Burton-on-Trent My grandmother was Rachel Mary Toomey from Burton-on-Trent, her parents I believe where from Ireland. She married my grandfather Dennis John O'Connor and lived in Birmingham until she died. Her sisters were Anne (Annie) and Claire. Anne married Arthur Woolley in Birmingham. Claire died a spinster. I'm trying to trace other relations. There may have been brothers, but I don't know

My husbands ancestors are John Alfred TOOMEY b.Waterloo London in Nov.1894 & Elsie BLAKEY. His parents, John Daniel TOOMEY and Caroline Mary TOWN. married St.Mary Newington,London 1894. John Daniels father was Daniel John TOOMEY of whom nothing is known. He is stated as deceased on the marriage certificate. I have not been able to find a birth for John Daniel who was 25 at time of marriage. There are several of that name but none with father Daniel, I have spent time and money on searches to no avail. John Daniel does not appear in the 1881 census except for one person who is the correctage at a Childrens Orphanage. They would have arrived in London from Ireland no doubt but I have no way of checking that!

County Cork
My grandfather has been deceased for many years. I believe he came from County Cork in Ireland. They moved to the United States and lived in Boston Massachusetts. His wife outlived Daniel and moved to New Jersey. She had four girls, one of whom was my mother, Mary Toomey. The other girls were Josephine Toomey, Elizabeth Toomey, Anna Toomey.
We want to learn more about Daniel's Irish lineage for we are going to Ireland soon. Thank you. Send replies to martyoflynn@msn.com
My paternal grandparents came from County Cork. My grandfather was John Patrick Toomey and he was married to Ellen McCarthy. I believe he was from Skibberean and my grandmother from Hare Island. They emigrated to the US sometime near the end of the 19th century, settling in Auburn, Maine. They had the following children, I believe all were born in the US: Michael no children Jerome no children (died in early childhood) Patrick no children John Peter (my father) (born 1898) - married Margaret Martin, four children: Leonora, John Martin, Margaret Mary and Ellen (me) William no children Vincent Benjamin - married Evangeline Bisson, lived in Waterville, Maine and had one daughter: Jacqueline Theresa - married Langdon Baker, lived in Boston and Harpswell, Maine. No children. They are all deceased, except my mother Margaret Martin Toomey, age 98. I believe my grandfather was a builder of houses in Auburn, Maine. My grandmother was an invalid after the birth of her last child. She had McCarthy relatives in Lewiston/Auburn area. toomey@pd.state.gov |

Descendants of William TOOMEY
1. William TOOMEY , son of Thomas TOOMEY and Catherine HERDEN, was born in Tipperary, Ireland and died on 3 Nov 1891 in York, Western Australia.
General Notes: William Toomey and his family arrived in Western Australia per "Hamilla Mitchel" on April 6 1859. The family had been sponsored by William's uncle, also a William Toomey, who was of Irish descent (Limmerick) but who had travelled to Australia on the 'Gilmore' arriving 15 December 1829, he shortly after the arrival of his nephew and family returned to London, England where he remained until his death.
William and family settled in York. York Census of 1859 shows the family as living on the farm "Yandigin" where William worked as a labourer. The farm at this time was owned/managed by Samuel and Joseph TAYLOR.
Land registered in the name of William Toomey 1865 SDUR/T2/ 213,215 a &b 1865 RM/Y 104 1866 SDUR/T2/ 224
William married Julia (Johanna) CAHILL, daughter of John CAHILL and Catherine HERNEY. Children from this marriage were: 2 M i. Michael TOOMEY was born in London, England and died on 1 Aug 1897 in MT Ida (Near Menzies ), Western Australia. General Notes: Michael Toomey has been linked with some of the earliest discoveries of gold in the area now known as the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia, and was the discoverer of Southern Cross. Following his death by his own hand the following obituary appeared in "THE MENZIES MINER" Saturday
August 14 1897 Mt Ida "SAD END OF AN OLD PIONEER"
A deep gloom of sorrow spread over the town and district when news arrived that Michael Toomey had met his death by his own act. Always lighthearted and of a most genial nature, he was one of the last men one would suppose to commit such a rash deed. It appears however, that he had been suffering keenly from mental worry, and, indulging more freely than wisely in wine, his mind became unhinged, and this terminated the career of one more unfortunate prospector. In the early history of the gold fields, he was attracted by an offer of 1,000 pounds for the discovery of payable gold in the eastern division, and he and a party proceeded to Golden Valley at the time Burnet, Colreavy and Annesty had gone to Perth to report their find. From that field he proceeded further and was the actual dicoverer of Southern Cross. Even before Bailey discovered Coolgarkie, Mr. Toomey had been in that district but was unfortunate enough to miss the Golden Elderado. Being one of our greatest bushmen and of a free and easy roving nature, he was well known all over the fields, where he had spent a rough life in searching for nature's wealth, but like many more of the good old pioneers, he simply opened the gates to let others enter and enjoy untold wealth. Latterly he had been resident in Mt Ida, and being a good sportsman, was the life and soul of meetings. As a mark of respect, the Progress Committee and other meetings were adjourned in order to attend his funeral, which left the Post Office at 5p.m. and was followed by over 50 of the residents. Mr A. Sherton, President of the Sick &Accident Society, read the burial service and some lovely wreaths of native flowers were placed over his lonely grave
