Author's Note: Loosely based on both the show and games (Well, the Genesis games and SA2 anyways. Those are all Ive played). I kinda combined both worlds (Earth and Mobius). This takes place on Earth, but far from where Sonic and Co reside. Anyway, enjoy the story. ^_^
Somewhere in space floats a planet called Earth. It may have the same name as out Earth, but this planet is very different. It is populated by all kinds of creatures; from humans to furries to feral animals. King Acorn once ruled Earth. Under his reign, all the earthlings lived in peace.
Then... Everything changed...
An evil man named Dr. Ivo Robotnik took control of Earth and changed everyone he could capture, including the King, into his robot slaves. He then set about changing the beautiful and peaceful land into a metropolis, destroying all creatures and plant life that got in the way of his buildings and robots.
The Earths inhabitants didn't just sit back and take what Robotnik did to them. A small band of freedom fighters, led by Princess Sally Acorn, constantly confronted Robotnik and attempted to put a stop to the destruction of their planet. This group included the famous hedgehog Sonic and Tails the two-tailed fox.
The heroic deeds of Sally, Sonic, Tails, and the rest of the Knothole freedom fighters are well known, but what about the other groups that rose up against Dr. Robotnik and his followers? Surely you don't believe that only a few souls were brave enough to take a stand against the evil doctor? Many earthlings fought to free their roboticized friends and bring peace back to their planet. This story focuses on a group of freedom fighters far away from Knothole. More specifically, it focuses on a young furre that helped organize the group and make it what it is today. This is Stryke Wolfox's story.
In a remote island on Earth, known to most as the Dator Island, there was a small village in the midst of a thick forest. This village, called Cana, had two parts; one was on the ground. This part contained most of the homes, the shops, and the school. The other part was on the treetops. This was where the village leader, the warriors, and the training ground for the warriors were located. This village wasn't the primitive straw hut and tribal mask village one usually thinks of. No, this village had the same technology as the rest of the Earth. The buildings were made out of metal. The larger ones, such as the leaders' home, had moving platforms that carried people up or down the different floors in the building. More moving platforms were scattered outside in various places. These carried people that couldn't climb the tall trees to the higher or lower level of the village. The villagers got around on foot. They did not have cars or any other large vehicles; the distance between the opposite sides of the village weren't far enough away from each other for the village's inhabitants to need them.
A short distance away from this village was a section of forest surrounded by a dome-shaped invisible shield, much like the shields Sonic used. This was the training area. It was shielded to keep any stray blasts from flying into the city. The village warriors could often be found here, improving their skills as much as they could in case they would one day need those skills.
Stryke Wolfox looked every bit like the warrior she was. She was the daughter of a female saber tooth wolf and a male red fox, both of whom had also been warriors. Stryke had the general build of a vixen, as well as the markings. However, where vixens were normally orange, Stryke was silvery gray. She had also inherited her mother's long, sharp fangs. Her hair was short and cerulean in color. It was always messed up due to her training constantly. Her eyes were the same blue color as her hair, and they seemed to glow whenever she was angry or anticipating something. She had herself partially roboticized, as many warriors did. Her hands, feet, and arms and legs below her elbows and kneecaps were metal. Her robotic hands and feet were equipped with long, sharp claws that she used for climbing as well as fighting. Stryke's metal parts were a silvery white in color, and looked as if she was wearing armor on her arms and legs. She wore a purple triangle-shaped cloth that protected her shoulders, chest, and upper back. This cloth was mixed with metal and served as a lightweight armor. Underneath the armor was a sleeveless shirt of the same color that showed one inch of her stomach. She also wore a skirt that went down to her upper thighs at the sides and sloped down to form a triangle shape in the front and back. She wore shorts made out of the same cloth/metal mix as the armor on her shoulders, upper back, and chest underneath the skirt. These were the same color as the rest of her outfit. She didn't wear shoes or gloves of any kind, as her claws would most likely destroy them.
Across from her was a female jackal with tan-yellow fur, medium brown eyes, and long, thick, jet-black hair with silver highlights. Her tail was the same color as most of her other fur on the underside, but black and silver on the top and tip. Her clothing was similar to Stryke's, but red and with a shorter shirt and tight-fitting boots that reached the joints in the back and the start of her thighs in the front. She wore a thick gold bracelet on her right wrist and had a red bandana tied around her left elbow with the knot on the inside of her elbow. On her head was a gold helmet that started with a small strip between the eyes and went behind the ears and around the lower halves of the sides of her face. A long double-edged sword rested in its sheath on the jackal's belt, under her left arm. A small silver shield with a medium-sized ruby in the center was strapped to her back. Unlike Stryke, she had no metal parts, just her weapons and armor.
The jackal smirked at her opponent. "Ready to begin?"
Stryke nodded. "Whenever you are, Anna."
The jackal unsheathed her sword and brought her shield in front of her. "Fine then, I'll let you have the first attack this time."
The wolf/fox leapt at the jackal, the claws on her fingers extended. Anna thrust her shield out in front of her as the hybrid approached. Stryke's claws dented the shield.
"You're getting faster," The wolf/fox commented after pulling her claws free from the shield.
The jackal grinned. "I hope for your sake that you have as well!" She unsheathed her sword and swung at the Stryke, who jumped to the side.
"Of course," the hybrid smirked. "Not everyone is as lazy as you are!" The cyborg kicked the side of Anna's right leg, knocking her down. Stryke jumped up over the jackal. Anna rolled out of the way as the wolf/fox landed, claw tips first, on the tree's highest branch. The hybrid's sharp claws sliced through the branch.
Stryke jumped off the branch as it fell, dug her claws into a nearby tree trunk, and climbed back to the top.
The jackal smirked. "Not everyone needs to train as much you do. Where did you learn that move? A suicide class?"
"Heh... Just be glad I wasn't aiming to kill." The wolf/fox said after she had climbed back onto the treetops.
"As if you COULD!" Anna held her shield out in front of her. The ruby in the shield's center started to glow. Small red sphere-shaped blasts flew toward the canine hybrid from the ruby.
Stryke dodged most of the blasts, but one managed to hit her left arm. The cyborg yelped - mostly in surprise - and held her arm.
"Had enough?" The jackal walked toward the wolf/fox.
"You wish..." Stryke grinned. She held her right arm out in front of her, palm facing down. Her hand was balled into a fist. A small panel opened up on top of her arm, close to her wrist. Three purple lasers were shot out of the panel at Anna.
The jackal's eyes grew wide in surprise as the lasers came at her. She was barely able to duck out of the way before they hit.
Anna charged at the canine mix, sword raised. When she was close enough, she swung downward at the hybrid.
"I don't think so!" Stryke blocked the blade with her claws. The jackal swung again, but was blocked again. The two canines continued swinging and blocking until a bright flash and a 'whoosh' sound, signs that someone had entered the training area, caught their attention.
A female border collie that looked to be around twelve years of age walked up to the two fighters. The collie had short black hair and soft brown eyes that hid behind blue-framed glasses. She wore a long blue skirt, black shoes with white socks, and a white blouse.
"Sorry to interrupt..." The collie slowly approached Stryke and Anna. "Anna, someone called for you. They're waiting for you if you want to talk to them."
"Thanks, Mari." The jackal sheathed her sword and strapped her shield to her back. "I guess that's enough training for the day, See you tomorrow, Stryke." She walked out of the dome, followed by the border collie.
"Don't slack off too much!" The wolf/fox shouted after Anna. She watched the jackal and the border collie leave, then walked out of the training area, climbed halfway down one of the trees, and jumped two the next tree. Once close enough, she dug her claws into the tree's trunk, climbed to the other side of the trunk, and jumped into the next tree. She continued doing this until she came upon a series of hovering platforms. Stryke jumped across these platforms, which took her down to the lower part of Cana village.
"Hey, Stryke!" A middle-aged male coyote with short gray-brown hair, fur that was slightly more gray than his hair, green eyes, and a robotic chest, left ear, left eye, muzzle, and arms ran toward Stryke as the jumped off the last platform and onto the ground. The coyote wore a loose-fitting green shirt with no sleeves and baggy black pants that stopped a couple inches above the ankles. The ends of the pant legs were tattered, as if they had been torn off.
"Don! Hey!" The hybrid smiled at the coyote as he approached. "Long time no see! How have you been?"
"Couldn't be better." Don smiled at Stryke. "Yourself?"
"I'm fine." The cyborg looked up at the coyote. "Where have you been all this time?"
"Chiro city," Don answered.
"Ah. Visiting your daughter, I take it?" Stryke asked. The coyote nodded. "So, how is she doing?"
"She's doing all right." Don smiled. "And so is her son."
"She had the baby already?!" The wolf/fox gave her friend a surprised look. "Wow, time flies by fast. Seems like yesterday Terra was married, and now she's a mother..."
The coyote chuckled. "If you think time goes by fast now, just wait until you get as old as me." He smiled. "Terra and her family are at my house right now if you want to visit them."
Stryke shook her head. "Maybe tomorrow. I promised my dad I'd be home before it got too dark."
"Oh, I see..." Don looked at the canine mix. "Well, you're welcome to come visit any time!"
Stryke smiled. "Thanks. I'll drop by soon!"
The coyote just smiled and walked away. The wolf/fox dug her claws into a nearby tree and climbed to the top. Once she was at the top level of the village, she ran to a large building and stepped inside.
"You're home late." A tall male fox with orange-red fur and similar-colored hair approached Stryke. "Been training again, have you?"
The hybrid nodded. "Yes, father."
The fox smiled. "That's how many times this week? Five?"
"Six." Stryke corrected.
Stryke's father chuckled. "I hope you're planning on taking it easy for a day or so."
The wolf/fox hybrid shrugged. "We'll see."
The fox looked at his daughter. "Rest is just as important as training. You can't get stronger if you don't give your muscles time to heal."
"Maybe..." Stryke replied. She let out a yawn. "I'm gonna take a quick nap. Talk to you later, father." She started to walk away.
"Don't sleep too late, or you won't be able to get any rest during the night!" Stryke's father called after her.
"Don't worry, I won't." the wolf/fox continued to walk toward her room.
Meanwhile...
Anna made her way through the castle to a large room filled with consoles and monitors. She made her way across the room to one of the consoles, picked up the receiver at its side, and spoke into it. "Hello?"
"Hello Anna. It's been ages..." A familiar face appeared on the screen. A male black Australian kelpie whose left half was robotic smiled at the jackal. His long navy blue hair blew around behind him, as if it was being hit by wind. His eyes were bright gold in color. The eye on his robotic side was a glowing triangle that started at the nose. The top side of the triangle sloped upward at a forty-five degree angle as it drew closer to the side of his face. Nothing below his neck could be seen on the monitor.
"Shade!" Anna exclaimed as she recognized the kelpie. "It has been a long time, hasn't it? I've missed you so much!"
Shade nodded. "I've missed you too Anna."
"Where have you been all this time?" The jackal questioned the kelpie.
"Various places," Shade answered. "You'd be surprised at what you can find outside Dator Island."
Anna looked down. "I wish I could have gone with you..."
The kelpie looked at the jackal. "I think I know of a way for you to join me, if you're interested."
Anna's face lit up. "Really?! How?"
Shade smiled. "Meet me in the training area later tonight, bottom level. We'll talk there."
The jackal nodded. "I'll be there."
"Good." The kelpie smiled again. "I'll see you soon, my love." With that, the screen went blank.
Anna smiled as she hung up the receiver. 'It'll be so good to be with Shade again,' she thought to herself. 'I wonder what he has in mind...'
Later...
Stryke made her way through the long hall the led to her bedroom. It was late at night and she was usually asleep by now, but the nap she took earlier had kept her from being tired until recently.
As the hybrid approached the door to her room, she noticed a familiar figure walking toward her. She stopped and smiled at the figure. "Anna! Hey! Who was it that called?"
Anna jumped at the sudden noise, and then relaxed when she saw Stryke. "Oh, no one," Anna replied. She didn't like to lie to her friends, but she didn't want to discuss her conversation with Shade.
The hybrid looked at her friend. "Mari wouldn't have interrupted our battle if it was 'no one'."
The jackal looked down. "It was just an old friend..."
Stryke shrugged. "Well, see you tomorrow. I need to get to bed so I can wake up in time for training tomorrow morning."
Anna nodded as the cyborg walked past her toward the door that led to the inside of the tower. "See you." She smiled to herself. 'Most of the warriors are either in bed or heading there. I guess now is a better time than ever...' she thought as she headed to the back of the castle and out the door.
Shade leaned against one of the many trees in the training dome, waiting for Anna to show up. The sky was already dark - though the canopy of the trees was so thick that it was hard to tell while on the ground - and the jackal still hadn't showed up. The kelpie was starting to get impatient.
Suddenly, Shade heard footsteps in the distance. He watched as Anna slowly approached him.
The kelpie half-smiled at the jackal. "What took you so long?"
"I had to make sure no one saw me," Anna replied. "Not many of the warriors trust you..."
"Really?" Shade looked at the jackal. "Why not?"
Anna shrugged. "That's not really important right now, anyway." She smiled at the kelpie. "So...What's your plan?"
"This." Shade reached behind the jackal and slammed his hand against the back of her head, knocking her out. The kelpie caught Anna as she fell and carried her off into the night.
"Sorry, love." Shade looked down at the jackal as he ran. "But if I'm to carry out my mission, then I need you to be away from here..."
Stryke tossed and turned in her bed. She had spent the last two hours trying to get to sleep, but she felt troubled by something. She wasn't sure what, but she sensed there was something wrong.
Suddenly, the wolf/fox hybrid heard a loud noise from outside. She rushed out of her room and up the stairs of the tower. Stryke gaped in shock at what she saw. Several robots of various shapes and sizes were making their way toward the village, destroying everything in their path.
'What's going on?!' The hybrid thought to herself. She opened the window in her room, climbed down the side of the building, and ran toward the machines.
"Oh look, someone wants to play." One of the flying robots that slightly resembled a wasp chuckled.
Stryke stopped a few feet ahead of the robots. "I don't know what you think you're doing, but you're not allowed past here!"
The wasp bot that spoke before laughed. "Who's gonna stop us? You?"
The canine mix jumped at the robot that spoke and slashed at it with her claws, ripping through the metal. The machine fell to the ground in pieces. A small feral squirrel crawled out of the remains of the machine and scurried down one of the tree trunks. Stryke looked at all the other robots. "Still wanna proceed? If you turn back I won't cause any more damage."
The cyborg was rewarded with a series of laser beams fired at her. She dodged the beams and sighed. "Your choice..." The wolf/fox leaped onto the nearest robot, a SWATbot, then jumped away as a cannon blast collided with the SWATbot, destroying it.
"Stryke!" A female german shepherd who appeared to be in her mid-twenties ran toward the hybrid. Her outfit was similar to Stryke's, but was black instead of purple. Behind her were several other canines of various breeds with similar outfits.
"Keesha!" The cyborg looked back at the german shepherd in surprise.
Keesha smiled at Stryke. "What? You didn't honestly think we'd make you fight these things alone, did you?"
The wolf/fox smiled back at the other warrior. "Let's run these guys off!"
The fight between the canines and the robots resumed. The robots fired lasers at the canine warriors, who dodged and counter-attacked. Some used guns, a few used swords, and others used no weapons and attacked by punching, scratching, or biting. After what seemed like hours, a large ship approached the fight and shot a fire beam at the tree tops the warriors and robots were fighting on.
The pilot of the ship chuckled. "Let's see how willing you are to put your lives on the line for a pile of ashes!"
'I know that voice...' Stryke thought to herself. Anger surged through her once she realized whom it was. "Shade! What's HE doing here?!"
"Stryke!!!"
Keesha's shout brought the wolf/fox's attention to the fire, which was spreading rapidly. Stryke's eyes widened with horror. She turned to the other warriors. "Quick! Get everyone out of the village!"
Some of the other warriors stopped fighting and ran back toward the village. The canine mix was about to do the same when a blast from one of the flying machines shot through the branches that had been supporting her, sending the wolf/fox hybrid falling through the canopy. Stryke dug her claws into the tree trunk closest to her to slow down her fall. She stopped three fourths of the way down.
'Well, at least I can try to get the villagers down here to safety...' The wolf/fox thought to herself as she climbed the rest of the way down the tree. She ran as fast as she could toward the village.
Stryke gasped in horror as she arrived at the village. Branches, destroyed machines, and a few bodies were scattered all over the ground. All the buildings were either badly damaged or completely destroyed. The trees were charred black from the fighting that had apparently gone on while she was busy fighting the machines on the upper level. Nothing short of the trees was left standing.
"Stryke..." A weak voice called to the wolf/fox.
Stryke looked down at the beaten body in front of her. "Don!!" She crouched near his head and wrapped an arm around him. "Come on, we gotta get outta here before this whole village goes up in flames!"
Don tried his best to push the hybrid away, but his movements were labored. "No. If you try to save me, you'll never make it in time..."
Stryke looked at her friend. "I gotta do SOMETHING!"
Don looked back at the hybrid. "I don't have much time left even if I were to escape. There may be other survivors. Help them."
"I can't just leave you here," Stryke replied.
"Go! NOW!" Smoke rose out of the coyotes metallic parts as they began to glow.
The wolf/foxs eyes widened in horror as she realized what the coyote was doing. "Don, no!!"
It was too late. A medium-sized explosion sent bits and pieces of the now-deceased canine in all directions.
"Don, you idiot! Why'd you do that?!" Stryke yelled, her voice filled with anger and sorrow. She wanted to sit and cry, but she had a mission. She needed to get anyone she could out of the village before it burned down.
Suddenly, a large burning branch fell to the ground next to where the wolf/fox was standing. She jumped back, startled.
'I gotta move if I wanna get anyone outta here in time!' Stryke thought to herself. She jumped over the branch and ran to the nearest building: Don's house.
The canine mix entered the building, which was half destroyed, and looked around. "Hello?! Anyone in here?"
Stryke heard a faint crying sound coming from the end of the hall to her right. She made her way across the rubble filled ground until she came to a large pile of debris. The hybrid looked around. The crying was louder but its source was nowhere to be seen.
'Must be under all this...' Stryke thought to herself. She dug through the pile of rubble, being extra careful not to cut anyone that might be under it with her claws.
When the canine mix had cleared around half of the debris, she noticed a patch of gray-brown fur. She quickly removed the rubble around the fur until she revealed the bodies of two female coyotes.
Stryke felt the coyotes' wrists for a pulse. She found none. The wolf/fox bowed her head.
Stryke noticed the crying sounded louder. The wolf/fox looked around. 'It's coming from under Terra..' She gently moved the younger coyotes body aside. A baby coyote with red eyes, brown fur, black wings, large black bat ears, and black paws lay under where his mother's arms were. The baby stopped crying and looked up at the canine mix.
"You poor thing..." Stryke picked the infant up. "I've got to get you out of here..." She exited the house and continued her search around the village. The cyborg found a few more dead bodies, but no survivors.
"I hope some people managed to escape before I got here..." Stryke sighed. She looked at the baby in her arms. "Well, come on. We gotta get outta here before this place burns down completely!"
"Where do you think YOU'RE going?!"
Stryke looked behind her at the source of the voice. A robot with four three-fingered arms, four feet that slightly resembled bird feet sprouting from two short, thick brown legs, a small black body with a red right shoulder and a tan left shoulder, and a large half oval-shaped head with black eyes and a large, egg-shaped hole where it's mouth would be approached the wolf/fox. Three horizontal black stripes decorated each of the robot's cheeks. The rest of its head was yellow in color. The bottom pair of arms was black and positioned a little behind its upper red arms. The two inside feet were yellow. The outer two feet were purple. The robot was much taller than even the highest building in the village had been before it was destroyed. The top of its head was barely visible through the burning tree branches.
"Oohhhhhhh crud..." The canine mix's ears flattened against her head as she looked up at the robot.
'Run, you idiot!' Stryke's brain seemed to scream at her. The hybrid came to her senses and took off running through the trees as the robot's purple right foot came crashing down where she had been standing.
"You won't get away THAT easily!" The robot chased after the cyborg. Balls of flame shot out of its mouth toward the wolf/fox as it pursued her.
Stryke leapt out of the way as one of the fireballs flew past her. 'This guy's NASTY!' She looked around. 'There's gotta be some way to lose him...' The wolf/fox spotted a narrow path through the trees to her left. 'Let's see him try to fit through here...' She dodged another ball of flame, and then ran between the trees.
The robot chuckled. "You can't get away now." It shot a fireball at the trees, catching them on fire.
Stryke ran as fast as she could from the fire, shielding the infant from the embers that fell down around them as she ran. The cyborg was fast, but she couldn't outrun a fire as it spread across dry wood. Before long, the blaze had nearly caught up with her.
'Almost there...' The wolf/fox looked ahead of her. The trees were starting to thin and the shore could be seen. 'If I can make it far enough into the water, that thing back there shouldn't be able to get to me...'
Suddenly, a large, flaming tree truck fell in front of Stryke, blocking her path. The wolf/fox stopped in her tracks.
'Great...' Stryke looked around. The fire was starting to surround her. She looked back at the tree trunk.
'Here goes...' The cyborg held the baby in her arms tightly and jumped quickly over the flaming branch, through the fire that was rapidly eating it's way through the wood. The wolf/fox landed on her feet a couple yards away and looked back. The robot that had been chasing her could barely be seen through the flames.
Stryke ran to the shore and looked around until she spotted a small wooden boat a few yards to her left. 'Perfect!' She ran to the boat, placed the infant inside, and then climbed in. The cyborg pulled the oars out from under the seats and started rowing. She did not stop until the island was barely visible in the distance.
'That was a close one...' Stryke looked back at Dator Island. 'Problem is, what do I do now?'
Just then, it started to rain heavily. The baby the cyborg had taken with her started to cry as the drops of water beat on the two canines, stinging their noses, eyes, and ears as it hit.
Stryke picked the infant up. "Hang on kid, this ride's gonna be a bit rough..." As she said this, the ocean tossed the small boat between its waves, which were getting bigger and stronger by the second. Soon, the ocean's waves were too much for the boat and it broke into several pieces. The wolf/fox tried her best to keep herself and the baby from going underwater as she swam toward the nearest piece of wood. Once she reached it, Stryke placed the infant on top of it and swam as fast as she could in the direction they had been heading. She did not get very far before a wave crashed onto the plank, separating the cyborg from it.
The baby cried harder as the wolf/fox drifted away from him. The cyborg tried her hardest to reach the plank the infant was on, but the waves kept pushing her back. After several attempts, Strykes muscles finally gave out on her. The exhausted canine then passed out.
