GREAT SALT PLAINS

The Great Salt Plains State Park is located in northwest Oklahoma just north of Jet, Oklahoma. Thick layers of rock salt underlie most of western Oklahoma, and natural springs emit high-salinity brine to the several salt plains. Oklahoma iodine, produced from deep brines in the northwest, is the Nation’s sole domestic supply.

Mineral Deposits in Oklahoma

From the Oklahoma Geological Survey

At the Great Salt Plains State Park, huge sections of the Plain are roped off for the public to dig for selenite crystals. The crystals formed here have an "hourglass" figure of sand encased inside of them. These unique crystals are specific to Oklahoma and people come from all over the world to collect them for personal use as well as commercial sale.
