In Amber: The Old Laundry, Harbour District. There is a stone arch, about 10 ft wide and 15 ft high,  in a row of houses along one of the narrow streets that runs between the hillside and the sea. Stone steps lead down through the arch, they are carved out of solid rock, and lead to a cave-like space. Part of this effect is due to the fact that the floor and two of the walls are solid rock, the rest is enclosed by buildings. There is a freshwater spring in the rock, and centuries ago the locals carved out a channel to lead the water into a series of troughs, also carved out of the stone floor. Here the local women gather to do their washing in the running water, and to gossip. The water runs off along the carved channel in the rock to a smaller archway, which opens out onto the cliffs that look down to the sea. This provides constant ventilation in this shady place, and makes it cool even at the height of summer
