the mendelssohn

i sing in the mendelssohn choir of pittsburgh (s), the choral affiliate of the pittsburgh symphony orchestra (s). my next show is april 26-28 at heinz hall (s). the program is mozart's requiem (s), with mariss jansons (s) and the pso. shortly afterwards, we'll be taking that on national tour and performing at carnegie hall in nyc (s) on april 30. following that, we're going on a european tour, with performances at festivals in leipzig, munich, vienna, and i think dresden.

contact me for more information or for $10 tickets to any heinz hall performance. the money is almost certainly better spent at the symphony than at most movies most shows. this particular show is one of a handful of true masterpieces of all music ever created, performed by some of the best musicians in the world. the classical musicianship in pittsburgh is absolutely ridiculous, and i'm always amazed at how many "music lovers" in pittsburgh are oblivious to this world-class talent.

rave on

i used to maintian www.scris.com/weeklies, a comprehensive listing and reviews of every weekly electronic music event in pittsburgh.

i also throw house parties and small raves in pittsburgh. most recently, i threw a free underground rave in a cave. i've been going to raves for about seven years, and it's an important part of my life. i do what i can to promote electronic music and preserve rave culture. rave culture, unlike relatively ancient and stagnant punk or jazz, is still being shaped, and i for one would like to see the ideology behind the events revived - and we can't even get the events themselves straight. i could go on about this forever, so i'll just say that electronic dance music rocks my world, and i luvvv to dance - eyes closed, my mind in my feet, for hours on end.

punk rawk

i recently traded in my washburn acoustic for a sexy black ibanez electric guitar. but i had to buy her back, cause cmon i grew up with her. i'm gonna be a kickass rock*star.

i go to see as much live music as i can afford to. around halloween and thanksgiving last year i kept a list of most of the shows i went to:

+the crystal method (dark breaks) at rosebud +the strokes (indierock) and stereo totale (french postpunk) at nick's fat city +guaracha (salsa and merengue) at rosebud +dj funk (booty house) at metropol +plastique (disco house) at union at the attic +ryan matthew and dj messy at metropol +alexei and the justins (rock) at gooski's +human brains (rocknroll) and soiler (utter crap) at the 31st street pub +dj preshure at a souf oaklin house party +girltalk (noise) at another souf oaklin house party +io (hardcore), mind boxing alliance (hiphop), pikadori (punk), and the microwaves (glitch) at pitt's gsph auditorium +ultraworld's radiate with paul van dyk (trance), scott henry (house), icey (floorida breaks), dj die (slow breaks), marky (breaks), fabio (dnb), andy c (techstep), ak1200 (techstep), dj food (eclectic acid jazz), and mr. scruff (triphop) at the armory in dc +slipmatt (hardcore), stakka & skynet (drumnbass), dj dan (funky breaks), scott henry (house), db (oldschool happy hardcore) and john tab (intelligent drumnbass) at buzz in dc +satoshi tomiee (japanese house), john creamer (house), hyper (uk garage), emma feline (uk garage), and draco (2step) at buzz in dc +shawn rudiman (live drum n bass pa) at fuze in the bloomfield bridge tavern +j-live (from de la soul), cannibal ox, el da sensei, and viruoso at cmu (lyrical hiphop) +beam (live dnb and hiphop) and eric justin (house) at flux +phat man dee (no such categorization) at the lava lounge +disco dan, kaleo, and kerem at zythos (electronica) +dj heim (goth/industrial) @ ceremony +zone, clevr, and smartie (jumpup) at union, at the attic +rasputina, ego likeness, and somnambulist at laga (goth/ethereal) +saliva (aggressive metal) and nickelback (boy band) at metropol +the roger humphries band (jazz) at the james street tavern.

i don't go out as much as i used to, but my fav venues these days are shadow lounge, quiet storm, club cafe, and zythos. mostly because cigarette smoke and sound systems are higher priorities now than they used to be.

i used to go to laga, the lava lounge, dee's, fuze at the bbt, happy hour at the warhol museum, zythos, pegasus, 80s night at the upstage, ceremony at the upstage, and union at the attic. so i guess that makes me something like a scenester. anyways, none of my friends are into jazz or classical, and there's no reggae or oldies scene in pittsburgh. that *sucks* cos i'd totally go to hear more music if it was there. kinda like i'd totally go to raves - if only there was anything worth going to! but that's okay cos my friends like to dance, or at least they pretend to when they're around me. not that i'm afraid to go out alone. but, you know, i'd totally get into swing and ballroom if i had a partner. and i used to dance ballet.

also, my favorite instruments to play are pianos and drum machines, altho i don't own any drum machines. and don't tell rave promoters and dj's, but i think the art of the dj is overrated. that is all.
