Centurion
by Derek Hohls

CENTURION is a game based on the 'game system' created by Reiner Knizia in his New Games in Old Rome (published by Piatnik). In order to play this game you will need the equipment it supplies. CENTURION is not supported or endorsed by the manufacturer or designer of that game system. CENTURION is the copyright of Derek R Hohls, 1995.

There is no doubt that the legions of Rome were the driving force for her expansion into one of the greatest empires in the world. Service in the legions was a high calling, and within the legions the struggle to reach the top has perhaps only been equalled in the modern world's cutthroat business arena...

Materials

In addition to the game board, a set of coloured cards, including those numbered 1 through to 5 as well as the 2 banner cards, are used for each player. Furthermore, each player needs a coloured figure. Five stones in each of the 5 colours, are needed.

(Note: the game board can be easily made, based on the sketch shown at the end of these rules.)

Preparation

Lay out the game board between the players. It shows a series of spaces, laid out in 5 rows, with each row having half the number of the one below it.

All the number cards are shuffled and dealt out face down next to the game board. The red and lilac cards are shuffled into one dech, representing the Legions of Rome, while the blue and green cards make up the opposing armies. The yellow cards represent unassigned legions.

Each player recives a set of coloured stones; in 4 player games, each player only gets 4 srones, while in 5 player games, each player only gets 3 stones. Each player recives a number of Talents (chips) with a total value as follows: 3 player game, 20 each; 4 player game, 15 each; 5 player game, 12 each.

Course of the Game

Intial Placement of Stones

Once played, cards are set to one side. When a player has played all of his numbered cards, he must pick up all of his discarded cards to use again.

Game End and Winning

The game ends as soon as the one player is apoointed General. The winner is the player with the most Talents. In case of a tie, the player who has the highest ranked stone is the winner - use lower ranked stone to break further ties.

Series

CENTURION can be adapted to series play. The scores from individual games are recorded consecutively. The player with the best total score at the end of the series has won.
