The regular announcer Shadoe Stevens first came to prominence as the host of America's Top 40 when he replaced Casey Kasem as host. John Davidson, who in the original version sat in the upper left square, hosted the show. Jim J.Bullock replaced John for a week in 1988.
Joan Rivers and Shadoe Stevens each hosted a show.
The New Hollywood Squares which was shortened to "Hollywood Squares" during the second season, had a completely different outlook from the original version. The most notable difference being that it was the first game show to go on location, traveling to Hollywood,Florida in 1986, and then subsequently to Radio City Music Hall and Club Med in the Bahamas. The first year on location in Florida they filmed outside next to a beach and the stars simply put an X or O in a slot conveniently placed in front of them. Eventually they just took the entire electronic set with them.
The first nine stars on the New Hollywood squares included center square Bronson Pinchot, Mariette Harley, John Byner, Ahmad Rashad, Jackie Collins and violinist Itsak Perlman.
