Our Concerts
Poly Stage Production has been organising campus concerts since its formation in 1988, by working closely with various records companies and radio stations in bringing recording artistes.
Below are some of the concerts organised by the Poly Stage Production:
Emil Chow Concert 04/05/96
4
May '96 had been a very special day to many Ngee Ann Polytechnic Students. It was the day
when they could see their favourite singer, Emil Chow, singing live on stage in their very
own campus.
This concert in Ngee Ann Polytechnic was part of Emil Chow's Campus Concert Tour Plan.
Before coming to Ngee Ann Polytechnic, he had held many campus concerts in his own
country, Taiwan. In fact, Ngee Ann Polytechnic was very lucky to be chosen as Emil Chow's
first concert station outside Taiwan. After the Concert here in Ngee Ann Polytechnic in
Singapore, he would move on to other campus in other neigbouring countries.
Unlike normal concerts, Emil Chow's decision to have this campus concert tour was not
because of the money, but simply because he missed his days in school. Because ticket to
Emil Chow's Campus Concert is free, he did not get any profit out of the event. In fact,
he spent money out of his own pocket for this concert to pay for the professional stage
lighting service and his few other guitarists.
During the Concert, Emil Chow sang a lot of his hit songs unplugged with his 3 Guitarists
and 1 pianist. Well known to be a humourous guy, Emil Chow added a number of jokes in
between songs, and even had a good rapport with the audience. Laughter and good songs made
the show a very successful one.
The show ended at around 9 pm.
Nisa Lin / Zhang KeFan Concert 09/07/96
This was the first concert that PSP organised
(together with Pony Canyon) since the semester started. Pony Canyon's 2 Taiwanese Singers,
Nisa Lin & Zhang Ke Fan, came to Ngee Ann Polytechnic to publicise their individual
new albums.
About 400 students attended this concert which began at 5.30 pm at Lecture Theatre 26.
Nisa Lin, accompanied by her two dancers, started
the concert with
her new song "xiao xin ai qing" (be careful of love).
The next singer was Zhang Ke Fan. His strong vocal received loud applause from the
audience. The song that he sang include those from his previous albums and his latest one.
His new hit song, "ai cuo le" (love wrongly) was a song on the Singapore's 933
top 20 chart.
Games were being played by the two singers together with the student audience. Laughters
and joy were non-stop in the game shows.
To round up the show, Zhang Ke fan sang one last song. The concert came to an end at
around 7.30
Karen Mok Concert 27/07/98
Karen Mok lived up to her name as a daredevil as she treated NP students to an electrifying performance.Power Station Concert 30/07/98
POP DUO Power Station Brought the house down with
their
electrifying performance in Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) on 30 July.
Also known as Dong Li Huo Che in Mandarin, the duo from Taiwan, under the
record label Whats Music, entertained the crowd with a mixture of
soothing ballads as well as rock metal hits such as Tomorrows Tomorrows
Tomorrow and Love Song of the Li Mountains.
Weve prepared more ballads for the fans in Singapore because Singaporeans were
known to be more reserved and prefer slow numbers, said one of the band
members, Yan Zhi Lin, in Mandarin. Some 500 tickets for the concert were snapped up in
less than an hour, two days before the concert with fans queuing more than two hours for
them.
Julia Peng / Yong Bang Concert 14/02/02
Julia Peng from Taiwan flew in for a 3-day stay in Singapore. She came to Ngee
Ann in the 14th Feb.
Around 400 tickets distributed at the atrium was sold out in 15 mins.
Brochures about her concert and a roadshow on her new album waas set up during the
distribution of the tickets.
The audience was treated to a great concert as special appearances were put up before
Julia Peng came on stage. Gurmit Singh amazed the audience with an old mandarin number.
Julia Peng sang at least seven songs on her new album as well as a favourite request from
the audience.
It was a great experience for the crew having her to perform in the Cultural Theatre.
There were special appearance by Jaime Teo (Miss Singapore Universe 2001), Gurmit Singh
and Yong Bang as well.
Jordan Chan Concert 30/08/02
The moment we knew Jordan Chan was able to slot in a performance at NP, we
knew the students were definitely in for a treat.
Preparations for the concert started less than 2 weeks before the actual event. But all
wasnt smooth sailing as initially, our advisor opposed to the idea of holding a
concert during the test week, but we fought hard to convince him why we should have it.
The queue for the tickets collection started 2 hours earlier than the stipulated time, and
the queue stretched from the clubhouse all the way to the slope outside Canteen 1.
The big day finally arrived on 30 August and we were all kept busy since morning, from
assisting in sound checks, to decorating the venue to maintaining orderly queue that
formed in the early afternoon.
A lot of us didnt have a proper lunch/dinner, but seeing Jordan putting up a
credible performance despite nursing a sickness made it all worthwhile. He didnt
disappoint with his infectious songs and sincere intimate interaction with the students.
Back with a new album and a garang hip-hop image, Jordan came across as a very
real person with lotsa hidden comic potential. Though not exactly considered
as good-looking, he charms with his easy-going yet quiet persona much like the character
he played in the hit movie series Young & Dangerous that shot him to fame.
No wonder the whole LT 26 were driven crazy by him.
The 1 hour concert ended soon and Jordan had to rush off. Before leaving his mark here in
NP, as usual, all of us took a group photo with him and everyone shook hands with
him.
Like the PEPSI ad that had us all singing Ask For More, unfortunately, he was
whisked off by his record company.
As for us, we celebrated at where else, but Al-Ameen for a much deserved break and makan.
