1984-86 Fiero Headlight Motors

84-86 motors The headlight motors used in 1984-1986 Pontiac Fieros did not stand the test of time.  Even working motors I open up are usually not very far from breaking.  The problem is that the motor is designed to turn itself off by using its own power to compress a spring until a switch is thrown.  Two small bumpers were installed to allow the motor to gently build up tension as the spring reaches its maximum compression point.  These bumpers decompose and cause the motors to go from spinning at a high RPM to an abrupt stop.  In addition, pieces of decomposed bumpers get caught between the gears.  The end result is that the main gear usually becomes stripped leaving your headlight motor to spin freely and not turn itself off.

I rebuild the headlight motors with brass gears and improved quality bumpers that should stand up longer than the originals.  The parts are all thoroughly cleaned with automotive parts solvant and properly lubricated with a silicon based lubricant.  I usually try to get 2-3 good headlight motors out of every 4 cores I rebuild to ensure the highest quality of the rebuilds.   The other potential problem spot is the electrical contacts (brushes).   I use only brushes which are not more than 50% worn.

A NOTE ON THE BRASS GEARS:  The brass replacement gears conduct electricity while the original nylon gears do not. This is not a problem on standard fiero applications where the arm of the motor is not grounded to the rest of the frame. On some fiero kits or non-standard applications this can be an issue. If you think this is a problem, talk to me about it. I also have limited OEM nylon gears available in such cases.
I also accept your old motors as cores at the rate of $25.00 each as explained below.

Out of Stock Notice:

If the main page says "out of stock", it generally means that I have lots of motors, but no fiero motor arms. The little steel arm that comes off the motors drive shaft is the part I run out of first. So, you can 1) buy a motor without the arm by sending me e-mail 2) send me your motor and I will rebuild and return 3) wait till I get more arms in and take down the message.

1984-86 Fiero Headlight Motor Rebuilding Services

Cores    The best option for most people  is to send me your old motors as  cores.   If you have a particular attachment to your headlight motors,  you can send  them to me and I will rebuild them and send them back. This way is also $5.00 cheaper per motor because it simplifies things a bit on my end. Most people send me their headlight motors as either part of their payment (each core is worth $25.00) or send them after receiving their rebuilt motor,  in which case I send a refund.  This is a good option if you need to  drive your car and currently are using your bad motors to keep your headlights  in the open (upright) position.

I also generally accept motors even if you do not need purchase rebuilt  motors.  Please contact me before sending your motors if you plan to  send more than a few motors, however.  (I may not be interested in train-load  of motors!).  I buy 84-86 motors at $25.00 each and 87-88 motors at $25.00 each.

(The image above shows a batch of 82-86 cores that have been disassembled and are about ready to undergo the cleaning and inspection processes)

1987-88 Fiero Headlight Motor Rebuilding Services

87-88 motors The 1987-88 headlight motors were definately a better design than the 1984-86 design.  They tend to run smoother, quieter, and last longer.  The brushes have a nice design that allows them to last a long time.  However, they still stop working and require rebuilding.  The main gear uses 3 plastic bearings to transfer torque to the main shaft.  I believe they were intentionally designed to be the "weakest link" in the drive train of these motors.  With time they decompose and break down to dust so that torque stops being transfered to the main shaft.

I rebuild these motors for $30.00 each.  I install new plastic bearings,   thoroughly clean the inside parts, check the brushes (I do have replacements   if your are especially warn) and lubricate with a silicon based lubricant.    I do not keep a large inventory of these motors, therefore I do not currently sell them individually.

1993-02 Firebird Headlight Motor Rebuilding Services

93-02 motors After a long wait, I'm very excited to be able to offer 1993-2002 Firebird headlight motor rebuilding services. The common problem on these is a stripped out gear. If your motor runs continuously unless it is unplugged, or if it makes a loud noice when trying to lift the assembly, then you are in need of a new gear. I use a brass replacement gear which is much, much stronger than the original gear. The original plastic gear will easily strip if there is any resistance, such as ice on the headlight assembly. I will guarantee the gear on these motors for 5 years.

In addition to replacing the gear, the motor will be cleaned, relubricated and I maintain a stock of extra parts to replace any other common problems.

1984-86 Fiero Headlight Assemblies

87-88 motors I have a limited quanitity of 1984-88 complete headlight assemblies.  These are great if your frustrated with your quest to get your headlights working or if you have damage to your headlight assemgbly.  These have rebuilt motors and the whole assembly has been tested together (with the relays in the case of 84-86 motors).

1984-86 Fiero Headlight  Relays

cv Sometimes 1984-86 headlight motors do not work because the relays have gone bad.  There are two relays associated with each of your headlights.  One is located on the headlight assembly itself and the other is located to the left of the left headlight assembly on the driver's side inner fender wall.  If both of your motors are misbehaving then it may be this relay.  If just one is misbehaving then it is either a bad motor or a bad relay.  See the information under diagnosing your headlight problem.

Headlight Switches

cv Perhaps so I can feel like I offer "all things related to headlights", I also offer headlight switches.  I can't promise I have one with the writing still intact, but I will send you a picture of the best that I have to offer at any given time.  These are the headlight and dimmer switches on the left hand side of the main console.

1987-88 Wiring Harness

Because the 1987-88 headlights are generally more trouble free than the earlier models, the 1987-88 wiring harness is a nice item to allow you to convert over to the newer style.  If for some reason you need an 84-86 harness, I can probably get you one, just email me.
