A.S.A = Amateur Swimming Association. The governing body of the sport of swimming in this country.

 

F.IN.A = Federation INternational Aquatique. The World governing body of the sport of swimming.

 

P.B. = Personal Best (Time)

1.    Life Time P.B. = Best time ever for stroke & distance.

2.    Seasons P.B.    = Best time this season for stroke & distance.

 

D.Q. = Disqualified / Disqualification. This will appear on a time-slip or a result sheet. It indicates that the swimmer has been disqualified from that race for a particular reason.

 

TK    = Timekeeper.

ST     = Starter.

TK/J = Timekeeper/Judge. This person will carry out the duties of Timekeeper and Turn Judge.

J        = Judge.

REF. = Referee.

JOA  = Jury Of Appeal. The previous 5 definitions are fairly self-explanatory. The JOA is a body of 3 officials, appointed by the promoter of an event with the function of hearing appeals at that event, instead of the Referee.

 

FC/FS = Front Crawl/Freestyle.

BK       = Backstroke.

BR       =  Breast-stroke.

FLY     =  Butterfly.

 

I/M       =  Individual Medley. This is an event where all 4 main competitive strokes are swum by 1 swimmer in the order, Butterfly; Backstroke; Breast-stroke; Freestyle. 

M/R      = Medley Relay. This is an event where all 4 main competitive strokes are swum by a team of 4 swimmers in the order, Backstroke; Breast-stroke; Butterfly; Freestyle. With each of the swimmers swimming one particular stroke each. It is important that the strokes are swum in this order because that is the order laid down in ASA law. In Medley events Freestyle means any stroke other than Backstroke, Breast-stroke or Butterfly. Usually Freestyle is swum as Front-crawl, this being the fastest recognised competitive stroke.

 

F.A.D      = From A Dive. Term used in training to indicate that the start should be from the poolside using a dive.

 

R.I.          = Rest Interval. The period between sets. 

 

B.B.M.    = Beats Below Max. This refers to the number of heart beats per minute below Maximum heart rate. A rough guide to work out your maximum heart rate is 220 – Your age. ( E.G. 220 – 15 = 205 )

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
