New Alumni Directory Planned
The
Alumni Association has accepted a proposal from Harris Publishing to research
and publish an updated Flint Central Alumni Directory. The contract has been signed and work will
commence sometime in the spring. We are
passing along to Harris the class lists for those who have graduated from
Central since 2000 as well as the all corrections of which we are aware to the
previous list. In conjunction with the
work on the directory, Harris will make the entire class list available on the
Internet, so alumni members can update their own information. Of course, individual members will not have
access to other members’ personal information.
However, we will be appointing moderators for each class, who can update
classmates’ information and extract the data for reunion planning. There will also be to system administrators
who can update information on the Web directory for those members who do not
have access to the Web and may not have a moderator assigned for their
class. If you are interested in becoming
a moderator for your class, please contact the webmaster
for this site.
FCHS Scheduled to Close
That’s
right, the Flint Board of Education has announced that Flint Central High
School is
on a list of schools to be closed in 2006 or 2007. With declining enrollment, the Flint schools are operating too many buildings and programs
and have decided they must consolidate to reduce costs. With a lack of funds to build or renovate
structures, they are looking at closing the schools which are more expensive to
operate and moving the programs elsewhere.
As the oldest secondary buildings in the system, Whittier and Central are on the chopping block. This decision is not yet irrevocable. The school system is busy formulating a
long-range plan and a building renovation millage proposal to send to the
voters. After all, even the newer
buildings in Flint will need a lot of renovation and restoration to
bring them up to snuff. A group has been
formed to gather citizen input on what the community wants in terms of school
programs and buildings. It is possible
that this group will advocate a plan to keep Central open in its present location to take
advantage of the great educational opportunities afforded by proximity to the
institutions in the Flint Cultural Center and two of Flint’s four institutions of higher learning. Check their progress at:
Great Schools Initiative.
FCHS Now the “Phoenix”
After
a great deal of work, the student body of Flint Central High
School
selected their new mascot at the end of the 2003-2004 school year. They chose the Phoenix, a mythical bird of great strength and power which is
reborn from its own ashes. No art work
was chosen by the students. The new logo
for the Phoenix will be selected during the current (2004-2005)
school year. The new team name has been
well received by the sports broadcasters in the area who are using it
faithfully to announce Central’s victories.
Central’s teams have been doing quite well under their new name, leading
us to hope that the Phoenix will continue the great athletic tradition that
belonged to the Indians.
FCHS No Longer "Home of the Indians"
Central High School Removes "Indians" from the School, Saturday,
August 16, 2003
On
Saturday, a select group of school administrators "raided" the school
to remove any presence of the Flint Central Indian mascot. All items with the
word "Indians" or the picture of the "Indian" were
carefully crated and stored for safe-keeping. Use of the words or pictures on
walls or doorways was carefully painted over. This was done in secret and by
surprise ostensibly to prevent the items from disappearing prior to their
collection. The only remnants of the former mascot are the logo in the center
of the gym floor and the engraved stone plaque in the monument on the school
lawn. It is planned to remove these, also, but the work must be professionally
done. The items in storage will remain there until the administration and the
school board agree on their disposition. Rumors are that they may be sold
(auctioned) to help defray the cost of replacing some items (such as sports
uniforms) which were confiscated. The administrators plan to have the current
student body select a replacement mascot toward the end of the school year.
Regardless
of the actions of the school board, those who attended FCHS during the
"Indian" period (1923 through 2003) are now and will forever be
entitled to consider themselves "Flint Central Indians." The FCHS
Alumni Association plans to continue providing quality "Indian"
memorabilia to our members. We have paperweights, desk sets, and letter holders
made from the marble from the old girl's shower stalls with red and black
plaques featuring the "Indian". We have sweatshirts and t-shirts
featuring the "Indian". And we have coffee mugs with the picture of
the "Indian". And, when the student body select a new mascot, we will
add items featuring that mascot to our inventory to recognize the alumni from
the new era, too. All items are available for sale; proceeds go to support our
scholarship program for graduating seniors and our distinguished alumni recognition
program. Contact Julie Taylor at 232-8936 for information.
Flint School Board Decides to Drop "Indians"
In the
fall of 2001, the Flint Board of Education in a fit of "political
correctness" voted to drop the use of Indian-related mascots at Flint
Schools. This affected Central High School, "The Indians", Whittier Middle
School,
"The Braves", and Pierce Elementary
School,
"The Pierce Arrows." (Apparently the members of the board were
ignorant of the fact that the Pierce Arrow was an automobile, manufactured in Rochester New York during the first half of the last century.) No public
hearing on this change was held before the decision was reached. However, due
to a severe budget crisis, the board has removed funding for the mascot changes
from the budget to concentrate on more urgent expenditures and has postponed
the change indefinitely. Regardless of the actions of the Board of Education, ALL CHS GRADUATES who attended the high school during the
period when the mascot was "The Indian" are and will continue to be
entitled to refer to themselves as "Central Indians". If and when
this issue re-emerges, we will keep you posted on this site or via our email
newsletter. Subscribe today.

We have added a page with links we think will
be of interest to CHS Alumni. We have links to the web sites of Flint Central High
School. The
Flint Community Schools, and history pages about the school on the Flint
Public Library's Flint Timeline. We also have a couple other links we have
found while browsing around the web looking for FCHS information. In addition,
we have links to a few of the high school alumni sites on the web which have
listings for FCHS. So please try out our links and let us know what you think.
We
are now affiliated with Alumni.Net
When you register (for free) as a CHS classmate on the Alumni.Net site, you will be earning money for our
programs. That's right, every new member of alumni.net who registers from a
link from our site earns the association a quarter. If all 39,000 alumni in our
2000 Alumni Directory sign up on Alumni.Net, we would have $5000 to help fund
our scholarship program. So what are you waiting for? Click through to Alumni.Net
and find out which of your classmates
have beaten you to it. If any of your friends are missing and you know their
email address, please refer them to our site and encourage them to sign up on
Alumni.Net, too.

Who We Are
The Central High School Alumni Association
was formed in 1990 by a group of alumni representing many different graduating
classes. Its purpose is to promote Flint Central High
School, its
students and its programs; and to recognize CHS alumni for outstanding achievements. Our organization is open to
anyone, student or faculty, who is a friend of CHS. We sell CHS souvenirs and accept donations to fund our
scholarship and awards programs. Since 1990, we have named and honored over 50
Distinguished Alumni and presented over $50,000 in scholarships to deserving
members of the graduating class
The association worked with the high school
and an outside firm to publish in 2000 a directory of all CHS alumni. We hope this will encourage Central's many alumni to come
together to remember their friends and teachers from high school and support
their alma mater. Unfortunately, copies are no longer available from the
publisher, B.C. Harris, Inc. We may publish an updated edition in a few years
if demand is there.
We need help selecting award and scholarship
recipients, raising funds, organizing our banquet, maintaining membership
files, and producing this newsletter. If you cherish the memories of your times
at CHS, we invite you to join us. If you have been
successful in life because of the great start you got at CHS, we invite you to join us. If you remember hard times in Flint and want to help students leave CHS with the education and the heritage they need to succeed, we
invite you to join us.
Please fill out the membership or
contribution form on our fundraising page or contact us at fchsaa@comcast.net for information about
our meetings and events or check this site. The board regularly meets at 4:00 P.M. on the 1st Monday of each month (unless that falls on
a holiday week as it does in January and September, when we meet on the 2nd
Monday.) Customarily, we do not meet in July and August. Our meetings are
usually held in the Central High School Community Room, on the 1st floor, near
the cafeteria.
