Note here about test kits. I went the usual newbie route, as most do, of trying what the LFS recommended (and sold). In retrospect, spend the money and get a good test kit up front. As with many things in this hobby, money saved on bad kits could be spent on other things, and you will probably end up buying a good kit later on anyway.

I recommend Salifert. They seem to be about in the middle of the price range, are accurate, and easy to read.
