Seasons 6-9,11 – Syndicated (Stereo)

Why is there Mono AND Stereo versions of syndicated themes?

OK…seasons 4-11 WERE originally in stereo, but remember that stereo sound was still rarely used in the 80’s and early 90’s.  Every station that shows Cheers in syndication gets the show, first, usually, via satellite.  As it is ‘streamed’ to them, they pop a tape in and record it to their tapes, so they can keep it. (It’s just like you recording something off of TV.  Only instead of you, it’s the TV station, and instead of coming from cable, satellite dish, etc. to you, it’s the show coming from Paramount to the TV station.) Does that make sense?  If so, stay with me…

The show is being ‘given’/streamed to the TV station in stereo (seasons 4-11 anyway).  But when most TV stations got the show, it was when they were still using mono, so they recorded the show onto mono tapes.  When they play them back for you to get, they are coming in mono, since the tapes are in mono.  Some stations were more ‘modern’ however, and some DO show Cheers in stereo.

My local syndication has some episodes in mono, and some in stereo, so that’s why there’s two themes.
