GRANTHAM SWIMMING CLUB TEAM SELECTION POLICY
1
The Chief Coach has overall responsibility for Team selection
2
The Club Committee shall appoint a Team Selection Sub-Committee to assist the Chief Coach in matters relating to team selection. This Sub-Committee shall comprise 5 members, who will be ‘activated’ as required to take account of members’ temporary unavailability, due to absence (for example, on holiday or illness). Such ‘activations’ may be recommended by the Chief Coach but must be authorised by the Club Committee in advance of such responsibility being assumed by the proposed member.

3
Suitably qualified and experienced club members may volunteer to act as officials and Team Managers for galas. Where such volunteers are required, this will be indicated on the provisional team selection sheet. Volunteers are requested to record their name against the responsibility that they are willing to accept.

4
The procedure for identifying swimmers’ availability for galas, selecting them for the team and making final swimmer-event selection is as follows:

a
The Chief Coach will make a provisional list of team members, which will form the basis of final team selection.
b
Every effort shall be made to post this list on the Club notice board at least 3 weeks prior to the gala in question.

c
Swimmers are required to indicate their availability for the team by ticking their name. The deadline for this is by end of training on the Friday one week before the gala in question. If swimmers are not available either they or their parent/guardian are to indicate their non-availability, by placing a cross against their name, on this provisional team sheet at the earliest opportunity to enable substitutes to be posted if required.

d
Once posted, no one is permitted to make deletions from this provisional team list. However, the Chief Coach or members of the Team Selection Sub-Committee appointed by the Chief Coach may make additions to this list if it is apparent that there may be insufficient swimmers available to form a team from the original provisional list.

e
The Chief Coach or members of the Team Selection Sub-Committee appointed by the Chief Coach for this express purpose, will make the final team selection, allocating swimmers to events. This may not be completed until the day of the event due to late changes in availability. Swimmers will be allocated to events according to criteria set by the Chief Coach. These criteria will take into account swimmers’ individual ability, the type of event and the general needs of the team. The Chief Coach or his appointed representative may request assistance in the preparation and publication of this final team selection.

f
The final Team Selection Sheet showing which swimmers have been allocated to which events will be published as soon as is possible. In practice, this may not be until the team assembles for the gala in question due to late changes to availability that affect the overall balance of swimmer allocation to events.

g
Copies of the final team selection sheet will be made available to the team managers at the gala in question.

5
OVER RIDING PRINCIPLE IN MAKING TEAM CHANGES. The Coaches, Teachers, Team Selection Sub-Committee and Team Managers shall not change team selection either before or during a gala unless there are compelling reasons for change. When amending a team selection, the reasons for doing so shall be explained to the swimmers involved and every effort shall be made to ensure that they understand the reasons for the changes.
