The Chosen Five

Chapter 7 - The Fire Hammer

Written by Blues Wolfox with help and character contributions from SFRusher and Dracos

“Well, here we are.” Aylia stopped in front of two large boulders that blocked the tunnel leading from the Lost Woods to Goron City. The rest of the group stopped behind the kokiri.

Farrah studied the boulders for a moment, and then turned to Mikon. “Well, hop to it!”

“Okay.” The goron placed his hands on one of the boulders and pushed. It refused to budge.

“Now what?” Hiro asked.

Mikon backed up. “You guys might want to move away.”

The rest of the group did as they were told. The goron curled himself into a ball and rolled into the boulders, breaking them apart.

Farrah watched the boulders break apart. “That worked…”

“Yep.” Aylia walked to Mikon. “You okay?”

The goron stood up and shook the chunks of rock off of him. “Of course.”

“Good, let’s go.” Farrah ran ahead of the group toward Goron City.

The kokiri chased after the gerudo. “Wait, let Mikon lead! He knows the way better than any of the rest of us!”

Mikon watched the female warriors run for a moment, then rolled after them.

Kale laughed. “We’d better follow them before we lose them.”

Hiro chuckled. “Yeah…” He, Zig, and the zora ran after the goron.

Farrah stopped as soon as she reached the city. “Whoa…weird place…”

“That’s Mikon’s home you’re talking about,” Aylia said to the gerudo.

Farrah looked down at the kokiri. “So? Look at it! We’re completely surrounded by rocks.”

Mikon came up behind the two warriors. “That’s a bad thing?”

“Of course not,” Aylia spoke up before Farrah could respond.

Just then, Hiro, Kale, and Zig caught up with the group.

The prince looked around the city. “Where to now?”

The goron pointed toward the city’s exit. “Out there, and then up the mountain.”

The deku scrub looked up at Mikon. “We have to climb?”

The goron nodded. “Yep. The temple’s entrance is located near the top of the volcano.”

“You have something against climbing?” Hiro asked the Swamp Warrior.

Zig looked down. “I’m not very good at it…”

Aylia smiled at the deku scrub. “That’s okay. We’ll help you.”

“Yeah, now let’s get going!” The prince ran toward Goron City’s exit. The rest of the group followed the prince out of Goron City. Once outside, he stopped and looked around. “Umm… Which way now?”

“This way.” Mikon began walking toward a small path that sloped upward toward the top of a steep rock wall. Mila and the other warriors followed.

The goron led the group up the path and jumped over the small gap between it and the wall’s top. He then stepped aside so the rest of the group could follow.

Zig looked at the gap nervously. “I don’t think I can do this…”

“Sure you can.” Aylia smiled at the deku scrub. “I’ll jump with you if you like.”

Zig nodded and grabbed the kokiri’s hand. The two jumped over the gap and stood beside Mikon. Mila flew across and hovered next to Aylia.

Hiro stepped back. “Well, ladies first. That means Kale goes next.”

“Hey!” Kale shouted at the prince.

Farrah laughed. “Take it as a compliment, Kale.”

“Hmph!” The zora backed away a few steps, then ran and jumped across the gap, landing gracefully on the other side. The gerudo did the same, landing a few steps ahead of Kale.

The Lake Warrior smirked at Farrah. “Trying to outdo me, are we?”

The gerudo smirked back. “I don’t have to TRY.”

“Right, whatever,” Kale replied.

Mikon looked around at the group. “You’ll want to be careful here. Chunks of rock tend to rain down on this area.”

Hiro rolled his eyes. “NOW he tells us…”

Farrah shrugged. “Takes more than a few stupid rocks to stop me.”

“Yeah, same here!” The prince spoke up.

The gerudo laughed at the prince.

Hiro glanced at Farrah. “What’s so funny?”

The Desert Warrior shook her head. “Nothing.”

The prince rolled his eyes. “Riiiiiiight…”

Farrah ignored Hiro and started across the path, dodging the boulders that fell toward and around her. Mikon, Kale, and Zig followed. Aylia and Hiro held their shields over their heads and ran after the group. Mila flew around Aylia, making sure to stay under the shield at all times.

Farrah was the first to reach the end of the path. She looked up toward the top of the cliff in front of her. “Looks like we’re near the top.”

“Yep.” Mikon started to climb the steep cliff wall. Farrah, Hiro, and Aylia followed. Mila flew to the top and waited for the warriors.

Zig stared up at the wall nervously.

Kale looked down at the deku scrub. “Don’t think you can make it?”

Zig shook his head.

The zora knelt down, facing away from the Swamp Warrior. “Here, climb on.”

Zig looked at Kale. “Are you sure you want to carry me all the way up there?”

The zora nodded.

The deku scrub climbed onto the Lake Warriors back. “Thanks.”

“No problem.” Kale stood up and started climbing after the other warriors.

Farrah was the first of the warriors to reach the top. She stood on the cliff edge, looked down at the rest of the group, and smirked. “Hurry it up, slackers!”

“We COULD, or we could climb extra slow to keep you waiting.” Hiro smirked back.

“Do that and I’ll have to go back down there and kick your butt,” the gerudo replied.

The prince looked up at Farrah. “You’re really bold, you know that? Not everyone will threaten a prince.”

The gerudo shrugged. “Princes are pathetic.”

Hiro growled and continued climbing.

Mikon was next to reach the top. He pulled himself onto the cliff edge, grabbed Aylia’s arm as she reached the top, and pulled her up.

“We’re all waiting on you, water boy!” Farrah shouted down at Kale, who was a little more than halfway up the cliff wall.

“Give him a break,” Mila said to the gerudo. “Zoras aren’t exactly built for climbing.”

“Feh.” Farrah snorted. “They can climb just as good as anyone else.”

After a short while, Kale reached the top of the cliff. Mikon pulled Zig off the zora’s back and set him gently on the ground.

Kale pulled himself onto the cliff, stood up, and looked at the two tunnels ahead. “So… Where’s the temple?”

“Through here.” Mikon started toward the tunnel on the right. The rest of the group followed.

“Man, it’s hot in here!” the zora exclaimed as he entered the crater.

“No kidding…” Aylia wiped the sweat off her forehead.

Farrah rolled her eyes. “Wimps.”

“I think I’ll just wait for you all out here…” Zig backed out of the crater.

The kokiri looked back at the deku scrub. “You sure?”

Zig nodded. “My kind can’t survive in such an environment...”

“We’ll be back as soon as possible,” Aylia assured the deku scrub.

“I think I’ll stay out here too,” Kale replied. “The heat’s drying my scales…”

Mikon looked around at the group. “Anyone coming with me?”

“I am!” the kokiri responded immediately.

“Heat doesn’t bother me,” Farrah replied.

Hiro just nodded.

Mikon led the small group into the crater and across the bridge leading toward the Fire Temple’s entrance. The group entered the temple and looked around.

“Wow, it’s not as hot in here.” Aylia stated.

Hiro nodded. “Yeah. You’d think the fire temple would be hotter than the surrounding area.”

Farrah looked at the prince. “Hotter than standing over a pit of molten rock? How’s THAT possible?”

Hiro just shrugged.

The gerudo looked around. “I wonder where the weapon is in this temple…”

“It looks nothing like the Forest Temple, so I have no idea,” Aylia replied.

“I guess we’ll have to wander around until we find it,” the prince responded.

“Yep.” Mikon walked to the back wall of the temple and through the door on his left. The rest of the group followed.

“Whoa…” Hiro looked around at all the platforms floating on top of the molten rock. “You wouldn’t want to misstep here…”

The goron shrugged. “A little lava never hurt anyone.”

The rest of the group looked at Mikon as if he had lost his mind.

“You’re joking, right?” Farrah asked.

The goron shook his head.

“Maybe it doesn’t hurt your kind, but it kills hylians…” Hiro replied.

“Yeah, same with kokiri,” Aylia added.

“Weird…” Mikon replied.

“You’re the weird one, Rock Boy,” the prince responded.

“For once, Hiro, I agree with you,” Farrah replied.

“If you think about it, we’re all weird,” Aylia stated.

Hiro looked down at the kokiri. “How do you figure that?”

“My race stays young forever, Mikon’s isn’t hurt by lava, Farrah’s generally has no respect for men—” Aylia started.

“And why should we?” the gerudo interrupted. “They’re all pigs!”

“Heeey…” Mikon glanced at Farrah. Hiro growled.

The kokiri cleared her throat and continued. “Mila’s are really small and can fly, Kale’s live in the water, Zig’s seem to be made out of wood, and Hiro’s can live almost anywhere and hear the voices of the goddesses.”

The prince chuckled. “Yeah, we’re special.”

The gerudo rolled her eyes. “Whatever.”

The goron jumped off the platform the group was on and landed on the platform ahead. He then turned to face everyone. “Coming? Or would you rather not risk it?”

Aylia jumped across the gap between the platforms, landing next to Mikon. Hiro did the same. Mila flew across and hovered around Aylia. Farrah leapt onto the platform the other warriors were standing on, landing a short distance ahead of the prince.

Hiro stuck his tongue out at the gerudo. “Show off.”

Farrah smirked. “Not my fault you can’t jump as far.”

Aylia stood between the prince and the gerudo. “Hey you two, no fighting!”

“Yeah, we have to find my weapon!” Mikon joined in.

“Why bother?” Mila asked the kokiri and the goron. “They’ll only get along until the next opportunity to poke fun at each other comes up.”

Aylia thought for a moment. “Good point…”

Mikon led the group across the platforms to the other side of the room. He opened the door and stepped back. Hiro started to walk through the door but the goron pulled him aside.

The prince glared at Mikon. “Hey, what gives?!”

The goron smiled at Aylia, Farrah, and Mila. “Ladies first.”

Farrah walked through the door, followed by Aylia and Mila.

Hiro looked at Mikon. “You’re doing this just to annoy me, aren’t you?”

“No,” the goron replied.

“Mind letting me go then?” the prince struggled to free himself from the goron’s grip.

“Sure.” Mikon let go of Hiro and followed the female warriors through the door.

The prince followed the goron through the door and looked around at the room he was in.

“What’s with all the holes in the ground?” Aylia asked.

“This room used to hold Volvagia,” Mikon answered.

“The dragon creature?” Hiro asked.

The goron nodded, shivering a bit. “It liked to eat gorons. My kind were almost fed to it…”

“Link told me about that,” the prince replied. “He had to go free everyone before fighting the monster.”

“Well, it’s dead now anyway,” Aylia spoke up.

Just then, pillars of lava shot up out of all the holes in the ground.

Farrah jumped back as one of the pillars shot up right in front of her. “What the heck?!”

The pillars of lava shot toward Mikon and enveloped him.

“MIKON!!!” Aylia started toward the goron.

“Aylia, no!” Farrah grabbed the kokiri before she could reach Mikon.

Aylia struggled. “Let me go! He needs help!”

“He’ll be fine,” the gerudo assured the Forest Warrior. “He said earlier that lava didn’t hurt him, remember?”

“That’s not like any lava I’ve seen or read about,” Hiro responded.

“Same,” the gerudo replied.

The prince looked at Farrah. “You can read?”

The gerudo glared at Hiro. “Of COURSE I can read! Who CAN’T?”

“Enough, you two!” Mila shouted at Farrah and the prince.

“He’s gone…”

Everyone turned to look at Aylia, who was staring at the lava.

“What do you mean he’s gone?” Mila asked the kokiri.

Aylia pointed toward the lava pillars. “Look.”

The rest of the group looked at the lava, which was slowly retreating back to into the holes from which it came. The goron was nowhere to be seen.

“Where’d he go?” Farrah wondered as she stared at the space Mikon had been standing in.

“I think I know…” The kokiri responded worriedly.

‘Where am I?’ Mikon looked around. Last he knew, he had been in what used to be Volvagia’s lair with Aylia, Mila, Farrah, and Hiro. Now he was in a pitch-black room. ‘Who turned off the lights?’

Just then, a red sphere of light floated past the goron, stopping a short distance in front of him.

Mikon looked at the light and blinked. ‘Am I seeing things?’

The light then darted to the left and disappeared.

“Hey, wait!” The goron rolled around the corner after the light, only to see it fly to the right and disappear. Mikon followed the light as it traveled through the dark room, eventually coming up to a doorway covered by a faint red light, similar to the one Aylia had run across in the Forest Temple. The red sphere of light floated through the doorway and disappeared.

The goron approached the doorway. “What’s this?”

The light covering the doorway expanded suddenly, completely engulfing the Mountain Warrior. Mikon yelled as the light disappeared, taking him with it.

“Get up, Mikon.”

The Mountain Warrior sat up with a groan and looked around. He was in what looked to be a maze made out of rock and lava. Darunia was standing to his right, looking down at him.

The Fire Sage grinned. “Good, you’re awake.”

Mikon rose to his feet. “Where are we?”

Darunia curled himself into a ball. “You’ll see. Follow me.” He started rolling along one of the maze’s many paths.

The Mountain Warrior curled himself into a ball and followed. “Where we goin’?”

“You’ll find out soon,” the Fire Sage replied as they rolled.

The two gorons rolled along the various paths until they came to the maze’s center. A giant red hammer with a red and brown handle floated five feet above a small stone platform.

Mikon stared at the weapon. “Is that what I think it is?”

Darunia nodded. “Sure is.”

“Wow…” The Mountain Warrior stepped up to the platform and took the hammer. He examined the weapon and then swung it a couple times.

Just then, a red light appeared in front of the goron. The light took on a goron shape, and then died down, revealing an exact copy of the Mountain Warrior.

Mikon jumped back. “Whoa!”

Without warning, the copy slammed his hammer against the real Mountain Warrior’s head and rolled away.

“Ouch!” Mikon grabbed his head. “What was that about?!” Then he noticed his copy rolling away. “Hey! Grrr…” The Mountain Warrior rolled after his attacker.

The copy of Mikon led the original through the maze and into a room filled with lava. He faced the Mountain warrior and waited for him to catch up.

Mikon entered the lava room and rolled into his opponent, knocking him back a couple feet. The Mountain Warrior raised his hammer and brought it down hard on his copy. The copy rolled out of the way and into a tunnel.

“Get back here!” Mikon ran into the tunnel after his opponent…

…And yelled in surprise as the ground collapsed under the two gorons’ wait, causing them to fall into a large rock-filled room.

“Ouch…” Mikon stood and rubbed his back. The Mountain Warrior looked around. ‘Where is he?!’ He glanced at all the rocks, and then noticed one was shaped like a goron. Mikon ran up to the rock and smashed it. The rock vanished in a cloud of red dust. ‘Well, I guess that takes care of him.’

The goron was suddenly thrown to the ground as a large red beam hit him from the side. His copy jumped on top of a large rock and fired another red beam at the Mountain Warrior.

Mikon rolled forward to evade the beam, then rolled into the rock, shattering it and knocking his copy to the ground.

The copy rolled away and fired several red beams at the Mountain Warrior, hitting him in various places.

Mikon rolled behind a large rock to avoid more of the magic beams. “Man, this is nasty…”

“Having a bit of trouble, are we?”

The Mountain Warrior looked back toward the source of the voice. Darunia smiled at the goron and walked over to him.

“How am I supposed to defeat this guy if he keeps throwing those beams at me?” Mikon asked.

The Fire Sage winked at his companion. “Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire.”

The Mountain Warrior gave Darunia a confused look. “How? There’s no fire here to fight with.”

The Fire Sage shook his head. “No, I mean you have to turn his attack against him.”

“Ah…” Mikon thought for a moment. “How do I do that?”

Darunia motioned toward the fire hammer. “Use your weapon.”

“Oh! Okay!” the mountain warrior nodded, understanding. He jumped over the boulder and landed in front of it, facing his copy. “Come on! Hit me with your best shot!”

The copy growled and sent a large red magic beam toward Mikon. The mountain warrior swung his hammer at the beam, sending it back toward his opponent. The beam hit the copy’s right shoulder, hurting it, but not destroying it.

Mikon blinked at his opponent. “That didn’t work… Now what?”

The Mountain Warrior’s copy glared and fired several more magic beams at the goron, hitting him before he had a chance to dodge.

Darunia stared in horror at the scene, wanting to help but completely frozen in his tracks. Then, he noticed a faint red glow surrounding Mikon. “What the heck?!”

The Mountain Warrior walked toward his copy, seemingly unhurt by the beams that had been fired at him. The glow around him grew brighter with each step. “You really shouldn’t have done that…” The goron raised his hammer and brought it down hard on the chest of his copy, destroying it. He watched as the copy’s remains evaporated into a red mist and disappeared.

Darunia watched as Mikon delivered the final blow to his opponent, and then approached the goron. “That was quite a battle. Are you all right?”

The Mountain Warrior nodded. “I’m fine. What was that all about?”

“I’m not entirely sure,” the Fire Sage replied. “According to Saria, your kokiri friend went through a similar battle in the Forest Temple.”

“THAT’S why she disappeared for so long…” Mikon thought out loud.

Darunia nodded. “The other warriors are waiting for you to return.”

The Mountain Warrior looked around. “How do I get back to them?”

“I’ll take you where they are. Hold on.” The Fire Sage closed his eyes and concentrated. He and Mikon transformed into balls of red light and disappeared.

“I wonder what’s taking Mountain Boy so long,” Farrah said to her companions as they waited for Mikon to return.

Aylia kept her gaze fixed on the place the Mountain Warrior had been standing before he disappeared. “I hope he’s okay…”

“I’m sure he is,” Hiro responded. “When you disappeared on us, you came back just fine.”

“I know, but still…” The kokiri sighed.

Farrah smirked. “Men do tend to be weaklings.”

“Mikon is NOT weak!” Aylia shouted at the gerudo. “He’s probably the farthest thing from weak!”

Farrah laughed. “You shouldn’t get so defensive about him. It makes it more fun to tease you.”

The kokiri stuck her tongue out at the Desert Warrior. “You’re mean.”

“Yep,” Farrah replied.

Just then, two red glowing spheres shot up out of one of the holes in the ground. One of the spheres flew off as the other grew and faded, revealing the Mountain Warrior.

“Mikon!” Aylia ran up to the goron and gave him a hug.

Mikon hugged the kokiri back and picked her up. “Hey, miss me?”

Aylia grinned. “Of course.”

The goron smiled. “I missed you too.”

Farrah rolled her eyes. “Come on, you two. We need to get back to Kale and Zig.”

Mikon nodded and lowered Aylia to the ground. He then proceeded to lead the group out of the temple.

Kale and Zig sat just outside the entrance to the Death Mountain Crater, waiting patiently for the rest of their group to arrive. The zora stared off in the direction of Lake Hylia while the deku scrub kept his gaze lowered to his feet.

Kale glanced at his companion. “Something wrong?”

Zig shook his head. “Not really…”

The zora arched an eyebrow, or would if he had any. “You look like something’s bothering you.”

The Swamp Warrior sighed. “I’m worried…”

Kale nodded, understanding. “You’ll be fine. The goddesses wouldn’t have chosen us to save Hyrule if they thought we couldn’t handle it.”

Zig shook his head. “It’s not me I’m worried about…”

The zora looked at the deku scrub. “Your family then?”

Zig nodded.

“I’m sure they’ll be fine once we defeat the dark god,” Kale assured his companion.

The deku scrub sighed. “I hope so…”

Just then, Mikon, Aylia, Mila, Farrah, and Hiro exited the crater and approached the two.

The Chosen of the Lake stood and faced the group. “It’s about time you got back!”

“Well excuuuuuuuse us!” Hiro stuck his tongue out at the zora.

Farrah rolled her eyes.

“We’ve got four more temples to visit,” Kale informed the group. “The Water, Spirit, Shadow, and Light Temples.”

Hiro nodded. “The Shadow Temple is in the graveyard behind Kakariko. That’s the closest, but if we take the Lost Woods shortcut, we’ll be able to reach the Water Temple before too long.”

“Which do we visit first?” Mila asked.

Kale shrugged. “Doesn’t matter to me.”

“Zig?” Aylia looked at the deku scrub.

Zig glanced at the ground. “The Water Temple’s fine with me. I’m in no hurry to get my weapon.”

“Sure?” Mikon asked. The Chosen of the Swamp nodded.

“Let’s get going then,” Hiro commanded. “The sun is beginning to set.”

The rest of the group nodded. Mikon led the party down the mountain toward Goron City and the Lost Woods shortcut.
