Spinal Disease
Two types of spinal disease are disc herniation (slipped disc) and disc decay.
Spinal disease can occur in any breed of dog but is commonly seen in the short-legged breeds such as dachshund, basset hound, shih tzu, Lhasa apso, corgi, and Pekingese.
Spinal disease is usually managed by prescription medications or surgery.
Additionally, your veterinarian may recommend preventing excess body weight gain.
Your veterinarian may implement a weight loss program so your dog can achieve an ideal weight.
Once your dog reaches an ideal weight, a weight management program should be implemented so to prevent future weight gain.
Spinal disease medications for dogs include acepromazine and prednisone.
