Prologue
He shall appear from a far eastern land
across the sea.
A young man who has yet to know his potential.
This potential is a power that could either
destroy him or realize his will.
His courage shall determine his fate.
The path he must traverse, fraught with adversity.
I await whilst praying,
for this destiny predetermined since ancient times.
Awaiting in anticipation.
A dragon emerges from the earth
as ominous clouds fill the sky.
A phoenix descends from the heavens
trailing purple from its wings.
The pitch-black night unfolds
with the morning star as its only light.
And thus, the saga begins...
SHENMUE CHAPTER
I (as written in Shenmue Chapter 1: Yokosuka Dreamcast
manual)
The year is
1986, the place Yokosuka, Japan. The normally tranquil day-to-day
life of Ryo Hazuki is suddenly and irrecoverably shattered by
uninvited visitors. A man wearing dark green Chinese clothes appears
at the Hazuki family home with two black-suited thugs. This man
uses a powerful style of martial arts, the likes of which Ryo
has never before seen, to engage his father Iwao in a fierce battle.
Ryo attempts to intervene and help his father, but the obvious
disparity in power is too much. Ryo is beaten down and taken hostage
as the man questions Iwao, "Where is the mirror." Having
no other recourse, Iwao reluctantly tells him. Once this mysterious
object is in the man's possession, he again attacks Iwao. "Do
you remember Zhao Sun Ming..." From these words Ryo learns
of a shocking truth from the past. His father was responsible
for killing someone long ago. And then, Iwao is knocked down in
defeat. Ryo pulls his father close and feels him take his last
breath. "Lan Di" The man with the ominous embroidery
of a glittering dragon on his back, the man responsible. What
of the stolen mirror? Who is this Lan Di? Vowing to seek revenge,
Ryo embarks on a journey to unravel the mystery surrounding his
father's death and deliver justice to the man responsible.
SHENMUE II
As written in Shenmue II Dreamcast [EU] manual)
Vowing to seek revenge, Ryo embarks on a journey to find his father's
killer, but to no avail. Later, Ryo is given a letter addressed
to his late father. The letter was sent by a man called Yuanda Zhu
and warned of danger, but also told of a person that could be relied
on if something happened. This person was called Master Chen, and
Ryo was eager to find him. He explained to Ryo that Lan Di was one
of the leaders of the Chiyoumen, and based on the fact that he had
already obtained one sacred mirror, he was likely to find the other
as together they made a pair... Ryo eventually found the mirror,
also known as the Phoenix Mirror, but was still eager to seek Lan
Di and avenge his father's death. Master Chen told of the news that
Lan Di had left for Hong Kong, so Ryo decided to pursue, but an
unknown attacker decided to make his move and punish Ryo once and
for all. Strong willed and fighting off his attacker, Ryo also came
face to face with the Mad Angels closely connected with the Chiyoumen.
With the help of Gui Zhang, Master Chen's son, they put an end to
the wrath of the Mad Angels. Master Chen then gave Ryo a letter,
which introduced a man called Lishao Tao; he would help once Ryo
departed for Hong Kong.
Who is Yuanda Zhu, the sender of the letter?
What is the hidden mystery behind the Phoenix Mirror?
Where is Lan Di, the killer of Ryo's father?
Ryo arrives at Hong Kong with many questions unanswered, as he begins
his journey to seek the truth behind these mysteries
