Rin is a little human girl who's parents were killed. After that, she lived by herself in her village, and the villagers are not very nice to her. She is silent--she does not show remorse or fear. [Sometimes, anyway.] She insisted on 'helping' Sesshomaru after he was injured in a recent battle with Inu-Yasha. She was killed by wolves who attacked her village [thanks to Kouga] but then came back to life when Sesshomaru used his sword to save her.
