FIRE WALKERS' GRILLED SOLES

EIGHT Germans who firewalked over red-hot coles ended up with serious burns when the character-building excercise went wrong. Trainer Sven Riehl, who led them in three hours of meditation before taking them across, swiftly realised the coals were too hot. Too embarrassed to turn back, he hobbled off with serious burns. His students followed one by one. Dr Riehl,35,a GP, is now in a wheelchair waiting for skin grafts to the soles of his feet. He said:"I wanted to break it off, but the way back was further than to carry on." Willi Schmidt, leader of the the group of German professionals, called off the lesson when the eight man collapsed screaming in agony. A waiter watching watching at the Club Aldiana in Faro, Portugal said: "They were like sheep. It was painfull to watch and must have been agony for those taking part-but still they kept coming." Chemist Thomas Jentgens,53,from Cologne suffered second degree burns.He said:"We had been concentrating on cutting out everythink around us-and it worked too well. None of us realised what was happening to the others."
