The Adventures of Callista the Kokiri
The city of Kakariko was in complete chaos. The citizens of the city were running, screaming, and shouting as the rock and ash fell onto and around them, trying desperately to get out of harms way. Chunks of rock had destroyed the gate leading to the volcano as well as several buildings, and more were being damaged by the minute.
Callista rushed into the city and looked around. Wow What a mess
Your hair or Kakariko? Kyro spoke up from behind the kokiri.
Callista glared at the red fairy. One more comment like that and Ill turn you into a mess stuck on the sole of my boot!
Im so scared, Kyro replied sarcastically.
Nows not the time, you two, Michael scolded his companions.
Right, the kokiri and fairies entered the city, being careful to stay out of the way of its inhabitants.
Just then, a woman's cry came to the travelers' ears. Callista, Kyro, and Michael turned toward the source of the cry, a woman standing in front of a large building that looked as if it was about to collapse. The woman had brown eyes and wore a long-sleeved dress. She, like everything else in the area, was covered with ash from the volcano.
The kokiri ran up to the woman, followed by the fairies. Shouldnt you be fleeing with the others?
The woman shook her head. My husbands still in there!
Ill go after him. You go find somewhere safe to stay for now. Callista started toward the building. Michael dashed after her.
The woman just stood and watched as the kokiri dashed through the door of her house.
What are you waiting for? Get going! Kyro shouted at the woman before following his companions.
The woman hesitated for a moment, and then ran away from the building.
Callista looked around once she was a good distance inside the house. The inside of the building looked almost as bad as the outside. The walls and ceiling were crumbling most of the furniture was broken and/or scattered throughout the house.
Do you two see anyone yet? the kokiri asked the fairies.
No, Michael replied.
Just a stupid forest girl in a house thats about to go down on top of her. Kyro smirked.
I dont see you offering to help anyone! Callista snapped at the red fairy.
Whos there? A male voice came from a few rooms away.
The kokiri ran into the room and saw a man trapped under a large pile of rubble. The man had short dark brown hair and brown eyes, and wore a dark red long-sleeve shirt, black pants, and boots. He looked to be slightly older than the woman she encountered at the front of the building.
Callista started to pull the pieces of wall and ceiling off the man. Dont worry, Im here to help.
I dont need your help! The man struggled to free himself from the rubble.
Obviously, the kokiri smirked slightly and lifted a large slab of wood off the man, allowing him to crawl out of the pile.
The man stood and dusted himself off. Who are you, anyway?
Therell be time for introductions later, Callista replied, Right now we need to get out of here!
Just then, a large chunk of volcanic rock landed between the hylian and the kokiri.
Right. The man ran toward the houses exit as what was left of the buildings ceiling started to crumble.
Callista glanced up at her fairies. Im not sure its all that wise for you two to stay airborne.
Right. Michael landed on the kokiris shoulder.
Callista looked up at Kyro. You too, Red.
The red fairy raised an eyebrow at the kokiri. Since when do you care about my well-being?
Callista glared at her red guardian. I can withdraw my offer.
Fine Kyro landed next to Michael.
Callista jumped back as another rock landed near her, then ran toward the houses exit, barely making it outside before the entire house came crashing down.
Close call, the red fairy stated once the trio arrived outside the building.
If Callista heard Kyro, she did not show it. She was looking around the city, trying to see if anyone else was around. She coughed as volcanic ash entered her lungs.
We should probably evacuate with the others, Michael said to the kokiri.
Callista shook her head. Not until Im sure everyone else is safe.
Umm You dont have much time to look Kyro replied as he stared toward the mountain.
The kokiri looked at the red fairy questioningly. What makes you say that?
Look toward the volcano, Kyro replied.
Callista glanced at Death Mountain and gasped. A thick stream of lava had already made its way down the mountain and was heading toward the city at a rapid pace.
As if the ash and falling rocks werent enough the kokiri mumbled as she ran through the city.
Kyro smirked. Just try not to step in the stuff this time.
Callista glared at the red fairy. You shut up!
Kyro glared back. Make me!
The kokiri grabbed the red fairy. How about I toss you into the lava?
You wouldnt, Kyro replied calmly.
Callista smirked. I dunno, its VERY tempting
The lavas going to burn both of you if you stand there and argue all day, Michael spoke up.
The kokiri glanced back at the lava. By this time it had entered the city and was heading toward her. She released Kyro, allowing him to perch on her shoulder, and started running away from the molten rock.
Just then, the kokiri heard the scream of what sounded like a young child from somewhere above her.
Callista looked around, and then up at the top of the lookout tower. She could barely see a small form at the towers top.
What are they doing all the way up there?! The kokiri exclaimed as she ran toward the tower. She reached the tower and started climbing up the long ladder as the lava continued to flow toward her.
Callista, what are you doing?! Michael shouted at the woman as she climbed.
Saving that kid, Callista answered, Whats it look like?
You wont do them any good by killing yourself, the gold fairy replied.
The kokiri continued her climb. Relax. I know what Im doing.
The metal at the base of the lookout tower started to melt as the lava drew closer. The tower began to tip forward.
Callista closed her eyes and held on tight as the tower moved, and then continued up the ladder, not daring to look down. She climbed onto the tower's top and looked down, noticing the lava was mere inches away.
Now what? Kyro asked the kokiri as she stared at the lava.
Callista looked around. The tower was falling toward the windmill. We jump. She knelt next to the child, a young hylian girl. You, climb on my back and hold on tight. Unless you wanna be burned alive.
The child did as she was told. Callista jumped onto the railing surrounding the top of the lookout, then leapt toward the windmill. Her fingers grasped the top of the windmill firmly, stopping her fall.
After a short struggle, the kokiri was able to pull herself onto the top of the windmill. She watched as the lookout tower fell the rest of the way down and melted in the lava. Hope I never have to do THAT again...
The child just nodded.
What were you doing up there, anyway? Michael asked. Dont you know its dangerous? Especially with all this going on. He motioned toward the volcano.
I was looking for my mommy and daddy, the child answered, I lost them while we were running away.
You would have been separated from them forever if youd stayed up there much longer, Callista replied.
The child just nodded.
The kokiri shrugged. No sense worrying about that now, I guess. Come on, lets get out of here. Well look for your parents later. She looked down at the child. What do we call you?
"Riana," the girl answered. "Do you really think we'll be able to find them?"
Callista smiled. I KNOW we will!
Said the woman that couldnt navigate her way out of a paper bag if she tried, Kyro spoke up.
The woman growled at the fairy. No one asked you!
No one had to, the red fairy replied, Im perfectly capable of speaking on my own.
Unfortunately Callista looked down at the ground. Now, the trick is getting down from here without killing ourselves
The roofs of the buildings around here look stable enough, Michael replied.
The kokiri shook her head. I dont think I can jump that far
Hey, you!
Callista looked down toward the source of the voice. A man wearing armor similar to the guard that stood by the Death Mountain gate was standing on the roof of a small building to her left, holding a small metal object.
The guard held the object out toward the kokiri. Here, grab onto this! A long chain shot out of the object.
Callista reached out and grabbed the chain as it flew past her. She wrapped an arm around Riana and allowed the chain to pull her onto the roof the man was on.
The kokiri let go of the chain and the child once they were on the roof and smiled at the man. Thanks.
The man nodded and motioned toward the town's exit. "We don't have much time, so we had better get moving."
Did everyone else get out? Callista asked.
As far as I know, the man answered. He jumped off the roof to a patch of ground that was somewhat higher than the ground that the lava had been traveling across.
Callista held Riana and jumped off the roof, landing next to the man. The two ran until they came to the bridge the kokiri had crossed to enter the city the day before. The citizens of Kakariko were on the other side of the bridge.
We should be safe now The man said once the group was a short distance away from the city.
Until Callista gets us into more trouble, Kyro mumbled as he and Michael began hovering around the kokiri woman.
Mommy! The child struggled to free herself from Callistas grip, and then ran across the bridge and toward a group of Kakarikans.
The kokiri turned to thank the man that had helped her escape, but he was already on the other side of the bridge, making sure the survivors were okay.
Callista watched the group for a moment, and then glanced back at the destroyed city. I guess this is our cue to leave...
Where to now? Michael wondered.
"That way." Kyro motioned toward Callista, who was already running away from the destroyed city.
The gold fairy groaned. That girl just cant stay put, can she?
Nope, the red fairy replied before flying after the kokiri. Michael followed close behind.
