a/s/l?

i was born and raised in pittsburgh, pennsylvania. i've also lived in boston, manhattan, and lancaster, pa. right now i live by the highland park bridge in pittsburgh. after years of living on my own, i recently moved in with my parents and grandmother because they need me. my dad had a stroke a couple years ago and his condition is quickly deteriorating into invalidity. my grandmother is 82 and she kicks ass. but my poor family can't fix up this new house and support themselves; they parents didn't plan for retirement. (don't ask me what they planned on.) i know the fact that i live with my parents is a huge turnoff, but i'm here because i have to be, okay? not because i can't support myself. if you can't understand that, fuck off.

i don't go out as much as i used to, for a variety of reasons i won't go into right now, but i used to hang out mostly on the south side, oakland, the east end, and the cultural district. see the music page for some of the joints i still frequent. on the weekends, i try to go on roadtrips, once a month or so.

i love to travel. i've been to yosemite, san francisco, vegas, los angeles, the cascade mountains, atlanta, the hoover dam, the grand canyon, vancouver, seattle, portland, "nawlin," walden, miami, and cancun, mexico. i'm sooo ready to travel again ...

for a while i was considering moving to seoul to teach english for a year, or joining the peace corps or a co-op, teaching in new england, or moving to the swiss alps, india, a mediterranean island ... i really do want to see new places, but i have other priorities right now. please don't send me email about how i should join the army, your church, your cult, or anything like that :P i have a few options.

friends

??? this section in limbo.

i just want to say thanks to lisa and jenna. and marisa i miss you.

and i still love everyone i've been close with in the past, but lost touch with. i constantly dream about yawl. honestly.

and all the people i see at shows and around the hood, i love you too. especially that cute girl laura who works at the store.

family

family's very important to me, but i'm not going to bother writing much in this section right now - mostly because i haven't yet decided if the flanders (as i call my parents) should read this. because you know, as a spy, i live a precariously balanced double life. in the meantime, here's a mediocre column i wrote about them.

religion, philosophy, and psychology

these are inextricable for me. they composed most of my studies in college. i have a complex outlook that makes total sense to me. i'm not going into it here, but i take it pretty seriously.

nature and science

my favorite sciences (next to psychology, of course) are astronomy and biology. lately i'm especially digging the wacked-out critters that live in the deep seas. of course, cheetahs and neurotoxins and nebulas are beautiful too.

- did you know that not all life on earth originates from the sun? there are entire ecosystems wayyy below the surface of the water that derive all their energy from the heat, light, and nutrients of constant streams of molten lava and minerals spewing from the core of the earth.

sports

i don't know why it surprises countercultural people, but i'm a total jock. i beat the pants off anyone in any sport. lately, my favs are gymnastics, martial arts, ballet, mountain biking, rock climbing, soccer, rockhopping, aggressive city skating, swimming, and tennis. i'm always looking for sports and dance partners.

incredibly - i'm single!

okay. will everyone stop telling me how perfect i am. for fuck's sake, someone go out with me. i just need someone to flirt with and think about.

i give bonus points to vegetarians, koreans, musicians, psychedelics, academics, political activists, dancers, and athletes.

i know i sound picky. i am, and that's part of why i'm single.

whatever ... i'm pretty desperate :P

random things i like

milkcrates. sharpies. zip hoodies. running into friends and being spontaneous. compilation cd's. clearance racks. wildflowers. potlucks. hosting dinner parties and house parties. rustoleum. afros. zines. cats. pinup girls. ancient egypt. palm trees. the french language. foreign accents. ballet. kimonos. boys in skirts. barrettes. alternative transportation. beaches - especially the ones in mexico. monkeys. frozen pizza. vampyres. cilantro. impromptu jams. dancing with eyes closed. trackspots. eaw sound. parks. vegetarian sushi. roadtrips. tofu. 24-hour diners. picking fruit and nuts. handmade stationery. climbing trees. all things scandinavian. tax returns. fruit - all koreans like all fruit. greeting strangers. pride. amateur porn. learning to play new musical instruments. indian and mediterranean food. walking over bridges and through tunnels. subways. convertibles. cappuccino. plantains. sunglasses. airports. music videos. sharing. water bottles. halloween. velvet the fabric. nasa. bossanova. children. animals. sky. rain. science. nature. martinis. dank. cello. bare feet. hair. the dolla sto.

turnoffs

smoking, eating meat, not wanting to try new things, not sharing, rejecting constructive criticism, too much makeup, blue eyeshadow, accepting media images as the norm or ideal, apathy, sloth, mediocrity, pittsburgh accents, homophobia, conformity, consumerism ...

i'll stop because probably everyone i know does one of the above and i don't want you to think i'm a hater. no bfd, yinz got your redeeming qualities :P

oh, and i hate waiting for busses. and plastic bags.
