This is the second time I have seen this movie, I have just ordered the double-feature off of Amazon.com that comes with Terror Tract. This movie is how the 90's slashers should have been like. Why this film gets direct-to-video and shit like Soul Survivors and Valentine hit the big screen is beyond me. Well here is the story,
It starts off with a couple in a car on make out point.....making out (no shit) and the guy tries to go all the way but doesn't succeed. When she says ok a car pulls up behind them with there high beams on. The guy gets out to go see who it is, thinking it was a friend, to bad it turns out to be a psychopath that murders him, then murders the girl as well.
Then we have Jody Marken (Brittany Murphy) who won't go all the way with her boyfriend Kenny Apscott (Gabriel Mann) so he tells her it's over. She gets into her house late and her father Sheriff Brent Marken (Michael Beihn) grounds her. He then gets called down and realizes he has a murderer running a muck in the sweet town of Cherry Falls. Jay Mohr plays Leonard Marliston, Jody's teacher, within the next day, 2 more students are killed, the only link between them all is the fact that they are all "virgins" apparently, the killer is killing anyone that hasn't gotten laid yet.
Jody turns to Leonard for support after she breaks up with Kenny, she feels Leonard is the only one who she can turn to. That night, at a giant town meeting, Brent tells the troubled parents that the only link is the fact that all the kids are virgins, it raises suspicion and forces the students to hold a "POP YOUR CHERRY" party at this old house. The movie goes on and it has alot of dark secrets and the killer is hard to figure out.
The gore is pretty decent, but it wasn't the gore that kept me interested, the movie moves at a fast pace and has very good characters that you care about. The directing is very well done, nothing out of the ordinary but it is done in a way that makes it very enjoyable to watch. It also had a pretty cool killer, I really dug the creepy costume that the killer wears, the deaths were really good and the plot isn't just a "death sex death sex" plot.
Brittany Murphy pulls off a solid performance as Jody, along with Gabriel Mann and Micheal Beign, but the one who surprises you the most is comedian Jay Mohr. He proves he can actually do more then just SNL skits, I have been a fan of his, and I really think he did a solid performance in this film. I would love to see him do another film like this, one that ACTUALLY hits theatres.
I say, check this film out, this is one of the best direct to video slashers that stays true to the horror genre. It gives us solid characters, a interesting plot, and is a very entertaining film to watch. I have seen it 2 times, planning on watching it alot more once the DVD comes from Amazon. So, Cherry Falls, 4.5 skulls, check it out!!!
