The Legend of Hiro:

The Chosen Five

Chapter 1 - Introduction/The Forest Warrior Revealed

Written by Blues Wolfox with help and character contributions from SFRusher and Dracos

Darkness… Silence… Restlessness…

For too long have I sat here. Watching… Waiting…

Imprisonment…Hatred…

The goddesses! How dare they keep me trapped here!

Hatred! Vengeance!

I shall make them pay for this! Just as soon as I am freed…

The Temple of Time was empty as usual, save for the Master Sword and the young man who once wielded it.

It has been eight long years since Ganon – Formerly the evil Gerudo king, Ganondorf – was defeated at the hands of Link, whom the evil king believed was only a mere forest boy. Ganondorf had greatly underestimated the Hero of Time and was banished to the Dark World as a result.

Now, Link was sitting beside the Master Sword, lost in thought. He was glad for the peace Ganon’s defeat had brought, but now that the evil king was gone Link felt as if he had no purpose. Eight years ago he had fulfilled his role as the Hero of Time. Now what was he to do?

Link sighed and leaned back against the steps leading to the sword, then fell back as the steps gave way, revealing a tunnel leading down under the platform where the Master Sword rested.

Link blinked in surprise. He had never seen that tunnel before. After staring for a moment, he walked into the tunnel. Maybe some exploration would take his mind off of things.

Light! Shadows!

Who is it that has unlocked my prison? I must see!

Link walked through the tunnel until he came to a large room. Inside the room was a pillar that reached halfway up to the ceiling. On top of the pillar was a large, black sphere.

‘What’s this?’ Link wondered as he approached the sphere. He placed his hands on its smooth surface.

Freedom!!! Revenge will be mine!!

“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Link flew back a great distance as a painful burst of energy shot through his body.

I’m free!!! This body does not seem to be the strongest in the world, but it will have to do…

That voice! Where was it coming from? It seemed to be speaking from inside Link’s head. The young hylian tried to stand up, but found himself already standing. This puzzled him. He was sure he had been knocked down.

Now to get rid of this nuisance…

That voice again! This time, Link didn’t have very long to think about it. As soon as the voice was done speaking, another painful burst of energy shot through him, knocking him out.

Rauru sat on a platform, reading the ancient scrolls written by the old prophets of Hyrule. He had read them all before, but since the Hero of Time had defeated Ganondorf and restored peace to Hyrule, there wasn’t too much for the old sage to do.

Suddenly, a scroll that looked like it hadn’t been opened in ages caught Rauru’s eye. The Light Sage picked the scroll up and looked it over.

‘Strange… I don’t remember seeing this before…’ Rauru unrolled the scroll and read it:

From dark to light and light to dark
Hyrule’s peace will soon depart.
It’s up to the chosen of the five locations
To rise and aid in Hyrule’s restoration.
From the mountain, forest, swamp, desert, and lake;
The five chosen ones, it is their fate.
Gather them near the royal door.
The Prince shall bring peace to the land once more.

Rauru frowned as he read. This did not look good. He took a deep breath and sighed. The other sages would have to be informed as soon as possible.

A small kokiri girl sat on the low branch of one of the trees near the entrance to the Kokiri Forest from the Lost Woods, playing her ocarina. Her guardian fairy sat on her shoulder, listening quietly to the music.

“Hey, Short Stuff!” Mido ran up to the girl.

The girl sighed. She hated that nickname. Mido and the other forest children often called her names relating to “short” or “young” because she was the smallest and youngest looking of the kokiri.

“Feel free to call me by my name.” The kokiri girl stopped playing her ocarina and jumped off the tree branch, landing on both feet in front of the red-haired boy.

Mido shrugged. “Where’s your sister at?”

“She had some important business to attend to with the other sages,” the girl answered. “I thought she told you…”

“Hmph!” Mido looked away. “She never tells me anything!! I’m the boss of the kokiri, I should be the first person that’s informed of these things!”

The kokiri girl’s fairy rolled her eyes. “Boss of the Kokiri? Yeah, whatever.”

Mido glared at the fairy. “Aylia, you need to learn how to keep your fairy’s mouth shut!”

The fairy looked at Mido’s fairy. “Fala, you need to learn how to keep your kokiri’s mouth shut!”

”Mila!” Aylia shouted at her fairy. She tried to glare at the blue glow-ball, but that was hard to do while suppressing laughter.

Mido growled. “You’re lucky that you’re Saria’s sister, and that I don’t hit small girls!” He stormed off.

“Good riddance, jerk…” Mila mumbled once Mido was out of earshot.

“I wish you two would be nicer to each other,” Aylia said to the fairy.

“Ha! I’ll be nice when he learns that he’s not the most important thing in existence!” Mila turned away.

“The Great Deku Tree DID make him our leader…” Aylia replied. “But if he would try to be a bit nicer to others, he’d have some REAL friends instead of everyone being nice to him purely out of fear…”

“Yeah, but what are you going to do?” Mila asked.

“Hope he learns someday. Nothing else anyone can do, not even Saria. She’s tried…” Aylia sighed, then shrugged. “I guess there’s no use worrying about something you have no control over…” She smiled at Mila. “Race you home!” She took off toward her house.

“Hey, wait up!” Mila darted after the Kokiri girl.

“Mikon!” a young goron rolled across the path and up and down the floors of Goron City. He stopped next to a teenage Goron wearing red shorts and eating rocks. “Mikon! There you are! I’ve been looking all over for you!”

“Why’d you do that? I was right here.” Mikon tossed a few pebbles into his mouth.

“Dad had to go to the Chamber of Sages!” the young goron exclaimed.

“I know. He told everyone before he left.” Mikon continued to eat.

“Aren’t you scared?” the other goron asked, “Rauru wouldn’t summon Father unless there was something really bad going on!”

“You worry too much, Link,” Mikon replied. “For all we know, Rauru could just need a bookshelf moved or something.”

“I don’t think so.” Link shook his head.

“It can’t be anything TOO serious. Ganondorf was sealed in the Dark World. He can’t get out,” Mikon said while munching on a rock. “Even if he did, we still have the Hylian Link to stop him.”

“If you say so…” Link rolled away from the teenage goron.

SPLASH!

A young zora man dove into the water from the top of the giant waterfall in Zora’s Domain. He swam gracefully through the water until he reached a platform floating in the middle of the water, then surfaced and climbed onto the platform.

“Is that the best you can do, Kale?” called a female zora that looked to be a few years older than the first. Kale looked up at the top of the waterfall, where the female zora was currently standing. “Lamari? What are YOU doing here?!”

“Looking for you!” Lamari yelled. “Mom fixed supper and we’re all waiting for you to quit goofing around here so we can eat!”

“Tell them I’ll be there in a minute!” Kale yelled back.

Lamari dove down the waterfall, swam to the platform, and grabbed Kale’s ankles. “You’re coming NOW!” She pulled him off the platform and into the water and dragged him toward the tunnel leading to Lake Hylia.

Two gerudo women circled each other in one of the rooms in the Gerudo Fortress, their scimitars drawn. Each was glaring at the other.

“Don’t think I’ll go easy on you THIS time, Fenora!” the taller gerudo said to the shorter.

“Heh, whatever.” Fenora leapt at her opponent, swinging her scimitars. The other gerudo stepped aside, leaving her rival to attack an empty space.

Fenora faced the taller gerudo. “You’re good, Farrah, but you’ll never measure up to Link!”

“That male? Don’t make me laugh!” Farrah slashed at Fenora, who blocked.

“Male or not, he’s still a remarkable swordsman.” Fenora replied as she ducked and kicked at Farrah’s legs in an attempt to trip the taller woman.

Farrah jumped straight up, avoiding Fenora’s kick. “ANYONE could have defeated Ganondork if they tried!”

“Everyone besides Link that tried to defeat Ganondorf failed!” Fenora blocked Farrah’s scimitars again.

“I wouldn’t have if I could have fought instead of watching you!” Farrah pushed her weight forward into the swords until Fenora fell to the floor. Then she held one of her scimitars right above Fenora’s throat. The point of the other scimitar was held against Fenora’s chest.

Farrah smirked at her opponent. “You lose!”

Fenora smirked back, “That’s because I let you win!”

“Yeah, sure. Whatever.” Farrah put the scimitars up and started to walk away.

Fenora stood up. “Where are you going?”

“Desert Colossus,” Farrah answered.

“Again?” Fenora looked up at the other gerudo. “Didn’t you go there yesterday?”

Farrah looked back at Fenora. “I like it there. Is that a problem?”

“I guess not,” Fenora replied.

“Good.” Farrah resumed her walk, leaving Fenora alone in the room.

A young deku scrub sat alone on a fallen log, watching a female scrub as she chatted with friends.

“She’ll never like you.” An older deku scrub walked up to the scrub sitting on the log.

“What do you know, Daq?” The younger deku scrub glared at the older.

“More than you do, bark-for-brains!” Daq shot back. “Ele would rather kiss a moblin than a pathetic little weed like you!”

“Why are you always so mean to me?” the first deku scrub asked.

“Because you deserve it, loser!” the older scrub answered. “You can’t do a single thing right! You’ll never amount to anything!”

“I don’t have to listen to you!” the younger deku scrub ran off.

“Boo hoo! I’m so sad! I want my mommy!” Daq laughed cruelly.

The young scrub did his best to ignore the bully and just kept running.

A young man of about 18 years walked through the many halls in Hyrule Castle. He had short white/blond hair, blue eyes, and dark blue and silver armor. Three bright red streaks of war paint surrounded his eyes, and a blue v-shaped mark decorated his forehead. He carried with him a large sword with a curved yellow blade that had a curved jade green blade attached to the tip.

The man stopped at Zelda’s room and opened the door.

Zelda was sitting on her bed, brushing her hair. She turned toward the man after hearing the door open. “Hiro! I thought it would be you. Everyone else is polite enough to knock first.”

“Well, excuuuUUUUUUUUUSE me, Princess!” Hiro stuck his tongue out at Princess Zelda.

Zelda rolled her eyes. “Be glad you’re my brother. People have been arrested for less than that!”

“You wouldn’t happen to have seen Link anywhere, would you?” Hiro asked his sister. “He’s supposed to be training me right now!”

“He went to the Temple of Time a while ago,” Zelda replied. “He should be back by now…”

“I’ll keep looking.” Hiro walked away from Zelda’s room and continued his search. After searching for half an hour, he finally found the missing hero.

“Hey, Link! Over here!” Hiro shouted as he ran up to the Hero of Time.

Link turned toward Hiro and just stared at him.

Hiro stopped running once he saw Link’s face. There was an evil glint in Link’s eyes.

“Hey, is something wrong?” Hiro gave his mentor a concerned look.

Link glared at the prince, his eyes darkened until they were completely black.

“Link? What’s wrong with you?” Hiro asked the hero.

Without warning, Link fired a large ball of dark magic at Hiro. The force threw the prince back toward the end of the hallway the two hylians were standing in. Link smirked and ran off.

“Hey…wait..” Hiro tried to pick himself up and run after his mentor, but only managed to take a few steps before collapsing and losing consciousness.

Link chuckled to himself as he ran. ‘That hylian was such a weakling! Destroying this world will be easier than I thought…’ He ran up the spiral of stairs leading to the top of the castle’s left tower. ‘Yes, this will do…’ Link chuckled evilly. The sky around Hyrule Castle darkened until it appeared to be nighttime as he summoned a large amount of black magic. ‘Now, where do I start? Ah, yes…’ He sent a large wave of dark energy toward the southeastern part of Hyrule.

The Six Sages – Rauru, Saria, Darunia, Ruto, Impa, and Nabooru – were all gathered in the Chamber of Sages.

“What’s going on?” Nabooru asked Rauru. “Why did you summon us here?

“While reading over the ancient legends, I came across something that may be of the utmost importance.” The old sage showed the others the scroll.

Nabooru swiped the scroll and read it aloud:

From dark to light and light to dark
Hyrule’s peace will soon depart.
It’s up to the chosen of the five locations
To rise and aid in Hyrule’s restoration.
From the mountain, forest, swamp, desert, and lake;
The five chosen ones, it is their fate.
Gather them near the royal door.
The Prince shall bring peace to the land once more.

The Spirit Sage looked at Rauru. “What’s THIS supposed to mean?”

“Apparently, Ganondorf isn’t the only one who has chosen to follow the path of evil,” Impa spoke up.

The Light Sage nodded. “There is a legend that speaks of a time shortly after Hyrule’s creation. In the legend, there was a god who hated the goddesses. He tried to destroy the land they had worked so hard to create, but the goddesses were able to stop him. They sealed the god underneath where the Temple of Time now stands. It was thought that he could not escape and wreck havoc on Hyrule again.” Rauru looked at the ground. “It seems that somehow the seal was broken when the Hero of Time discovered the dark god’s prison.”

“What has become of Link?” Ruto asked; her voice was filled with worry.

“The Evil One has completely taken over his body. His spirit lies dormant, but is safe…for now.”

“Saria?” Darunia turned to the kokiri girl, who appeared to be lost in thought.

“I’m trying to think…” Saria stated.

“Don’t hurt yourself,” Nabooru said with a smirk. Ruto and Darunia chuckled.

Saria stuck her tongue out at the gerudo, then the zora and goron. “The five chosen ones come from the mountain, lake, desert, swamp, and forest. There’s only one mountain, desert, and forest in Hyrule. As far as lakes go, there’s Lake Hylia, but the legend could also mean Zora’s Domain. We recently found a path in the Lost Woods that leads to a swamp.”

“So what do we do? Go to all these places, walk up to everyone we find, and say ‘Excuse me, ma’am or sir, are you one of the five chosen ones mentioned in this legend we just found?’”

“The chosen five will reveal themselves in time,” Rauru replied. “For now, we must—“ He stopped abruptly as a large wave of dark energy passed over the chamber, shaking the ground slightly as it traveled down it’s path.

“What an awful force…” Ruto commented.

“Even Ganondorf’s magic didn’t feel so evil…” Impa agreed.

“It seems that the Chosen of the Forest will soon make himself known,” Rauru stated.

“Is that where the dark magic was headed?” Ruto asked?

Rauru nodded.

Saria turned her gaze toward the floor.

Darunia frowned; he knew exactly what Saria was thinking. He looked at Rauru. “I think Saria should go check that out.”

Rauru nodded again. “Good idea. If the chosen one does appear, they will need to know of their fate.” He looked at Saria. “Whenever you are ready, you may go.”

The Forest Sage nodded. “I’ll get right on it!” She grinned thankfully at Darunia, who grinned back, then left the Chamber in a ball of green light.

Aylia and Mila continued their race through the Lost Woods until a great darkness – like a black cloud – enveloped them. As the darkness passed over them, the ground began to shake, knocking the kokiri girl off her feet.

Aylia looked around. “Mila, I can’t see a thing! What’s going on?”

“I don’t know,” Mila answered. “But it can’t be good!”

The darkness passed and the earth became still. Aylia jumped to her feet and ran into the Kokiri Forest. She looked around and gasped, horrified by what she saw. All the kokiri children lay on the ground, motionless. Their guardian fairies were nowhere to be seen.

“What happened to everyone?” Aylia asked, running toward the nearest kokiri.

Before Mila could respond, a loud roar erupted from the path leading to the Great Deku Tree. Aylia and Mila turned toward the sound. What looked like a much larger version of a deku baba with multiple appendages – each with a deku baba head of it’s own – emerged out of the path leading toward the Great Deku Tree; it’s multiple heads snapping at every living thing unlucky enough to be near it.

“Oh my…” Aylia stared at the monster. “What is that thing?”

“That would be the master baba,” Mila answered. “The leader and parent of all deku babas, at least around here.”

“It looks fierce,” Aylia stated.

Mila nodded. “It is. Now would be a good time to run. If you hurry, maybe it won’t notice you.”

The kokiri looked at her fairy. “And leave everyone else out here to be eaten?! No way!”

“Do you have a better idea?” the fairy asked.

“You won’t think so.” Aylia pulled her slingshot off her belt and readied a deku seed. She fired at the creature’s main head. “Hey you! Yeah you, flower face! You wanna pick on someone smaller than you? Well, I’m about as small as they come! I’m not afraid to take you on! Come get me, if you think you’re plant enough!”

The master baba turned its heads toward Aylia, then charged at her.

“Now what are you going to do?” Mila asked.

“Ummm…” Aylia started to think.

“You don’t know?!” Mila shrieked.

“I’m kinda makin’ this up as I go along.” Aylia confessed.

“Well, if you want to keep your head on your shoulders, I suggest you make the rest of your plan up on the run!” the guardian fairy advised.

Aylia leapt out of the way as the monster’s main head came crashing down where she had been standing. “Yeah. Good idea!” She ran away from the master baba, heading for the nearest climbable wall.

Saria appeared in the Kokiri Forest in a flash of green light. The Forest Sage stared in shock at her surroundings. She saw the same sight Aylia had seen.

The kokiri girl kneeled by one of the kokiri children and shook her gently. “Ria, wake up!” No response. “Ria!!” She shook the child harder. Ria let out a faint groan.

‘At least she’s alive…’ Saria stood up and, hearing a roar, turned her head to the left.

The master deku baba leaned against the cliff near the entrance to the Lost Woods, snapping as something on top of the cliff. Saria’s eyes widened in fear as she recognized what the monster was snapping at.

“Aylia!!!” Saria shouted to her sister, hoping she could hear.

Aylia heard Saria call her and looked down. “Saria!! Get out of here before this thing comes after you too!”

There wasn’t any way Saria was going to abandon her sister! She thought for a moment, then remembered the Kokiri Sword. “Hang on, Aylia, I’ll be right back!” Saria shouted. The Forest Sage dashed toward Link’s house, climbed up the ladder, ran inside, and looked around. She found the sword under Link’s bed and smiled. She knew she could count on the young hylian’s laziness! The kokiri girl grabbed the sword and hurried back outside. She leapt over the railing and ran up to the master baba.

“How about picking on someone a little closer to your own size!” Saria shouted at the plant as she slashed a head off one of the baba’s limbs.

The monster screeched in pain and lowered it’s head toward Saria, who swung at it. The baba rammed it’s main head into Saria, sending her flying back into a tree.

“Saria!!” Aylia jumped off the edge of the cliff and ran toward the now unconscious Forest Sage. She grabbed the Kokiri Sword and faced the baba. “I’ve had enough of this! One way or another, I will finish you!” A faint green light surrounded the small kokiri as she talked and slowly grew brighter.

‘Whaaa?’ Saria slowly opened one eye. ‘What’s going on?’ She saw Aylia standing in front of her, wielding the Kokiri Sword and surrounded by a bright green light. The Forest Sage watched as the light spread to the blade of the Kokiri Sword.

With a loud yell, Aylia leapt at the master deku baba’s stem and sliced though it at a downward angle, cutting the monster in half. She continued to hack at the baba until all it’s heads had been severed. The light died down as Aylia finished and the small kokiri girl fell to her knees.

“Whoa… That was weird…” Aylia stared at the baba’s remains, which were slowly evaporating into a green mist and vanishing.

Saria slowly stood up and approached her sister. The Forest Sage noticed something green on Aylia’s right arm, under her tunic sleeve. Saria lifted the sleeve up to Aylia’s shoulder, revealing a slowly fading Forest symbol. “Oh my…”

“What’s wrong?” Aylia looked up at her sister.

“Aylia, there’s something I think you should know…” Saria replied.

“What’s that?” the small kokiri asked.

“The reason Rauru summoned me and the other Sages was because he recently found a scroll containing an ancient prophecy. According to this prophecy, an evil force that’s even greater than Ganondorf was will ruin the peace and prosperity of Hyrule. The only ones who can stop this evil are five warriors chosen by fate. These five come from the forest, the mountain, the lake, the desert, and the swamp.” Saria lowered her gaze. “The prophecy has come true.”

“That would explain that monster you two fought, the darkness in the sky earlier, and what happened to the other kokiri and the guardian fairies.” Mila thought aloud.

“So now you have to find the warriors, right?” Aylia inquired.

Saria nodded. “I believe the Forest Warrior has already been discovered.”

“Really? Where is he?” the small kokiri wondered.

Saria just stared at her sister.

Aylia caught on. “Me?”

The Forest Sage nodded. “No doubt about it.”

Aylia smiled. “Wow! That’s awesome!”

“I hope you’ll still think so after you’ve been in a few battles.” Saria stood up. “I’m going to go check on the Great Deku Tree and see if there’s anything I can do to help the others. You can either go back home and rest or start the search for the other warriors.”

Aylia nodded and jumped to her feet. “I won’t let you down, sis!” She ran off, followed by Mila.

'I hope she’s able to handle what lies ahead…' Saria watched her sister as she left the forest, then headed toward the Great Deku Tree’s meadow.

The sun slowly set below the mountaintops behind Gerudo Valley, gradually allowing darkness to take over. Normally, the moon and stars would appear as the sun vanished and light up the land, but there would be no moon or stars tonight. Not with the dark god around.

One creature in Hyrule knew this better than anyone. He knew of the chosen five and their task. He also knew that they would need guidance. That was why he was here: perched on a low branch of a tree near the Kokiri Forest, watching the entrance patiently. The Chosen of the Forest would be starting her journey soon.

Then, he saw her. The Forest Warrior and her fairy entered Hyrule Field and looked around. The kokiri girl held the Kokiri Sword at the ready, as if expecting something to jump out and attack her.

“I have been waiting for you, Aylia,” the creature addressed the kokiri girl.

Aylia looked around. “Huh? Who said that?!”

“Look up!” the creature ordered. Aylia did so. ‘Whoa! That’s the biggest owl I’ve ever seen!’

“The Chosen of the Mountain is about to be revealed.” The owl pointed toward Death Mountain with it’s left wing.  “There is a town at the base of that mountain. Meet me there and I’ll explain everything.” The owl started to fly off.

“Wait! You could at least tell me your—“ Too late, the owl was already gone.  “…Name…”  Aylia shrugged and started her trek across Hyrule Field toward Death Mountain.
