Saria sat on the ground just in front of the entrance to the Kokiri Forest and played her ocarina while waiting for her sister. She had been waiting for a few hours now, but she knew it was a long journey from Gerudo Valley to the forest. She wasn't sure exactly how long the trip was supposed to take, however, since any time she traveled a great distance, she use her sage powers to teleport.
"Hey, Big Sis!"
The Forest Sage stopped playing and looked up to see her sister run toward her, followed by a goron, a zora, a gerudo, and a hylian. She stood up and waved at the group.
"Saria!" Aylia ran up to the older kokiri and gave her a hug. "It feels like I've been away from home for AGES..."
"I can imagine..." Saria hugged back. "I'm glad you were able to make it back here in one piece."
"A-HEM!" Mila shouted, trying to get the Forest Sage's attention.
Saria giggled at the fairy. "It's great to see you again too, Mila." She looked at the rest of the group and burst out laughing.
"What's so funny?" Kale raised an eyebrow at the Forest Sage.
"I thought Nabooru was JOKING when she said she'd have to dress you guys up," Saria managed between fits of laughter.
"Huh?" The zora looked down at himself. He was still wearing his dress. "GAH!" He tore his dress and wig off, kicked off his shoes, and wiped the makeup off his face.
"I can't believe we forgot..." Hiro followed Kale's lead and got rid of his disguise.
"I think you enjoyed being dressed up as girls," Farrah smirked.
The prince and the zora glared at the gerudo.
"Hey Aylia, are you going to introduce me to your friends?" Saria asked.
"Oh yeah! Guys, I think you know my sister Saria," Aylia introduced. "Saria, these are Mikon the goron, Kale the zora, Farrah the gerudo, and Prince Hiro. Mikon, Kale, and Farrah are chosen ones and Hiro's just out helping us."
Saria smiled at the group. "It looks like the six of you have been able to make it through your journey okay so far. The reason I wanted you all to come here is because the only way to get to the last Chosen One is through the Lost Woods."
"Lost Woods..." Hiro thought for a moment. "Hey, don't you turn into a monster if you stay in there too long?"
"Yeah, that's what I heard," Kale replied.
"You'll be fine," the Forest Sage assured the two. "As long as you stay close to Aylia and Mila, you'll be protected."
"How can those two runts protect us?" The prince asked.
Mila growled at the prince. "We're not RUNTS..."
"Mila, you're only an inch tall," Hiro replied. "Most people are at least a couple FEET."
Kale looked at the prince, "Since when does size matter?"
"Yeah!" Mila stuck her tongue out at the prince.
"I can think of a few times," Farrah said with a smirk.
"Farrah! There are kids present!" Hiro shouted at the gerudo.
"I was thinking about muscles, you pervert!" The gerudo yelled at the prince.
"Ummm... What kind of 'muscles'?" Hiro asked.
Farrah shoved the prince to the ground. "Not the kind you seem to think with, that's for sure."
Kale sighed and shook his head. "Will you two PLEASE cut it out?"
"Yeah, really!" Mila agreed. "Aylia and Saria did NOT need to hear that!"
"You started it, fish boy!" Hiro accused the zora.
"*I* started it? I don't THINK so!" Kale shouted.
"You're the one that said size doesn't matter," the prince replied.
The zora growled. "I was talking about HEIGHT..."
Saria put her ocarina to her lips and played the highest note she could.
Hiro pressed his hands against his ears. "Ow! Geez, what was THAT for?!"
The Forest Sage put her ocarina away. "We shouldn't be standing around here while the dark god continues with his plans." She started walking toward the Lost Woods. "If you guys are ready, and I hope for Hyrule's sake that you are, follow me."
"Great. We go from being led around by one green-haired kid to being led around by a slightly older green-haired kid..." Hiro replied.
If Aylia heard the prince, she did not show it. She walked off after her sister, followed by Mila, Mikon, Kale, and Farrah.
"I swear, I feel like a-Hey!" Hiro shouted as he noticed everyone leaving. "Wait for me!" He ran after the group.
Saria led the fairy, the prince, and the warriors into the Lost Woods. The group wound through the paths as if they were going to the Sacred Forest Meadow, and then stopped just before the shortcut to Zora's Domain.
Hiro looked around. "Is this it? Doesn't look like a swamp to me."
Saria walked to an area of tall grass and brushed some of it inside, revealing an underground passage. "It through here." She looked up at Mila. "Mila, why don't you go first? Its pretty dark in there..."
"Scared of the dark, Saria?" Hiro smirked.
The Forest Sage looked up at the prince. "Well, if you WANT to try to find your way through a maze full of monsters in the dark..."
Hiro glanced at Mila. "Well, what are you waiting for? Get going!"
"Not so brave now, are you?" Mila giggled.
"I'd prefer to see whatever it is that's attacking me," the prince replied.
"Whatever." Mila flew into the underground passage.
Saria walked in after the fairy.
Hiro ran after the Forest Sage. "Hey Saria, don't you think you should let one of us fighters lead?"
"None of you fighters know the way," Saria replied. "Besides, I've been down here before. Its safe as long as you can see what's around you."
"If you say so..." The prince shrugged as he followed the sage. Aylia and Farrah followed Hiro into the passage. Mikon went I after the two girls, nearly getting stuck once before he made it all the way down the steps.
"Even with the fairy girl, its still too dark in here," Hiro complained.
The Forest Warrior looked up at her fairy. "Hey Mila, think you can glow a bit brighter?"
The blue fairy nodded and glowed as bright as she could, illuminating the room. "Better?"
"Much. Thanks." Aylia smiled at Mila.
"I don't see any monsters in here." Hiro started to walk forward.
Suddenly, five mad scrubs popped up out of the ground and started to spit deku nuts at the group.
Mikon pulled Saria and Aylia behind him to shield them from the attack. Kale held his arms out in front of him and used his fins to shield himself. Farrah drew her scimitars and sliced the shots in half as they approached her. Hiro used his shield to deflect the deku nuts.
One of the deku nuts hit a nearby mad scrub. The deku popped all the way out of the ground and started to run off.
Farrah ran after the deku and tackled it, pinning it to the ground. She held one of her scimitars against the monster.
The mad scrub squirmed and looked up at the gerudo timidly. "No! Please don't kill me! I won't attack again, I promise!"
Farrah pressed her scimitar against the monster. "Call off all your buddies and I'll let you go. Otherwise, you're history."
"Yes, ma'am!" The deku turned its gaze toward the other attackers. "Let them pass!"
The mad scrub hesitated for a moment, and then burrowed underground.
The first mad scrub looked back up at Farrah. "There, I did it! Now let me go! Um...please?"
The gerudo sighed and released the monster. "You have ten seconds to get out of my sight."
The mad scrub nodded and dove into a nearby flower.
"That was easy enough," Farrah said with a smirk.
"You sound like you're the one that did all the work," Hiro replied.
The gerudo shrugged. "Well, I AM the one that chased the thing down and made it tell the other monsters to stop attacking..."
"It was my shield that made it jump out of its hiding place," Hiro argued.
Farrah stuck her tongue out at the prince. "All your stupid shield did was bounce its attack back at it."
Saria sighed. "Guys, can we PLEASE continue?"
"Fine..." Hiro and the gerudo sighed.
The Forest Sage led the group through the underground maze. Mila flew a little behind the older kokiri and acted as a torch for the group. After several twists and turns, they came across an underground pond.
"Why did you lead us to a dead end?" Hiro looked down at Saria.
"Its not a dead end," the older kokiri replied. "Just wait a few seconds..."
Just then, Ruto's head and upper body emerged from the pond. "I THOUGHT I heard voices up here!" She looked up at Hiro and the warriors. "THESE are the people that are going to save Hyrule?"
Saria nodded.
"Hmmm..." The Water Sage studied the group. "I guess the goddesses know what they're doing. Stay where you are, I'll be right back!" She dove underwater.
"What's she up to?" Aylia wondered after watching the zora woman dive into the pond.
Kale shrugged. "Who knows?"
Ruto surfaced and tossed four zora tunics of various sizes onto the ground in front of the group. "You'll need these."
"We're going in the water?" Mikon asked.
"Of course, silly!" The Water Sage giggled. "How else are we going to get into the swamp?"
"Gorons can't stand water..." the Mountain Warrior replied.
"You'll be fine as long as you wear that tunic," Ruto assured the goron, "Now hurry it up! I don't like to be kept waiting!" She dove back into the pond.
Saria started to walk away from the group.
"Saria, wait!" Aylia walked after her sister. "Aren't you going to come with us?"
Saria shook her head. "I'm needed elsewhere."
The Forest Warrior looked down. "Oh, I see..."
The older kokiri gave her sister a hug. "Hey, you've survived this long without me. You can make it through this too."
Aylia looked down at the ground. "Yeah..."
Saria smiled at the Forest Warrior. "You'll do great. Don't worry; we'll see each other again soon."
"I know..." Aylia replied.
Saria continued to walk away. "See you soon, all of you."
"Bye Saria!" Hiro and Mikon shouted after the Forest Sage.
"Here goes..." The younger kokiri picked up the smallest tunic and put it on.
"I hope we don't have to stay in the water for too long..." Mikon picked up the largest tunic and slipped it over his head.
"Wimp." Farrah took one of the remaining tunics and slipped it on.
Hiro slipped the remaining tunic over his head. "Give Mikon a break. Its not his fault he's a rock."
"Just like it isn't your fault you have a rock for a brain, right?" The gerudo replied as she waded into the water.
"Very funny." The prince followed Farrah.
Mikon sighed. "I hate water..."
"It won't be so bad." Aylia smiled at the goron and took his hand. "Come on, you'll feel better when its over." She started to lead him into the water.
Mikon walked into the pond with the kokiri girl. "I hope you're right..."
"Aren't you gonna follow them?" Mila asked Kale as they watched the other members of the group walk into the pond.
The zora nodded and followed the goron. Mila flew after the Lake Warrior.
Ruto stood on the bottom of the pond and watched as the heroes swam toward her. "It's about time! Come on!" She swam through a hole in the rock wall behind her.
Hiro looked at the others, and then swam after the Water Sage. Farrah followed the hylian, struggling to keep up. Kale stayed to the rear of the party and helped Mikon and Aylia when they needed it. Mila rode on the kokiri's right shoulder underneath her tunic.
Ruto led the group through the underwater tunnel until she reached a large body of water, and then stopped suddenly, causing the rest of the group to crash into her.
"What was that all about?" Hiro asked as he pushed himself away from the zora princess.
"We're here," Ruto replied. "From here, we just need to swim straight up."
Farrah, being a desert woman and not enjoying her time underwater, swam upward without hesitation. Hiro followed the gerudo. Kale, Aylia, and Ruto swam up with Mikon, who was too heavy to make it to the surface without help.
Farrah was the first to surface. She swam toward the nearest piece of land and looked around. "This place looks like a cross between Kokiri Forest and Lake Hylia."
"Yeah, it kinda does..." Hiro replied as he swam to the piece of land the gerudo was on and pulled himself up next to her.
Ruto, Aylia, Kale, and Mikon surfaced and swam up to Farrah and the prince.
"You guys are on your own from here," the Water Sage said once the entire group was out of the water.
Hiro nodded. "See you later, Ruto."
Ruto nodded and disappeared in a ball of blue light.
Farrah looked around. "Well, where do we start?"
"Do you guys hear something?" the prince asked, his ears twitching.
The gerudo shook her head. "I didn't."
"Me either," Mikon replied.
"Nope," Kale answered.
"I did," Aylia looked to her left. "Sounded like someone's crying..."
Mila flew out of the kokiri's tunic and looked around. "Its that boy over there." She motioned toward a young deku scrub sitting with his back to the group.
"I'm gonna go see what's wrong." Aylia walked toward the deku scrub and put her hand on his shoulder. "Hey..."
The deku scrub jumped, not expecting anyone to talk to him. He turned to the kokiri girl and looked down. "Hi..."
"I heard you crying back there," Aylia said to the deku scrub. "What's wrong?"
"It...it's nothing..." The deku scrub replied quietly.
"It HAS to be something..." The kokiri girl looked the deku scrub in the eyes with a concerned expression on her face. "Please tell me. I wanna help..."
The deku scrub sighed. Should he tell a perfect stranger his troubles? He stared at the kokiri for a moment. She seemed nice enough, and the look on her face showed that she cared about his feelings. Perhaps he should tell...
The deku scrub took a deep breath. "There's this girl I like, but I don't have a chance with her..."
"Why's that?" Aylia asked.
"Because... I'm not likable..." Tears flowed down the deku scrub's cheeks.
"You seem nice enough to me." The kokiri replied, "Who doesn't like you?"
"Daq and all his friends, and they say Ele doesn't like me either..." The deku scrub cried.
Aylia growled mentally. "Daq sounds like a meanie. Just ignore him."
"I try to..." the deku scrub replied. "I hear it so often though... Maybe I really am a loser that will never amount to anything..."
"Don't you DARE think that!" The kokiri shouted. "Where are those jerks? They need to be taught a lesson..."
The deku scrub shook his head. "Please don't..."
Aylia looked at the scrub questioningly.
"I don't like fighting..." The deku scrub said as if replying to a question.
"That right there's a quality most girls like in men." The kokiri smiled at the deku scrub. "What's your name, anyway?"
"Zig," the deku scrub answered.
Aylia took Zig's hand. "Well, come on Zig! Let me introduce you to my friends. Then we can go to wherever it is the rest of your kind live and we'll help you with your problem." She started to walk back to the group.
"I guess..." The deku scrub allowed himself to be dragged toward the group.
Mikon smiled at Zig as he and the kokiri approached. "Hey there!"
"Who's the sapling?" Mila wondered.
"This is Zig," Aylia introduced the deku scrub. "Zig, these are Mila, Mikon, Kale, Farrah, and Prince Hiro." She nodded to each one in turn.
Zig looked up at the heroes. "H-hi..." He turned to the kokiri and whispered in her ear. "You know the prince?"
"Kinda," Aylia answered. "We all met recently. You see, there's this dark god attacking Hyrule. We're looking for one more warrior to join us before we can take him on."
The deku scrub shook his head. "There aren't any warriors around here. The only people that are even relatively good at fighting are the elder and Daq, and the elder's too old..."
"Maybe Daq's the person we need, then," Hiro interrupted Zig's and the kokiri's conversation.
The deku scrub looked down. "Maybe..."
"Whoever it is, we'll have to find them fast," Aylia stated.
Farrah looked down at the kokiri. "What makes you say that?"
Aylia pointed toward a large black mist that was swiftly approaching the group. "That."
"Eep." Mikon stared at the mist.
"Zig, you must lead us to the other deku scrubs," Hiro commanded. "They're in great danger."
Zig nodded and started running in the northern direction. "This way!"
The group followed the deku scrub through the swamp toward an area of dry, flat land dotted with several large flowers.
"This it?" Aylia looked around. The black mist was starting to surround the group.
The deku scrub nodded. "What's going on? Usually, everyone's above ground at this time of day..."
Just then, the ground started to shake.
"We're about to find out!" Hiro drew his sword.
A large snakelike creature that looked to be made out of rock emerged from the ground in front of the group. The creature's body was a dark ray in color and divided into several segments. The first segment had a large, circular mouth lined with razor sharp teeth and the last segment somewhat resembled a fish tail.
"The next master monster?" Aylia looked up at her fairy.
Mila nodded. "The master lanmola. Don't quite know what its doing in a swamp... Make sure you're not over it when it burrows out of the ground."
"Seems easy enough." Hiro charged at the monster, swinging his sword as he approached. The master lanmola saw the charge and smacked the prince out of the way with its tail.
Mikon ran up to the monster and punched it. "Ouch!" He rubbed his hand. "This thing's harder than stone..."
"Its gotta have some kinda weakness..." Aylia thought out loud. "Maybe its tail..." She snuck up to the monster and slashed at its last segment. The master lanmola screeched and brought its tail down on the kokiri, knocking her out.
Farrah ran up to the monster's head and jumped on top of it. She ran across the length of its body and brought her scimitars down on its tail. She jumped out of the way as the master lanmola brought its head down on its tail, damaging itself.
Kale raised his arms, preparing to fire his fins at the master lanmola's face, but the monster grabbed him in his mouth before he could execute his attack.
The gerudo leapt up, grabbed the zora, and pulled him out of the lanmola's mouth before it could burrow back into the ground.
"That was a close one..." Farrah sighed and set Kale down.
The master lanmola rose out of the ground under the two warriors, sending them flying face-first into the water surrounding the piece of land they were standing on.
Mila looked down at Zig, who was watching the fight with a look of fear on his face. "Aren't you going to help?"
"M-m-me?" The deku scrub looked up at the fairy in shock. "I-I can't! I don't know HOW to fight..."
Just then, Mikon flew past the two, landing hard on the ground.
"I think it's about time you learned then," Mila replied. "That thing's gonna destroy everyone here if you don't do something to stop it."
"I...I can't..." Zig replied sadly.
"Okay, just watch while everyone you know and love dies then!" The fairy shouted at the deku scrub.
The master lanmola brought its entire body out of the ground and dove toward a nearby flower.
Zig's eyes widened in horror. 'Ele!' He concentrated. A large purple bubble formed at the end of his mouth and his body began to glow a faint purple color. The deku scrub continued to concentrate, his body glowing brighter and the bubble growing bigger. When the bubble was half his size, he fired it at the monster, which screeched in pain. The deku scrub created another bubble the same size and fired it into the monster's mouth.
The master lanmola charged at Zig, but was stopped when a third bubble hit its tail. It fell to the ground and crawled toward the deku scrub, which fired a fourth bubble into its mouth. The monster screeched one last time and evaporated into a dark purple mist before disappearing.
Zig fell to his knees and heaved a sigh. "Wow..."
Mila smirked at the deku scrub. "And you said you didn't know how to fight..."
"I don't..." Zig replied. "I don't know what came over me..."
"Hey, look at your right arm!" The fairy exclaimed. The deku scrub did so. The Shadow symbol was glowing faintly. "What the heck...?!"
Suddenly, the symbol glowed a bright white, as did the symbols on Aylia, Mikon, Kale, and Farrah. The light and time symbols glowed above Hiro's eyes.
"What's going on?!" Zig exclaimed, almost panicking as the world around him disappeared, being replaced by a white light.
After a few moments, the light died down. The deku scrub took in his surroundings. He was standing on a cloud high above Hyrule Field.
"Do not be afraid, young one," a voice came from behind Zig. The deku scrub spun around. A large owl was hovering in the air a few feet behind him.
"Kaepora?" Mila recognized the owl from just outside the forest and Kakariko.
The owl nodded. "It is good that you were able to gather all of the warriors."
"Unnhhh... Where are we?" Aylia asked as she and the other heroes came to their senses.
"You are in the sky above Hyrule," Kaepora answered. "I have brought you here because there is something that you must know. But first..." The owl disappeared in a flash of white light. He was replaced by an old man of medium height and build. His thick white hair fell to the middle of his back. His mouth was hidden by a thick white mustache that joined with his beard, which stopped at his knees. His eyes were a deep brown in color and seemed to glow with a wisdom and experience that even Zelda could not match. His ears were long and thin and drooped slightly at the ends. His skin was a pale tan color. He wore a long brown robe and a pendant in the shape of the triforce.
"Wow..." Hiro stared at the ex-owl. "Those things the gossip stones said must be true..."
The old man nodded at the prince. "What you see now is my true form. A long time ago, there were three sages that were in charge of protecting the land of Hyrule. These were the Sage of Courage, the Sage of Power, and the Sage of Wisdom. At that time, Hyrule was a small land, and three sages were all that was required to keep the kingdom safe. However, Hyrule's borders increased drastically one day. The land became so large that it was too much for the three ancient sages to handle, so they divided their power between seven worthy hyrulians. The Sage of Courage's power was passed on to the hyrulians that would become the Sage of Forest and the Sage of Spirit. The Sage of Power gave his abilities to the future Sages of Fire and Shadow. The Sage of Wisdom gave his power to the ones that would become the Sage of Water and the Sage of Light. The three sages then pooled what little was left of their power and transferred it into the hyrulian that would become the Sage of Time. The three ancient sages passed away soon after giving the new sages their power. The Sages of Power and Courage immediately ascended into the heavens, but I, the Sage of Wisdom, elected to stay behind, knowing that the future heroes of Hyrule might need guidance." The old man sighed. "That was a long time ago, before Link was born and the current sages gained their powers."
The heroes listened intently, allowing the old man's words to sink in.
"Now, Chosen Ones, you are gathered here because you are the only ones that can defeat the dark god and restore peace to Hyrule. I assume you all have heard the legend:
From dark to light and light to dark
Hyrule's peace will soon depart.
It's up to the chosen of the five locations
To rise and aid in Hyrule's restoration.
From the mountain, forest, swamp, desert, and lake;
The five chosen ones, it is their fate.
Gather them near the royal door.
The Prince shall bring peace to the land once more.
"We have NOW," Farrah replied.
Kaepora nodded. "I have kept the scroll containing that legend safe for many years now. No one, not even Rauru, knew about it until recently. I sensed the time of its fulfillment was near, so I delivered the scroll to the Sage of Light, knowing that he would alert the other sages." He paused for a moment, and then continued. "The battle you are about to fight is going to be tougher than anything Hyrule has yet seen. You will need the help of the sages if you are to win. The symbols that appear on your arms are the same as the sages that will be assisting you during the fight. Aylia has been paired with her sister. Mikon, Darunia will be your helper. Princess Ruto will be helping Kale. Farrah, Nabooru will assist you in the battle. Zig, you have Impa's sage power on your side. Hiro, you have the biggest part in the upcoming fight, so you will have both the Sage of Light and the Sage of Time on your side."
"Sound great!" Aylia smiled. "So, shall we go now?"
The old man shook his head. "The power of the sages will not be enough to stop the dark god. There are seven items you need; the Forest Sword, Fire Hammer, Water Boomerang, Shadow Bracelet, and Spirit Bow which are located inside their respective temples and the Light Lance and Time Shield which are located in the Temple of Time."
"We have to do MORE searching?" Hiro complained.
Kaepora nodded, then turned to the kokiri. "Aylia, the ones who forged the Forest Sword did not think that the Chosen of the Forest would be a child. Your body's current state is not strong enough to wield the sword, so you will have to be aged."
Aylia looked up at the old man. "How?"
"There is an old spell that can rapidly age the body of its target," Kaepora answered.
"You mean I can look as old as Mikon?" The kokiri questioned.
The old man nodded.
A small smile spread across Aylia's lips. "Perfect!"
Kaepora raised an eyebrow at the kokiri. "You do not mind?"
Aylia shook her head. "Go ahead and cast it." She closed her eyes and prepared herself for the spell.
"Very well..." The old man pointed his hands toward the kokiri and mumbled a few words in an ancient hyrulian language. Streams of golden light flowed from his fingertips and spirals around Aylia, completely covering her body. After what seemed like several minutes, Kaepora stopped chanting and lowered his arms. The light faded, revealing the now teenage girl.
Aylia opened her eyes and looked herself over. "It worked..." She spun around, facing the group. "How do I look?"
"Wow..." Mikon stared at the kokiri.
Farrah laughed. "You're drooling, goron boy."
"Huh? Oh, oops. Heh heh..." the goron wiped his mouth.
Mila turned away from Mikon. "Perv!"
Aylia giggled at the goron.
"It is late," Kaepora stated. "The seven of you will rest here tonight. You may search for your weapons in the morning."
"Sounds good to me..." Hiro yawned and lay down on the cloud.
"Me too," Kale replied, laying down as well.
Mila curled up next to the zora. "We have been pretty active today, haven't we?"
"Yeah..." Aylia nodded.
Mikon curled up where he had been standing. The kokiri curled up next to the goron. Zig lay down next to Aylia and the goron.
Farrah walked a short distance away from where she had been standing and lay down with her back facing the group. Pretty soon, everyone had fallen asleep.
