The Legend of Hiro:

The Chosen Five

Chapter 2 - Aylia and the Mountain Man

Written by Blues Wolfox with help and character contributions from SFRusher and Dracos

‘Ah, it feels great to be back in Hyrule!’ a young woman with large blue eyes and waist-length wavy blue hair entered the Kokiri Forest from the Lost Woods. The woman wore a plain blue sleeveless dress that covered everything below the top of her chest and above the lower half of her thighs. Most of her back was exposed, allowing her long, transparent wings freedom of movement. Around her neck was a sapphire blue amulet. Her feet were bare; she didn’t wear shoes. Up until recently, she had little use for them. She flew when she wanted to go from one place to another.

‘Oh…my…gosh…’ the woman looked around the forest. The kokiri still lay motionless on the forest floor. Besides herself, there were no other fairies in sight. She could guess why; the forest was overcome by dark magic, which repelled fairies easily.

“Navi, is that you?” a familiar voice asked.

“Saria?” the woman looked down at the kokiri girl as she approached.

Saria stopped and looked up at the fairy, who was of average height for a hylian woman. “Wow… you really went through with it.”

Navi nodded. “What’s going on here?! Why are all the kokiri laying around like that?”

“Hyrule’s under attack,” Saria answered. “You see, there’s this god that hates the three goddesses. He just broke free from his prison and is attacking Hyrule one area at a time.”

“That’s terrible!” Navi exclaimed. “Where is he? And where’s Link?”

“They’re both in Hyrule Castle,” Saria answered. “But I must warn you—“

“SorrynotimetolistentomoretalkIgottagohelpLink!” Navi flew off at full speed toward Hyrule Castle.

“…That Link’s been possessed…” Saria sighed. “This has NOT been a good day…”

It was a calm, quiet night in Kakariko Town. The only sound was the soft music coming from inside the windmill as it turned slowly in the wind. The citizens of the town had either fallen asleep or were getting ready for bed. The whole town—outside and inside the many buildings—was dark. A lone tree stood near the entrance to the town, surrounded by bushes. A year ago, a pale, thin young man sat by this tree at this time of night, complaining to all who would listen about how disgusting people were. This man had since wondered into the Lost Woods and disappeared. Some of the town‘s inhabitants believe he was turned into a monster by the magic in the forest. The less superstitious citizens say he left Hyrule for another land. Only a few individuals know the true fate of this sad, strange man.

“This must be it…” Aylia entered Kakariko and looked around. “Wow… It looks like the kokiri village, only bigger, and…different!”

“THAT made sense…” Mila replied sarcastically.

“Well, look! Doesn’t it remind you at least a little of our village?” Aylia asked.

Mila shrugged. “Maybe a little…”

Just then, the kokiri girl and her fairy heard the flapping of wings from close by above them. They looked up as the owl they had seen just outside the Kokiri Forest flew over them and perched on one of the lone tree’s lower branches.

“The town you are in is called ‘Kakariko,’” the owl explained. “It used to be a village with only a fraction of it’s present population, but most of the people from Hyrule Castle Town settled here during Ganondorf’s reign.”

Aylia nodded. “You said you’d explain everything once I got here…”

“And I shall,” the owl replied. He looked down at Aylia. “Am I correct in assuming you know the story of Hyrule’s creation?” Aylia nodded. The owl continued. “According to an ancient scroll that was recently discovered, there was a dark god that hated the three goddesses. He tried to destroy the land the goddesses had worked so hard to create, but the goddesses stopped him and sealed him below where the Temple of Time now stands. He has not been able to escape until just recently, when the Hero of Time Stumbled upon his prison. Now, the dark god is using the hero’s body to attack Hyrule one area at a time.”

“Has he attacked anywhere besides the forest?” Aylia asked.

The owl shook his head. “But he is preparing his dark magic to use on Death Mountain; namely, the Goron City. That is where the Chosen of the Mountain is thought to be.”

“How do I know when I’ve found the chosen one?” Aylia asked.

“The chosen one will make himself known when he is faced with a danger that only the powers locked inside of him can eliminate,” the owl answered. “His body will glow and the mountain symbol will appear on his right arm near his shoulder.”

“I see…” Aylia looked up at the mountain. “So now I have to find the Goron City, right?”

The owl nodded. “The city is located about halfway up the mountain.”

“All right…” Aylia looked back a the owl. “Before I go, I have one more question.”

“Yes?” the owl looked back at the kokiri girl.

“What do I call you?” Aylia asked.

“I am known as Kaepora Gaebora.” The owl answered.

“Whoa… that’s a long name!” Aylia said. “I think I’ll just call you Kappy.” She smiled at the owl. “Well, I’m off! See you later, Kappy!” she ran off toward the base of Death Mountain.

“Aylia, not so fast!” Mila ran after her protectee.

Kaepora watched the kokiri and her fairy leave. “Good luck, Aylia. May the goddesses protect you.” With that, he flew off.

The energy created by the dark god swirled rapidly in the air a short distance above Hyrule Castle. The energy, which looked like one large, spiraling black cloud, completely blotted out the night sky, which seemed to be bright as day in comparison.

Link laughed cruelly as he stood on the left tower of Hyrule Castle, arms still held high in the air. From his palms shot two cone-shaped beams of dark energy. These beams formed together in the sky and created the center of the swirling mass of energy above Hyrule.

‘The kokiri have fallen to my power. Now, who’s next…?’ Link thought to himself, looking around Hyrule Field from where he stood atop the tower. He stopped looking around when he spotted Death Mountain. ‘Ah yes, the gorons! Fat, dopey creatures… Why Farore wasted her time creating that race is beyond me…’ He turned his whole body to face the mountain, then started gathering energy for the attack.

Navi ran as fast as she could toward Hyrule Castle, her wings folded tightly against her back. The dark energy coming from the castle pushed against her, severely hindering her progress. Is she were a normal-sized fairy, she would not have been able to go near even the lost woods due to the energy, but now that she was bigger, she was able to stand more of the evil power.

‘Hang on, Link, I’m coming…’ the fairy woman thought as she ran. ‘I won’t let you fight this enemy alone…’

Link had finished gathering energy and was about to attack Goron City when he saw a small figure approach him. He watched as the figure, which turned out to be a woman with blue hair and fairy wings flew toward the tower he was standing on.

“Link!!!” The woman landed on top of the tower, folded her wings, and wrapped her arms around the hylian. “I’m so sorry I left you! I missed you so much!”

Link pushed the woman away from him. “Who are you?”

“Don’t you recognize me?” the woman asked. “It’s me, Navi! Sheesh, I figured you’d at least remember my voice! I had to nag you constantly during our quest to save Hyrule eight years ago! Anyway, I’m back! Now we can fight the god together!”

Link stared coldly into the fairy’s eyes, which caused her to shudder. Link usually had a soft, gentle expression on his face. Now it was filled with hate. Navi also sensed something different about Link. Something evil…

“Stay out of my way, fairy!” Link fired a medium-sized blast of black magic at Navi. The blast hit the fairy woman directly in the chest. With a loud, pain-filled cry, Navi flew back and collapsed near the edge of the tower.

“Link…” A tear rolled down Navi’s cheek as she looked up at the Hero of Time. “What’s happened to you? Why are you doing this?”

Link said nothing. He just thrust his palms out toward the fairy and gathered his dark magic in a ball in front of his hands, preparing to fire the magic blast at his old companion.

“Uuuhhh…. Talk about having a blast…” Hiro opened his eyes and slowly rose to a sitting position. He was in the same hall he had confronted Link in. Only now, this hall was dark. “Man, how long have I been out?”

Suddenly, he heard a loud cry from one of the castle’s towers.

“That sounded like…Navi!!!” Hiro jumped to his feet. ‘She must have found Link! Crud! I gotta go save her!’ He started to run, but crashed into the wall to his right. ‘Uhh… Heh… Once I get my sense of direction back…’ He ran toward the opposite end of the hall, turned right into the next hall, then up a spiraling staircase that led to the top of Link’s tower. Once he reached the top of the stairs, he saw Navi laying helpless a few feet away from Link, who was preparing a magic blast to fire at the fairy. “Uh oh. This isn’t good…” The prince ran between the fairy and the hylian, who had by now fired the magic blast, and blocked the attack with his sword. The force of the blast caused Hiro’s sword to crack in several places.”

“I see you survived your last stroke of idiocy,” Link smirked at the prince. “I wasn’t expecting to see you so soon but now that you’re here perhaps I can have a little fun!” He fired another blast of dark energy at Hiro’s sword, this time completely shattering it.

‘Uh oh…’ Hiro blinked; his eyes were wide with shock. ‘It’s a good thing I came prepared!’ He reached behind his back and pulled a Great Fairy’s sword from the sheath attached to his shoulder belt and the Mirror Shield Link had given him for doing well during their training sessions.

Link readied his Biggoron’s sword and hylian shield. “Is this how you want to play? Very well, let’s see how you do in a fair fight!” Link charged at Hiro and swung his sword once he was close enough.

“The heck?!?” Hiro jumped back, narrowly escaping the blade. “The Biggoron’s sword is a two-handed sword! How can you use that and a shield at the same time?!”

Link chuckled. “I have my ways…”

Hiro raised his sword in the air and sliced downward at Link, who blocked with his shield.

“I hope that’s not the best you can do!” Link held his shield up high enough to thrust his sword at Hiro’s stomach.

“I’m just getting warmed up!” Hiro blocked the thrust with his shield, then thrust his sword at Link’s chest.

Link leapt into the air and landed on the blade of Hiro’s sword. He raised his sword into the air and sliced downward at the prince.

Hiro held his shield up to block Link’s attack, then swung his sword, knocking Link off.

Link landed on his feet and jumped away from Hiro. Then he pulled a longshot off his belt, fired it at one of the castle’s windows, and used it to swing himself to several platforms and eventually to the right tower. “Come get me, if you still think you can win!”

Hiro back-jumped across the platforms leading to the right tower. Once he reached the tower, he grabbed the edge and pulled himself up.

“Impressive… But this is getting old.” Link fired a dark energy blast at Hiro, who countered with a light energy blast. Link’s blast was more powerful, however. It absorbed the light energy and hit Hiro directly on the stomach. The force of the blast sent him flying off the tower.

“Hiro, hold on!” Navi was finally able to shake the effects of the dark energy off. She dove down under Hiro, caught him, and used her wings to slow their fall. The two landed in the moat.

Link chuckled to himself. “That takes care of them. Now, where was I? Oh yes…” He faced Death Mountain and sent a large wave of dark energy toward Goron City.

The path leading up Death Mountain toward Goron City was long and treacherous. The path sloped steeply upward toward the middle of the large mountain. The mountain was made more dangerous by the several red tektites that inhabited it and by the boulders that rolled down the path.

Aylia thrust her sword upward as a tektite attempted to pounce on her. The tektite’s underside met with the sword’s tip. It screeched in pain and tried to jump away. Aylia pulled the sword out of the tektite and swung at the spider-like monster. The sword sliced cleanly through the tektite, cutting the creature in half. The two halves vaporized.

“These guys aren’t so tough!” Aylia said as she put the kokiri sword away.

Mila heard a light rumbling sound and looked straight ahead. A large boulder was rolling down the path toward the green-haired kokiri girl. “Aylia, watch out!”

“Huh?” Aylia glanced ahead and saw the boulder. “Eep!” She leaped aside as the boulder raced past, barely missing her. The kokiri girl landed on her side a few inches away from the cliff edge of the path.

“Close one…” Mila stated.

“No kidding…” Aylia rose to her feet and looked around. Seeing no more tektites, boulders, or any other obstacles that might get in her way, she resumed her trek up the path toward Goron City.

Hiro and Navi fought their way to the surface of the moat water and swam toward the dry ground. Once out of the moat, the hylian and the fairy shook themselves dry as best as they could and sat where they were, panting heavily. Their wet hair stuck to the back of their heads and necks and Hiro’s war paint had washed off.

“Are you okay?” Navi asked the prince after they both had caught their breath.

“Yeah, I’m okay…” Hiro replied.

“I wonder what’s gotten into Link…” Navi looked down. “He’s never acted like this before…”

“I don’t know…” Hiro looked at his reflection in the moat and noticed the war paint had washed off. His face now closely resembled Link’s. “But I’m going to go find out.” He stood up and looked at Navi. “You should try to find a safe place to stay until this is taken care of. I know fairies are weak against dark magic.”

Navi nodded. “I hope whatever came over Link gets taken care of soon…” She stood up, unfolded her wings, and flew off toward Hyrule Field.

“Me too…” Hiro sighed. He watched Navi fly away, then walked toward the entrance of the castle, which was a short distance away.

Aylia continued up Death Mountain’s narrow path until she came to the mouth of a cave. A square platform rested not too far from the cave’s entrance, and on that platform were several rocks arranged in a circle.

“Think this is it?” the kokiri girl asked her fairy.

Mila shrugged. “Probably. It’s worth checking out at least.”

Just then, the sky turned completely black. The ground beneath Aylia shook violently, almost knocking her down.

“Not this again!” Mila complained.

Once the shaking stopped, Aylia drew her sword. “Come on, Mila! The next warrior’s about to show up!” She ran into the cave.

“Aylia! What have I told you about running off without me? It’s dangerous around here!” Mila flew after the kokiri girl.

Goron City was usually a festive place. The large, four-floored cave was unusually well lit for a cave. Loud music could be heard from everywhere in the cave. The Goron Ruby was set firmly in place in a stone slab on top of a small platform suspended above the city by a few strong, thick ropes. An oversized goron-shaped vase spun rapidly around the bottom floor of the cave. Inside the cave, on all the levels, were several small rooms. Some of these were bedrooms, one was a storage room where many delicious boulders were kept in case of an emergency such as sealing of the dodongo cavern eight years ago. A couple of these rooms were shops, and some others were passages between the floors. Images of gorons dancing lined the walls of the city. The gorons were either eating, dancing, talking amongst themselves, rolling around the narrow paths that made up each floor, or just sitting around, their bodies curled up so they looked like rocks.

…Usually…But not now…

Now the city was dark, almost too dark to see. It was also quiet; no music was to be heard inside the cave. The goron vase had stopped spinning and was now resting in the center of the bottom floor. Even the gorons had become less animated. They all sat in various places, curled up so the average non-goron could easily mistake them for boulders.

“Wow…” Aylia looked around in awe at the city of the rock folk.

“Nice…” Mila commented. “Could use a few trees though, and maybe some grass.”

Aylia got down on her hands and knees and peered over the edge of the floor she was on. On the floor below her were two small boulders with several triangle-shaped bumps on the top. The sides of the boulders were strangely smooth and lighter in color. “Odd…” She leaned over the edge to get a better look, but lost her balance. “Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!” She fell on top of the larger of the two boulders. “Oof!”

“Aylia! Are you okay?” Mila dove down toward the kokiri girl; her voice was filled with concern.

“Yeah, I’m fine!” the green-haired girl called to her fairy. “I think this rock broke my fall…”

Suddenly, with a groan, the boulder began to rise. Aylia cried out in surprise and fell to the ground as the giant rock, which now revealed itself to be a tall teenage goron wearing a pair of red shorts, stood up.

“Hey! Watch where you’re going!” The goron turned to glare at the kokiri girl, who was laying down on the ground, slowly pushing herself into a sitting position. His expression softened once he saw that she was a female, and a young girl at that. “I’m sorry, I thought you were someone else. Here…” he grabbed Aylia’s right hand with his and pulled her to her feet.

“Thanks…I think…” Aylia looked up at the goron boy. ‘Whoa…he’s huge…’

“Hey, I’m Mikon.” The goron introduced himself.

“Mikon? Nice name.” Aylia smiled. “My name’s Aylia.” She nodded toward her fairy. “That’s Mila, my guardian.”

“Nice to meet you, Aylia.” Mikon smiled back and shook the kokiri’s hand. Aylia winced; he was shaking pretty hard, and she felt like her bones would break if the goron’s grip on her hand was any tighter.

“Same here…” Aylia shook her hand rapidly once Mikon released it. She looked around. “Are all those other bumpy rocks people too?”

Mikon shook his head. "No. The bumpy rocks are rocks. The gorons are people."

“Okay…” Aylia looked around. “Where are all the other gorons?”

“They’re right here of course.” Mikon walked up to the curled-up goron closest to him and shook him gently. “Hey Ragor! Get up! We have a visitor.” The goron didn’t budge. “Ragor?” Still no response. “Must be asleep…”

“Hmm…” Aylia thought for a moment. ‘The sky turned dark while I was in the woods and when I returned the kokiri were sick…or something… I wonder…’ She ran up to another goron and tried to wake him up. She didn’t succeed. She tried a few others, but got no response from any of the curled-up gorons.

“Did you two hear something just now?” Mila asked the kokiri and the goron.

“No, why?” Aylia looked up at the fairy.

“Listen…” Mila hovered around Aylia, ready to protect her in case the sound she heard came from something dangerous.

A low growl sounded throughout the city.

“I heard that one.” Mikon replied.

Aylia drew her sword and spun around to face the source of the growl. ‘Just like in the kokiri forest. I wonder what this thing is…’

Part of the cave wall to the right of the trio, on the bottom level, collapsed as a large boulder rolled in. It unrolled into a large gray-brown dodongo-like creature with five rows of black spikes on its back and tail, a long black horn on the tip of it’s nose, and two long, sharp-looking white fangs hanging down from it’s upper jaw.

“Oh boy… This is gonna be fun…” Aylia readied her sword and shield.

“Master dodongo, a far more fierce version of the common dodongo,” Mila informed. “Be careful, ones this big are capable of breathing fire, and those spikes look rather nasty!”

“We won’t have to worry about him for long.” Aylia held her sword up in the air and leapt down at the monster. She slashed at it’s face, leaving a vertical cut across the dodongo’s left eye. It roared as its blood began to trickle into it’s already dark red eyes. The master dodongo slowly opened its mouth and took a deep breath.

“Aylia, watch out!” Mila exclaimed as the monster inhaled. The dodongo prepared to breathe it’s fire out at the kokiri girl, but something slammed into it’s front right leg.

“Picking on cute, innocent little girls, are we?” Mikon, who had curled himself into a ball and rolled off the edges of the floors in the city before crashed into the dodongo’s leg as hard as he could, was now standing next to the beast. He punched the master dodongo in the jaw, leaving a huge bruise where his fist made contact with the monster.

“Cute? Innocent?” Mila laughed hysterically.

“Hey!” Aylia stuck her tongue out at the fairy.

The dodongo turned around at an incredible speed for a beast of it’s build. It swung it’s spiked tail at the goron and the kokiri.

“Whoa!” Mikon ducked and let the tail pass over him.

Aylia jumped over the tail. “Dang! Doesn’t he have a weakness?!”

“His outside is protected, but I doubt he’s so tough on the inside,” Mila replied.

Aylia shook her head. “I am NOT crawling inside that thing’s mouth!”

Mikon walked toward the girls. “The goron special crop would work, but we don’t grow those in the city anymore.”

Mila caught some movement in the corner of her eye. She turned to see the master dodongo’s tail rushing toward the group. “Aylia look ou-“ Too late. Before Mila could finish, the tail smacked into Aylia. Aylia was lucky enough to miss the spikes, but the force of the blow sent her flying across the cave. She landed several yards away in the second floor.

“Aylia!” Mikon shouted after the kokiri girl. He glared at the master dodongo, his eyes blazing. His body started to glow a faint red color. The glow grew brighter until it was a bright crimson. He ran around the dodongo and uppercut it’s lower jaw. As if Mikon’s big, hard fists didn’t do enough damage, the red glow around him seemed to burn the monster. The force of the blow caused the front half of the master dodongo’s boy to rise off the ground. Mikon ran under the monster and punched it hard in the stomach with both fists. The dodongo roared in pain and frustration. It tried to fight back, but it’s tail, teeth, and feet couldn’t reach the goron while he was under it. Mikon punched the master dodongo’s underside a few more times. It roared each time it was hit. Mikon stopped once the monster went limp and it’s body started to dissolve into a red mist before disappearing.

“Wow…” Aylia watched the fight from where she landed on the second level of the city. “He’s a pretty good fighter…” She stood up, jumped down to the bottom level, and ran up to the teenage goron. Once she was close enough, she looked at his right arm. Sure enough, there was a glowing red mountain symbol. The symbol was fading rapidly, but that was okay. It had stayed long enough for Aylia to notice and recognize it. ‘I think we’ve found our second warrior…’

“Are you okay?” Mikon asked the kokiri girl once she reached him.

“I’m fine, thanks.” Aylia smiled at the goron. “Where’d you learn to fight like that?”

"Fight like what?" Mikon gave Aylia a confused look.

“Like you just did,” Aylia answered.

Mikon shrugged. “I dunno. I’m not even sure exactly what I did…”

“I see…” Aylia thought for a moment, then looked up at the goron’s face. “The sage Darunia lives here, right?”

Mikon nodded. “Rauru summoned him for a sage meeting earlier today and he hasn’t come back yet. Is that why you’re here.”

“Well… Not really. I’m here on a mission. It’s kind of a long story, but one I think you should hear.” Aylia smiled. “Care to know what that meeting was about?”

Mikon nodded. Aylia told him about the legend, the dark energy that attacked the forest and Death Mountain, and the fight with the master deku baba in the Kokiri Village.

“So now you’re looking for four other people from those locations?” Mikon asked once Aylia finished explaining what she had been told by Saria and Kaepora.

Aylia nodded. “Well… I WAS looking for four. I’ve found the Mountain Warrior.”

“You have?” Mikon looked at the kokiri.

“Yeah. You.” Aylia looked back at the goron.

“I’m what?” Mikon asked.

“The Chosen of the Mountain.” Aylia answered. “I know it’s hard to believe, but you’ve gotta. Hyrule’s fate rests in our hands and in the hands of three others…”

"Okay," Mikon replied.

‘He’s taking this well…’ Aylia shrugged mentally.

“Let’s head back down to Kakariko,” Mila suggested. “With any luck, someone down there will have heard news about the dark god’s next target.”

“Good idea,” Aylia replied. “Mikon?”

Mikon nodded. He led the kokiri girl and her fairy out of Goron City and down Death Mountain toward Kakariko Town.

Hiro walked through Hyrule Castle toward Zelda’s room. She was the holder of the Triforce of Wisdom, so he figured that if anyone knew what was happening, it was her. The young prince stop once he reached the door to Zelda’s room and started to open the door when he heard voices. He stopped and listened.

“So the dark god has taken over Link’s body? That would explain why he has been acting so peculiar lately.” It was Zelda’s voice. “Does the legend say how to defeat this enemy?”

“According to the legend, five chosen warriors from the forest, mountain, lake, desert, and swamp will arrive here, then the prince shall restore peace to the land.” Hiro recognized that voice as Rauru’s.

“Hiro?” Zelda again. “…I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. He seems to have a talent for fighting… What about the others?”

Rauru spoke again. “As we speak, the Forest Warrior and the Mountain Warrior are headed toward Kakariko from Death Mountain.”

‘Interesting…’ Hiro quietly walked away. He had heard all he needed to hear. The prince walked across the hall we was in toward his room, opened the door, and walked inside, closing the door behind him. He walked to his bed, reached under it, and pulled out a medium-sized box.

The prince opened the box. Inside were a green shirt, blue pants, brown boots, and a white bandanna, the clothes he wore when he felt the need to sneak out of the castle. Hiro changed into the shirt, pants, and boots and tied the bandana around his nose and mouth.

After putting the clothes he had been wearing into the box and pushing the box back under his bed, he opened the door slightly, looked around to make sure no one was watching, than quickly and quietly made his way out the door and through the hall toward the castle’s exit. He was going to find the chosen five himself! Hiro made his way through the hall and outside the castle. He ran to the left side of the castle, jumped across the moat, barely being able to grab onto the opposite edge and pull himself up without making a big splash, climbed the tree near the fence, then jumped over the fence from one of the tree’s higher branches. The prince then made his way to Hyrule Market, avoiding the soldiers (a hard thing to do considering in front of the castle is pretty much an open field). Once in the Market, Hiro crouched behind a crate near the Bazaar.. The drawbridge leading out to Hyrule Field wouldn’t open until morning. He’d have to wait until then…
