You've been asking me to provide enclosure performance data regarding acoustical response and subwoofer enclosure designs so as to outline the relative difference of these systems.
Well here goes, I've started by adding data on the 88-Series 10/12/15" Subwoofers, and the 87-Sereis 10/12/15 Subwoofers. I have not offered the 8" drivers at this time.
Each model or series comes with 5 or 6 sets of data. I've tried to offer 3-sealed and 3-ported designs with a graphed response to assist you in evaluating which system best suits your needs.
Smaller port diameters yield shorter port lengths, however one must remember that the port must successfully displace the air inside of the cabinet, with little or no resistance or restrictions. (restrictions of the port cause high windage noise for the system... which is highly undesirable, and dangerous). If the Port diameter is too small for a subwoofer/enclosure application, port tuning will shift upwards with power/displacement, causing a loss of SPL (up to -3dB) and may put the woofer at risk. In the examples I've shown, I've tried to use the minimum acceptable Port diameter(area/length ratio's) suitable for use, so as to offer the broadest range of applications possible. Note: This is the reason that Eclipse factory only recommend Sealed 2nd order designs for non-professional users, or those users that do not own their own acoustical modeling software. Sealed enclosures are safer to use, easier to build and offer predictable results.
