottom level. There was a small platform in the center of the cave that was attacked to the top level by three thin rock/dirt bridges. Several boulders lay in various places in the cave.

Callista looked around the cave. "Is this it?"

The goron nodded. "Its usually a bit more lively, but we're all worried about our brothers."

Callista nodded. "Where's the elder at?"

"See that room on the bottom level?" The goron pointed to an opening in the rock wall on the bottom level. A square brown mat marked its entrance.

The kokiri looked where the goron was pointing. "Yes."

"That's his room," the goron replied, "He should be there."

"Okay. I'll meet you down there." Callista jumped off the edge of the path and landed on the path below. She jumped down to the next path, then to the ground on the bottom level.

The goron rolled down the path, eventually stopping next to the kokiri. He walked through the opening in the rock wall.

Callista and her fairies followed the goron through the opening toward a large room. The room was bare save for a few pots and a statue on the far wall. A large goron with a long beard and brown-gray hair that spiked away from his head stood in front of the statue.

The goron elder looked at the other goron, then at Callista. "Is that all the king would send?"

"I never made it to the king," the younger goron answered, "We're kind of in a hurry, and she was on the way up the mountain and agreed to help..."

The goron elder thought for a moment. "Not exactly what I hoped for, but I guess I'll have to make do..." He pulled a reddish-brown tunic off the wall next to the statue and handed it to Callista. "Wear this. It should protect you from the heat."

The kokiri slipped the tunic on over her zora and kokiri tunics.

"That is definitely NOT your color," Kyro said to Callista as she slipped the tunic on, "But what color does look good on you?"

"That's what I'd like to know about you!" The kokiri stuck her tongue out at the red fairy.

Michael sighed and shook his head. "You two aren't going to start THIS again, are you?"

"Mind your own business, Michael!" Callista snapped at the gold fairy.

"Yeah, this is our fight!" Kyro shouted.

"Why do I even bother...?" Michael said more to himself than anyone else.

The kokiri turned to goron elder. "I'll have your friends brought back here as soon as possible. I promise." She turned to the goron that led her into the city. "Mind showing me the way? This is the first time I've ever been up here."

"Sure." The goron nodded. "You ready to go?"

"Yes," Callista answered, "By the way, what do I call you?"

"Dero," the goron answered.

Callista smiled at the goron. "Okay then, Dero, lead the way."

Dero nodded, curled into a ball, and rolled out of the room. The kokiri and fairies ran after him.

"You four be careful!" the goron elder shouted as the group sped away.

"Don't worry!" Callista shouted back as she tried to keep up with Dero's rolling.

The goron, kokiri, and fairies exited Goron City and started up the trail leading to Death Mountain's summit.

"How did your brothers get trapped anyway?" Callista asked as they climbed up the mountain.

"We were all in the caves inside the crater getting a drink from the lava pools when the ground started shaking and the path leading to the room some of us were in collapsed," Dero answered, "We tried to clear the way, but we couldn't dig through the rocks. Our special crop could clear the rocks away, but using more than one would risk destroying the caves..."

"How could I be any help then?" the kokiri asked.

"We should be able to clear away all the rocks in one blast if we can position one of our special crops near the middle of the path," the goron replied, "There are gaps in the rubble that are too small for a goron to fit through, but it shouldn't be too hard for someone your size."

"Ah..." Callista continued to follow the goron up the mountain's steep slope until she felt the ground rumble near her feet.

"Did you feel that?" The kokiri asked the goron.

"Feel what?" The goron asked, stopping.

Callista shook her head. "Nothing. I thought I felt the mountain shake, but I guess it's just me.

"Oh, that." The goron chucked. "When you get this far up the mountain, it shakes from time to time."

Then, the ground beneath the kokiri's and goron's feet shook again, more violently this time.

Callista placed her left hand on Dero's right shoulder to stabilize herself. "Are they normally that violent?"

The goron shook his head.

"Something's not right, then..." The kokiri slowly continued. She only managed to take a few steps before the ground under her collapsed, leaving a small circular hole where she had been standing.

"Callista!" Dero ran toward the hole and looked down. Kyro and Michael flew into the hole after the kokiri. The fairies entered a marble hall that led to a large room filled with water. Waterfalls that went up as far as the eye could see made up the walls. A narrow marble path led to the back of the room, where a small, shallow, hexagonal pool sat. Two torches with bright orange flames stood at the end of either side of the path. Between the torches, painted on the path, was a gold triforce shape.

The kokiri approached the group when she saw them. "Look at this! It somewhat resembles the fairy fountain in the Lost Woods!"

"I've heard about this..." Michael said as he looked around. "There are six Great Fairies in Hyrule, and they are said to live in places like this..."

Callista started to walk down the path. "Let's check it out then. If it's true, maybe she can help us rescue the gorons." She stopped at the edge of the water. "Hey, anyone here?"

"She's not going to come if you call her like that," Michael replied.

The kokiri looked at the gold fairy. "What am I supposed to do, then? Clap?"

"Sing," Michael suggested.

Callista raised an eyebrow at the gold fairy. "What kind of answer is THAT?"

"Well, you don't have any musical instruments," Michael replied.

"What's that got to do with anything?" The kokiri asked.

"According to legend, there's a song that summons the great fairies," the gold fairy answered.

"I'd think even you could have figured that one out," Kyro replied.

Callista glared at the red fairy. "Shut up!"

"Make me!" Kyro snapped.

"Gladly!" The kokiri swiped at the red fairy, but he flew out of her reach.

"Is that the best you can do?" Kyro taunted.

Callista growled, jumped, and caught the red fairy.

"Ow! Hey, don't grab so hard!" Kyro struggled against the kokiri's grip.

"I'll squeeze tighter if you don't keep quiet!" Callista threatened.

Kyro did not say another word.

"What's going on out here?"

"Where'd that come from?" Callista asked as the group looked around for the source of the voice.

A woman with long red hair and a skimpy outfit rose out of the fountain and hovered in the air in front of the group. The fairy's face had a maniacal expression and may have been otherwise pretty of not for the heavy makeup.

"Is that her?" The kokiri wondered.

Michael nodded.

"She needs to lay off the face paint," Callista stated as she stared at the fairy.

"I heard that!" The great fairy glared at the kokiri.

"Good, then maybe you'll act on it," the kokiri replied.

The great fairy crossed her arms and looked away from the group, her nose pointed toward the ceiling. "Hmph! Kids today have NO respect..."

"You expect respect when you paint your face and wear almost nothing?" Callista let out a small laugh. "You look like one of those women that stand by the path and ask guys if they're looking for a good time."

"Callista! Hush!" Michael ordered.

"Fine... But its true," the kokiri said.

The gold fairy sighed and shook his head.

"What are you doing down here, anyway?" the great fairy asked. "People don't go through all the trouble of finding this place just to look around."

The gold fairy spoke up. "A few gorons are trapped in the crater. We were hoping you'd be able to help us free them."

"I'd LIKE to help you," the great fairy replied, "But it seems one of you has a problem with the way I dress."

Callista growled. "I'm sorry, okay? Now come on, there are lives at stake here!"

The fairy thought for a moment. "I guess I could offer SOME assistance..." She looked toward the kokiri and concentrated. Callista lifted a few inches off the ground and surrounded by a red light.

The guardian fairies watched as the great fairy concentrated.

"What is she doing?" Kyro asked after a moment.

Michael shrugged.

After a few minutes, Callista was lowered back to the ground. The light surrounding her faded, and then disappeared.

The kokiri slowly opened her eyes. "Whoa..."

The great fairy opened her eyes and looked down at Callista. "You can now use your magic abilities."

"I wasn't aware I HAD any magic ability..." The kokiri said.

The great fairy nodded to the two. "Most everybody has SOME magic power. Some people just have difficulty using it until it's unlocked."

"Ah... Just how the heck do I use it?" Callista asked.

"I'll let you figure that one out on your own." The fairy laughed maniacally and disappeared. The group was instantly transported out of the fountain.

"That has to have been one of the strangest people I've ever met," the kokiri stated as she, Kyro, and Michael reappeared in front of Dero.

"Not as strange as a certain kokiri I know," the Kyro replied.

Callista ignored the red fairy. "There must be something about fairies that makes them all act oddly.

"Hey! That insult includes me too!" Michael shouted.

The kokiri smirked. "I know."

"Callista doesn't love us," Kyro replied.

"I just don't love you," Callista said to the red fairy.

"That'd hurt if I cared," Kyro retorted.

"Too bad you don't then." The kokiri looked to Dero. "Shall we continue?"

The goron nodded. The group resumed their climb to the mountain's summit.

After a short while, the group reached the top of Death Mountain.

Callista looked around. "Wow... I can almost see the forest from up here..."

Kyro smirked. "Getting homesick?"

"No way!" The kokiri spotted what looked like the entrance to a cave. "Is that where the other gorons are, Dero?"

The goron nodded.

"Okay, let's get this party started." Callista ran toward the crater entrance, followed by her fairies.

Dero followed the kokiri. "Party? I thought you came here to help me rescue my brothers..."

"Its just an expression," Callista said as she, Kyro, and Michael entered the crater.

"Oh. Okay." Dero entered after the kokiri.

"Man, its hot in here!" The red fairy exclaimed as the group walked further into the crater.

"Well yeah, we ARE inside a volcano," the gold fairy replied.

Callista shrugged. "Feels fine to me."

Kyro flew into the shoulder of the kokiri's tunic. "This is better. I'm staying here until I'm needed."

"Good idea." Michael followed the red fairy's lead.

Callista looked up at Dero. "Care to lead the way?"

The goron nodded and walked ahead of the kokiri across a bridge and to a small piece of ground suspended above the lava.

Callista followed the goron and looked around. The piece of ground she and Dero were standing on was surrounded by lava with no way off other than the bridge they had just crossed. "Umm... now what?"

"We walk," the goron answered simply. He started walking across the lava toward a distant rock wall.

The kokiri stared in shock at the goron. "He's walking on liquid fire like its grass..."

Dero looked back at Callista and the fairies. "Are you coming?"

"Umm... Yeah, I suppose so..." The kokiri slowly moved her right foot over the lava. Her boot caught on fire. She repeatedly stomped on the piece of ground she was standing on to put out the flame.

Kyro laughed. "You never were the brightest kokiri in the woods..."

"Quiet, Wing-Boy!" Callista snapped at the red fairy.

"Not my fault you're an idiot," Kyro replied.

The kokiri glared at the red fairy. "Its your fault you are!"

"You don't even know the meaning of the word," Kyro replied

"Better than you do!" Callista quipped

The red fairy rolled his eyes. "Whatever, Blondie."

"Red glowball!" The kokiri stuck her tongue out at Kyro.

"Enough, you two!" Michael shouted at his companions.

"He/she started it!" Callista and Kyro replied in unison.

"Yeah, well, you both need to end it," the gold fairy stated.

Just then, a large rock fell into the lava, nearly splashing the molten rock on the kokiri. Another rock fell a couple feet behind the first, and another a couple feet behind the second.

"What the heck...?" Callista looked ahead and saw Dero tossing the rocks into the lava, forming a bridge.

"Hurry up!" The goron shouted at the kokiri once the bridge was finished. "The rocks won't stay above the lava for very long!"

Callista nodded and ran across the rocks before they sank. The fairies followed.

"How the heck were you able to walk across that?" The kokiri asked Dero once she had reached the other side.

The goron shrugged.

Callista walked away from the goron toward a crumbled section of the crater wall. "The gorons are behind here right?"

"Yes." Dero nodded.

"Hmmm..." The kokiri examined the rubble. She found a large opening near the bottom of the collapsed tunnel and squeezed through. "Hey Michael, Kyro, get in here! Its too dark to see..."

"How about a please?" Kyro replied.

"How about a now before I rip your wings off?" Callista snapped.

"Okay, fine..." The red fairy flew into the tunnel, followed by Michael.

Dero reached into the opening in the rubble and handed a bomb to the kokiri. "That will go off in a matter of minutes. Think you can get it in place and our of the way in time?"

"Sure thing." Callista took the bomb and climbed deeper into the collapsed path.

Kyro smirked. "All those times you had to crawl into small spaces to escape Sato really paid off."

"Shut up, you!" The kokiri snapped at the red fairy as she crawled through the rubble."

"You can't make me," Kyro stuck his tongue out at Callista.

"You just wait until this is over," the kokiri said to the red fairy.

"Assuming we all survive," Kyro replied.

Callista stopped for a second once she reached what she thought to be the halfway point and set the bomb down. "You have no faith in me whatsoever."

The red fairy stopped a few inches in front of the kokiri and watched as she placed the bomb on the ground next to her. "Of course I don't. I know you."

"Whatever." Callista continued to progress through the tunnel. "Come on, we need to make it to the other side before that thing blows."

"That would be a good thing." Kyro flew after the kokiri, followed by Michael.

After a couple minutes, the trio entered a large circular room. Four gorons were curled up in the center of the room, but other than the gorons and a few piles of rocks, the room was empty.

Callista stood up and walked to the four gorons. She tapped one of the gorons on his back. "Hey, you! Get up!"

The goron groaned and uncurled. He looked at the kokiri. "Who are you? How did you get here?"

"That's not important right now," Callista answered. "What's important is that I'm going to get you out of here."

"How?" The goron questioned.

"Watch," the kokiri replied, staring at the collapsed tunnel.

A loud explosion sounded throughout the room. The rubble that had previously been blocking the room's exit shot out in every direction, almost hitting the kokiri, fairies, and gorons, who raised their arms in front of their faces, shielding them from the dust and debris.

After a moment, Callista lowered her arms and glanced at the tunnel. All the rocks that had been blocking it were gone.

"It worked..." The kokiri thought out loud.

"Yay! We're free!" One of the gorons around Callista shouted with joy. He and the others ran through the tunnel toward Dero.

The kokiri ran after the gorons, followed by her fairies.

Dero ran to Callista and greeted her with a near bone-crushing hug. "Thank you SO MUCH for helping!"

The kokiri woman just nodded; she was barely managing to breathe, much less speak.

Just then, the ground shook violently. Chunks of rock few up out of the mountain's top and the ground the group was standing on started to sink into the lava. Several chunks of rock fell toward the group.

Without thinking, Callista pointed her sword at the rocks and fired a beam of green light at the rock chunks, destroying them.

'So THAT'S how it's done...' The kokiri thought to herself as she watched the remains of the rock chunks fall harmlessly into the lava.

Just then, the ground shook a second time. Callista placed her arm on Dero's back to keep herself from falling.

The goron picked the kokiri up as the lava made its way across the platform they were standing on and ran toward the crater's exit. The other gorons curled up and rolled after him. Kyro and Michael followed the group.

"That's one place I won't be revisiting for awhile..." The kokiri woman climbed out of Dero's arms.

Dero nodded at Callista, then turned to the other gorons. "Are we ready to head back to Goron City?"

"Yeah!" The gorons shouted in unison.

Dero smiled at the kokiri and fairies. "You three come with us. I'm sure our elder will be happy to see you." He rolled down the mountain, followed by the other gorons.

Callista turned to Kyro and Michael. "Race you!" She started down the mountain.

"Better go and make sure she doesn't fall and break her neck like the idiot she is." The red fairy darted after the kokiri.

"Good idea." The gold fairy followed his two companions.

The gorons, kokiri, and fairies stopped once they reached the entrance to Goron City, where the goron elder was waiting.

The goron elder smiled at the group as they approached. "So you succeeded after all. Well done." He turned to Callista. "My brothers and I owe you much."

The kokiri shook her head. "You don't owe me anything. I'm just glad everyone's safe now."

"You sure?" the goron elder asked.

Callista nodded, then looked to the path leading down the mountain. "I really should be going..."

"Very well." The goron elder smiled at the other gorons. "Come on, everyone. Let's see our new sister and brothers off!"

Kyro and Michael flew out of reach as all the gorons surrounded the kokiri and trapped her in a group hug.

"Gack!" Callista struggled to free herself from the gorons' grip.

The red fairy laughed as the kokiri struggled. "One little hug is not going to kill you."

"Yeah? You get down here then!" Callista glared at Kyro.

After what seemed like ages, the gorons pulled away from the kokiri. Callista ran as fast as she could down the path leading to Kakariko. Her fairies darted after her.

The kokiri stopped running once she was halfway down the path and sat down, panting. "Phew... I could almost feel my ribs breaking..."

Kyro smirked. "If you're THAT weak, why do you keep putting yourself in dangerous situations?"

Callista glared at the red fairy. "You try being smashed between ten tons of rock and see how you feel afterwards!"

Just then, the mountain shook more violently than it had all the other times while the kokiri and fairies were on it. The sky grew dark and chunks of rock flew everywhere.

"What the heck is going on?!" Callista wondered as she watched the rocks fall. She looked up at the top of the mountain. Rocks, ash, smoke, and lava were all pouring out of the crater at a rapid pace.

"Callista, look!" Michael motioned toward Kakariko City. Chunks of rock had already damaged some of the buildings and the ground was almost completely covered with ash.

The kokiri watched as a large chunk of rock hit one of the houses and stood up. "Come on, you two! We've gotta help them!" She resumed running down the mountain toward the city.

"Callista, wait!" Michael flew after the kokiri.

Kyro sighed and shook his head. "Here goes..." He darted after his two companions.
