‘The sky looks beautiful tonight…’ A lone figure thought to himself as he watched the sun sink below the horizon from atop a large skyscraper in the city near Dr. Light’s laboratory. Only the top of the reddish orb could be seen now, and the bright red, orange, and yellow evening sky was gradually being replaced by the dark blue, star-studded night sky. The figure was short, standing at almost four feet, nine inches. He was dressed in a light gray fighting uniform with red gloves and boots, a red belt, a yellow scarf, and a red helmet lined with white around the black visor that completely covered his eyes. A red and white welding shield was strapped to his back. This was Blues Light, better known as Proto Man or Break Man. He was the first humanlike robot Dr. Light had created. He disappeared before Mega Man was built, but had been discovered during the third Wily War. He now lives with Dr. Light, his creations, and a couple robots the kind doctor had taken in. The time he had spent on his own permanently affected his personality, however, and he tended to run off by himself on occasion.
‘Hmmm… I think I’ll take a walk through the park before heading home…’ Proto Man jumped off the roof of the skyscraper and onto the roof of a small building. He then jumped down onto the street and ran into an alley. He had made it halfway through the alley when something tugged on the back of his scarf, stopping him and almost knocking him off his feet. He spun around, coming face-to-stomach with a tall, muscular human with tan skin, brown hair, and blue eyes. The man wore a black t-shirt, black shoes, and blue jeans and carried a long, thick chain.
The man glared down at the robot. “You should know better than to be out here so late, kid. Your parents are probably worried about you.”
Proto Man smirked to himself. ‘Heh… He thinks I’m a kid…’
The man picked the robot up by his neck and slammed him into the wall of a nearby building. “You really shouldn’t have come out here. Little kids like you can and do get hurt when they’re caught outside after bedtime.”
“Gee, I’m so scared…” Proto Man replied sarcastically.
The man growled. “You will be!” He brought his right first back and aimed at the robot’s nose.
“Hold it!”
The man stopped his punch and spun around. A teenage girl with short blonde hair and blue eyes stood a short distance behind him. She wore a white t-shirt, a yellow vest, yellow shorts, and black sandals. She stood at around the same height as Proto Man.
The man dropped the robot and glanced at the girl. “What the heck are you doing here?”
“That’s what I’d like to know about you.” The girl glanced back at the man, showing no sign of fear in spite of the fact that he was nearly twice her size.
“This isn’t the kind of place for small girls to be hanging around,” the man said to the teenager.
The girl smirked. “I guess you should be going on home then.”
The man glared at the teenager. “You’re asking for a beating.”
The girl assumed a fighting stance. “Go ahead and try it!”
‘What does she think she’s doing?!’ Proto Man thought to himself as he stared at the two humans.
The man punched at the teenager. The girl ducked under the punch and kicked the man’s feet out from under him.
The girl smirked at the man as he fell. “Care to try that again?”
The man jumped to his feet and kicked at the teenager. The girl grabbed his leg and tossed him over her shoulder, causing him to crash face-first onto the ground behind her.
“I’ve had enough of this…” The man swung his chain at the teenager. The girl held her arms over her head and closed her eyes, bracing herself for the impact she was sure would come.
“What the?!” The man yanked on the chain he was holding. It felt as if the chain had caught on something. He spun around and noticed Proto Man holding the other end of the chain.
The robot smirked at the man. “Even you should know better than to attack a weaponless foe.”
The man growled. “Who do you think you are?!”
Proto Man smirked and banged on his chest with his free hand, producing a clanging sound. “Who do you think?”
The man’s eyes grew wide. ‘A robot?!’
The red robot’s smirk grew bigger. “I suggest you run.”
The man glared at Proto Man for a moment, then let go of the chain and ran out of the alley.
The teenage girl glanced at the robot. “You okay?”
“I’m fine,” Proto Man replied. “It’s you I’m concerned about.”
The girl giggled. “I’ve taken down tougher guys on my own.” She studied the robot for a moment. “You’re Proto Man, right?”
Proto Man nodded.
“Thought so,” the teenager replied. “I recognized that armor.”
“Why’d you try to save me from that man?” the robot asked.
“You’re not allowed to hurt humans,” the girl answered. “And I’m sure you’d rather not just sit there and take a beating.”
Proto Man chuckled. “Yeah.”
The teenager extended her right hand. “By the way, my name’s Harmony.”
The robot took the hand. “Nice name.”
“Thanks.” Harmony smiled.
“It’s getting late…” Proto Man replied. “The both of us should probably be getting home.”
The teenager nodded. “I’m usually at the park on weekday afternoons and Saturday nights, if you ever want to come see me.”
The robot nodded back and ran out of the alley.
‘Well, that was rude!’ Harmony watched Proto Man run. ‘Didn’t even say goodbye… Oh well…’ She walked out of the alley. ‘I need to be getting home too so my mom won’t kill me…’ She ran along the street toward her home.
“Rocky, aren’t you done yet?” A green and brown robot dog that closely resembled Rush scratched at the gate leading into Mega Man’s room. “You’ve been in there for HOURS!”
“I’ll be out in a minute!” The blue robot’s voice came from inside the room.
Roll walked up to the canine. “Is he STILL in there?”
The robot dog nodded.
“What’s he working on this time?” the blonde robot wondered.
“Remember that nearly destroyed hoverbike he found the other day?” the canine asked. Roll nodded. “That.”
“Finished!” Mega Man opened the gate leading into his room and walked out, dragging a hoverbike with him.
The robot dog stared at the bike. “Wow… Doesn’t look like it was damaged at all…”
The blue robot grinned at the green robot. “Hey Ocarina, wanna take it on a test drive with me?”
The canine transformed into a green and brown humanoid robot with armor similar to Mega Man’s. “Sure!”
The blue robot grinned. “Okay then, come on!” He started to drag the hoverbike toward the gate leading outside the lab. Ocarina rushed ahead to open the gate for the blue bomber.
“If you see Blues, drag him back home with you!” Roll shouted after the two robots.
Mega Man stopped. “He’s still out there?”
The green robot nodded. “Yeah, he never came home.”
“We’ll look for him.” The blue robot pushed the bike through the gate leading outside the lab and climbed on. Ocarina hopped on behind Mega Man and the two rode off.
‘Wow, it’s late. That fight must’ve taken longer than I thought…’ Proto Man thought to himself as he glanced at the moon, which was now high in the night sky. ‘The others are probably wondering where the heck I am now. Maybe I should just teleport back…’
“BLUES!”
The red robot turned toward the source of the voice. His brother and Ocarina rode up to him on a hoverbike.
The blue-clad robot grinned at Proto Man as he approached. “Blues! There you are!”
The red robot nodded. “Yep, here I am.”
“We were starting to wonder where you’d run off to this time,” the green robot spoke up.
Proto Man shrugged. “Well, now you know.”
“Is something wrong?” Mega Man asked his brother. “Usually you’re home before now.”
The red robot shook his head. “Some human thought he was tougher than me, that’s all.”
“You didn’t fight any humans, did you?” the blue robot asked worriedly.
“’Course not,” Proto Man replied. “Even if I wanted to, someone else beat me to it.”
“Wily?” Mega Man asked, and then thought for a moment. “No, that makes no sense. Why would he help you?”
The red robot shook his head. “It wasn’t Wily or his robots. It was a human girl.”
The blue robot smirked. “You have a girlfriend now?”
“HECK no!” Proto Man shouted at his brother. “I barely even know her!”
Mega Man chuckled. “Right…”
The red robot turned away. “Hmph.”
“Makes me glad I don’t have a brother,” Ocarina said to herself as she watched her two companions.
Proto Man turned toward the green robot. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You two fight constantly,” Ocarina replied.
“His fault,” the red robot stated.
“You wish!” Mega Man stuck his tongue out at his brother.
Proto Man smirked and grabbed the tongue.
“Hey! Leth go!” the blue robot protested, or tried to.
Proto Man chuckled. “What’s the matter, bro? Cat got your tongue?”
Mega Man half-glared at his brother. “I thaith leth go!”
The red robot pouted. “Aww… What’s the fun in that?”
Ocarina pulled Proto Man’s bandana off his neck and ran off.
“Hey!” The red robot let go of Mega Man’s tongue and chased after the green robot. Ocarina giggled, jumped into a nearby tree, and laid the bandana on the bottom branch. Proto Man jumped up, grabbed the bandana, landed, and tied it around his neck. “What was that all about?”
The green robot jumped out of the tree and landed in front of the red robot, grinning. “I got you to let go of Rocky.”
Proto Man glared at Ocarina. “You know better than to even touch my bandana.”
“You wouldn’t hurt me,” the green robot stated matter-of-factly.
The red robot looked at Ocarina. “What makes you so sure?”
“I would never forgive you, for one,” Mega Man joined in the conversation. “And you wouldn’t seriously injure an ally.”
“Heh…You’re right…” Proto Man responded.
The blue robot climbed back onto the hoverbike. “Come on, let’s go home. Dr. Light’s probably worried about you and wondering where Rina and I ran off to.”
The red robot looked at the bike. “Is there enough room for all three of us on that thing?”
Mega Man nodded. “Should be. There was plenty of room for Rina and me on our way over here.”
Proto Man nodded and climbed on behind his brother. Ocarina climbed on behind the red robot.
Mega Man looked back at his companions. “You guys ready?”
Ocarina grinned. “Yep!”
“I am,” the red robot responded.
Mega Man activated the bike and drove as fast as he could back toward Dr. Light’s lab.
“Hey Roll, have you seen Mega Man anywhere?” Gear walked up to the housekeeping robot, who was sitting on the couch in the living room staring at the ceiling.
“He and Ocarina went out to find Proto Man,” Roll replied. “Why?”
“I need to ask him if I can borrow his Gamecube,” the dark green Bass look-alike answered. “I wanna play Super Smash Bros. Melee.”
“I think his door’s unlocked. Just go in there and take it,” the blonde robot suggested.
Gear shook his head. “Rush’ll attack me.”
Roll giggled. “Scared of a little red mutt are you?”
“HECK no!” the dark green robot shouted.
The blonde robot waved Gear away. “Then go and get it already.”
Just then, the lab’s front door opened.
“We’re home!” Ocarina announced as she rushed into the lab, plopping down on the couch next to Roll.
The blonde robot turned to look at Mega Man as he entered the lab. “Find him?”
The blue robot nodded. “He was in the park.”
Roll rolled her eyes. “Again?”
Proto Man walked into the lab. “Of course.”
The blonde robot looked at the red robot. “Why?”
Proto Man shrugged. “I like it there. It’s peaceful and quiet, unlike here.”
“That’s true…” Roll replied.
“It’s peaceful and quiet here,” Gear responded.
Just then, Rush ran by the dark green robot, holding a Sephiroth doll in his mouth.
Gear’s eyes grew wide. “Hey, that’s MINE!” He started chasing after the robot dog. “Get back here, you little thief!”
Proto Man chuckled. “Yeah, very peaceful and quiet, indeed.”
Ocarina giggled. “I keep telling him to keep his door shut.”
The red robot shrugged. “It’s not like a little brother to listen to anybody.”
Mega Man shot Proto Man an angry look. “Hey!”
The red robot laughed.
“Grrrr…” The blue robot tackled his brother.
“Gack!” Proto Man exclaimed as he fell to the ground.
Mega Man grinned mischievously as he pinned his brother down. “You’re going to pay for what you said.”
The red robot smirked. “What are you going to do? Pin me to death?”
“No...” The blue robot moved his hands to Proto Man’s sides. “I’m going to do THIS!” He started tickling his brother.
“Gack!” The red robot starting laughing.
Mega Man grinned and moved his hands up to his brother’s neck.
Proto Man started to squirm. “H-hey! Cut that out!” He managed between fits of giggles.
The blue robot laughed and continued tickling his brother. “No way! I’m having too much fun!”
Roll rolled her eyes. “You two…”
Mega Man stopped and looked at his sister. “What about us?”
Proto Man kicked his brother off of him and stood up. “Ha!”
Just then, Dr. Light entered the room. The robots all turned toward the doctor simultaneously.
Dr. Light blinked at the robots. “Did I interrupt something?”
Roll shook her head. “Nothing important.”
Mega Man approached his creator. “Something wrong, doc?”
The human shook his head. “Nothing at all. I was just wondering why it got so quiet when I came in here.”
The blonde robot giggled. “You just missed Rock brutally attacking Blues.”
Dr. Light arched an eyebrow.
Mega Man glared at his sister. “It wasn’t an ATTACK. I was TICKLING him!”
Proto Man rubbed his neck. “I’D call it an attack. You KNOW I have a sensitive neck!”
Ocarina looked at the red robot and tilted her head to the side. “Is that why you always wear that scarf?”
Proto Man shook his head. “Nah, that just makes me look cool.”
“In your mind,” Roll responded.
The red robot half-glared at his sister.
Dr. Light chuckled slightly, then yawned. “It’s getting late… I think I’ll go to bed. Don’t stay up too late.” He walked off toward his room.
“We won’t,” Roll called after the doctor.
“Awww… What’s the fun in that?” Proto Man pouted.
The blonde robot rolled her eyes.
The red robot looked at his sister. “Whaaaaaaaat?”
Roll shook her head. “Forget it.” She stood up. “I think I’m gonna hit the sack too. You guys had better not do anything to wake me up.” With that, the blonde robot walked off.
The red robot snorted. “Who died and made her queen?”
Mega Man shrugged.
Ocarina giggled. “The dust bunny king? He knows all and sees all and is the supreme ruler of all the land.”
Proto Man arched an eyebrow at the green robot, even though it remained hidden behind his visor. “Whatever you say, Rina.”
“So… What do we do now?” the blue robot asked.
“We could try to shove french fries up each other’s noses,” Ocarina suggested.
“…You’re the weirdest robot I know, Ocarina,” the red robot said to the green one.
Ocarina giggled. “I know.”
Proto Man smirked. “I could grab some popcorn and watch the two of you make out.”
Mega Man blushed deeply. “I don’t think so…”
The red robot laughed. “You know you want to.”
The blue robot blushed deeper. “I would NEVER… Especially in front of someone.”
“I guess not.” Proto Man snickered. “Kind of hard to make out with someone if you blush at the mere mention of chicken breasts.”
“Can we change the subject?” Mega Man blushed deeper. “I feel like I’m overheating…”
Ocarina giggled. “Aww… But you look so cute when you blush…”
“Heh…” The blue robot lowered his gaze.
The red robot rolled his eyes. “Sheesh, bro! You get embarrassed WAY to easily…”
Mega Man glanced at his brother. “And you don’t get embarrassed easily enough.”
Proto Man glanced back at the blue robot. “What do you mean?”
“What about that time you streaked through the dance club shouting ‘Look at me, I’m Captain No Pants’?” Mega Man questioned.
The red robot shrugged. “I was drunk.”
“You were never embarrassed about it, even after you sobered up,” the blue robot pointed out.
Proto Man smirked. “You make the fact that I’m not ashamed of my body sound like a bad thing.”
“It’s not,” Mega Man responded. “But you still shouldn’t show it off in public.”
The red robot shrugged again. “Eh.”
The blue robot yawned and stretched. “I think I’ll head on to bed… Goodnight.” He walked out of the room.
Proto Man watched his brother leave the room. “Heh… Everyone’s getting tired but us.”
The red robot received no response.
Proto Man looked around. “Rina?”
Still no response.
“Hey!” Proto Man exclaimed as he continued searching. “Where did you go?” He added mentally, ‘I’m supposed to be the mysterious one that slips away unnoticed.’
Just then, a faint snoring sound could be heard.
‘Huh?’ Proto Man looked toward the source of the sound. Ocarina was curled up on the couch, fast asleep.
The red robot chuckled and shook his head. “Correction: Everyone’s getting tired but ME… Oh well…” He walked into his room, locked the door, removed his helmet, and sat down on his bed.
‘Man, what a day…’ Proto Man thought to himself as he lay back on the bed. His thoughts turned toward his adventure in the city. ‘Where did that blonde girl come from, anyway? I’ve never seen her before…’ He smiled mentally. ‘She sure could fight, especially for someone her size. And she was kinda cute…’
The last thought startled the red robot. ‘Where did that thought come from?!’ He had never been particularly fond of humans. He felt that he and his brother (Mostly his brother) were protecting them solely because they could not protect themselves. Now, here he was thinking one of them was attractive.
Proto Man sighed. ‘I’m losing it…’ He crawled under the covers. ‘Oh well, maybe I’ll forget all about it tomorrow…’ He yawned and fell asleep.
