Growing up with music
With a professional musician as a father, I was introduced
to music at an early age. I started off with the piano, tried my
hand at the violin, played the flute for several years, and even
sang in a choir for a while until I realized my heart wasn't into
making music but listening and dancing to it instead.
Music in my life today
Though I do not perform music anymore, I still have music to make
my life more enjoyable. Without music, dance just wouldn't be what
it is. I also sing in the shower or at home when I'm alone. I softly
hum melodies as I walk down the streets or wait for the metro. And
I especially love listening to sad music when I'm feeling down and
lonely, for there is nothing like a beautiful melody to soothe my
heart and feed my soul.
Favorite Music Genres
I actually like all kinds of music from pop to jazz, country to
classical, ballroom to New Age, musical theatre to reggae, and R&B
to oldies. The only genres I can't seem to enjoy are hard-rock or
heavy metal and rap music. My favorite genres are oldies
(doo wop and 60s music in particular), ballroom
(includes Latin), and classical music
(especially from the classical and romantic periods).
Favorite Music Artists and Songs/Pieces
Without doubt, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
is my favorite composer. His music moves me beyond words. The 2nd
movement of his Clarinet concerto has
the uncanny ability to bring me to tears. The
Platters is my favorite Doo Wop group. I also love the sad
soft ballads by Simon & Garfunkel
and The Beatles. I enjoy listening to
The Turtles and The
Monkeys. Killing Me Softly by
Roberta Flack is a personal favorite song. As for ballroom music,
nothing gets me as excited as the drums of a good upbeat Samba.
And slow Waltz music has the power to
elevate me to a new world above the clouds. Bottom line is, whether
it'd be soft and sad or upbeat and happy, good music needs to really
bring out my emotions.
