Call Me, Call Me

Jet-o! Ed here, well… not really, but Ed is hacking into Bebop Terminal to leave message! Ed is fine, so is Ein-woof woof.  We are looking for Ed’s lost father-person! Say hello to Faye-Faye and Spike-o, k?

Ja ne!

 

Jet shoved back from the terminal, running a hand over his bald head. He didn’t know whether to feel happy to hear from her, or sad about how her note had brought back so much.  He pushed a button, wiping the screen blank.  He knew he would be replying, but for the moment he just wanted to think.

 

Lighting up a cigarette he stared into the beautiful emptiness of space.  They had been living in the self-imposed silence for over a month, each trying to get over the loss of Spike in their own way.  In fact, he had only spotted Faye twice since the funeral, each time her eyes were so haunted that he didn’t know what to say, merely brushing past her, barely touching as though…

 

She was the only sign on this blasted ship that reminded him he was alive, and he couldn’t even speak in full sentences when she was near.  Jet was disgusted with himself for that above all else.  It wasn’t as though he hadn’t known it would turn out like it did.  He had seen death hunting his friend since the day they had met, just tried to ignore it.

 

He missed Ed that was all.  He grimaced, pulling the message back up, and tapping slowly on the keys.

 

Ed, Jet here.  I just wanted to say I’m glad you and Ein are all right… I was wondering where he had gotten to.  And… If you ever give up on finding your father you know there’s room to spare on the Bebop.  As for the others…

Well… I’ll say hello for you.

Jet tapped the send button and closed off the window.  He had bonsai trees to water.  As he walked down the hall to his plants he brushed past Faye.

 

“I-I’m sorry.”

 

“Yeah. Me too.”

And they headed their opposite ways once more.
