12/19/02 Campaign Update

As of today, North American segment of our campaign has raised $4,210.

New York and Boston Initiatives have transferred $2,950 and $1,260, respectively, to HRFT's bank account in Turkey.

Death Toll Hits 101

The breakdown of the causes of death is listed as follows:

• 60 protestors died as a result of the hunger strike.
• 32 prisoners were killed during the military's "Return to Life" operation in December 2000.
• 4 protestors were killed during the Kucukarmutlu operation in November 2001.
• 3 protestors burned themselves to death as a protest against the operations.
• 1 striker died of medical mistreatment.
• 1 supporting striker was killed in the Netherlands by fascists.

Most Protestors Stop Hunger Strike and Some Continue

All, but one, political groups that have taken part in the hunger strikes have recently declared that they will stop hunger strikes as of May 31, 2002 and continue to protest F-type prisons by using other means of political struggle. One group, DHKP-C, continues the hunger strikes.

Around 400 Survivors Need Medical Care

HRFT has declared that around 400 survivors have applied to the Foundation for the medical care/treatment of their injuries/disabilities as a result of hunger strikes and prison operations.
